I have just beaten FFXIII-2. It's a great game with excellent gameplay and story. But I'm here to talk about the ending instead of giving a review. The review comes later when I am not lazy.

The following is not really a spoiler. I won't say specifically what happened in the ending. But it will indicate the quality of the ending and predictions on the future of the FFXIII series. So if you don't want to know the genre of the ending, avoid reading.

The ending is inconclusive. Something really tragic happened. The final screen writes 'to be continued' rather than the normal 'the end'. I have read the translations and understand what's happening. However, it's still an inconclusive story. I have to say it's definitely the worst ending in the FF series.

This only means 3 things. Either:
1.) FFXIII-3 is going to be real after all,
2.) There will be a huge DLC that gives a true ending that is conclusive OR
3.) The writers are really out of their minds and intentionally gave a stupid, inconclusive ending

and for sure, gamers all over the world is going to rage and bash the game. It's inevitable that some people will give a 1/10 just because of the ending, whereas their original score before watching the ending is probably 8/10 or 9/10.

While this is saddening, I think it's also SE team's own fault for deciding to include such an ending in the game.

I have to give credit to the first half of this ending though. It's beautiful and the ending song is fantastic. But the second half is what I am bothered with.

By the way, there is a secret ending when you do all sidequests. This ending makes things even more inconclusive.

The other multiple endings are actually more or less just 'what if' scenarios or joke endings. They are inconclusive too. I don't think they are meant to be taken seriously. There are 8 endings called paradox endings, and most of them can only be seen after beating the game. The requirements are usually beating a strong boss. There are also paradox endings which can be seen in the first playthrough and these are more like unique game overs since they are triggered by making obviously wrong choices.

I am not disappointed in the game. It's a great FF game IMO. I am merely very disappointed in the ending alone. And endings do not significantly determine the overall quality of a game. I am very looking forward to whatever plans SE have to deliver a true, conclusive ending to the XIII series.

I was going to panic and merge this with the spoiler discussion thread, but seeing as though we're not actually discussing what exactly happens in the ending itself... :lew:

Yeah, it's either going to lead to a FFXIII-3 or a storyline DLC that will come a little later, both of which manage to annoy the crap out of me even though I'm not playing the game.

As I and a few others have been ranting over at another messaging board, it's a blatant message to say that Square-Enix can't even conclude their own stories, and that people may need to fork out yet more money for it, on top of the 60 bucks they've probably spent on the game already, just for the ending.

At this point in time, storyline DLC sounds a lot more likely, considering this sequel itself hasn't exactly set Japan on fire, and it's unlikely to do do over here. Thereby, Square probably won't want to make a third game after all, so whatever they want to do next for the storyline may have to be DLC content.

If you're happy with this, then all power to you. I on the other hand, am worried for what they might do for future games such as Versus - cut out content that ought to have been there in the physical release/deliberately hold off on concluding a story, just so they can wrestle more money out of people's wallets.

Secret ending is just not worth the effort in my opinion. At all. And sometimes I like to joke about the normal ending itself being SE trying to wash their hands clean of the FFXIII sub-series. Ahh, if only. xD

If people would like to discuss the concrete spoilers of the ending(s), please do so over at the Spoiler Discussion Thread.

For all we know, the conclusion may turn out to be a movie like advent children. :ohshit:
Well seeing how the current ending is stupid, making a movie could be a great solution.

Nah. As I said, while I'm liking XIII-2 as a game by itself, I'm not happy with how the ending is handled. I also don't agree with how games are sold as incomplete. If that's going to be continued in future FFs, then it will be a great disappointment.

Wow, I've heard a lot of talk about this ending.
Already watched it on youtube (yay for spoilers and not knowing Japanese xD) and it seems really disappointing...

That's a shame really. No wonder why the game has more 1 star ratings on jap amazon than 5 star ratings. Square Enix made a bad choice by being so inconclusive :P.

@Kelvy

This is just my opinion, but it's completely unfair for those people in amazon jp to give the game 1 star just because of the ending alone. Well that kind of ending does deserve a star down, but not significantly. I was going to give the game a 9/10, but it's now a 8/10, due to the ending. But I won't give a 3/10 just because I hate the ending.

True. A lot of those 1 star ratings are probably FF XIII haters who just want to make the game look bad and discourage others from buying it.
