Bethesda Japan has gone live with first story details and a list of key features for Tango Gameworks’ newly revealed survival horror game The Evil Within (or Psychobreak as it’s called in Japan) ahead of Monday’s IGN details story.
The game, which uses the latest version of the id Tech 5 engine, is detailed below.

Story

When Detective Sebastian and his partner rush to the scene of a gruesome mass murder, a mysterious, powerful force is lying in wait for them. Witnessing the killing of fellow police officers one after another, Sebastian is then attacked and loses consciousness. Waking up in a land where monsters are wandering about, Sebastian has to fight his way through a world of death and its close friend madness in order to understand what’s going on. Sebastian has to face his fears in order to survive on a journey to discover what lies in the shadows of that mysterious force.

Key Features

  • A Return to Pure Survival Horror: From the father of the survival horror genre, Shinji Mikami. He appears once again as the director of this game, one which makes your blood run cold, but heats you right back up. Players must survive on limited resources, experiencing that supreme match of action and horror, that indescribable terror. To survive in an afflicted world, your anxiety and nerves will be pushed to the edge.

  • Brutal Traps and Enemies with Puzzles: While struggling to survive, you’ll have to face indescribable terror, cruel traps, and sly mechanisms. Players can die in a trap all too easily, however, at times they can turn them against enemies

  • In an Unstable World, Not All Horrors are in Plain Sight: The player is driven into a corner as the world distorts and warps according to mysterious and evil horrors. The scenery: hallways, walls, doors, rooms, buildings, and even nature, all transforming in real time based on the player’s actions. And the threats keep coming from all directions.

  • A Supernova of Horror: By setting one foot in this world weaved from lush backdrops, characters with personality, and a polished story, players will be sucked in, willing or unwilling, tension and anxiety rapidly mounting. When that fear is smashed and conquered, you can experience the bliss that can only be found in The Evil Within.

So what do you guys think? Do you like the break from Resident Evil and finally a new IP is in the works? Honestly, it looks really scary and I think that is what Resident Evil is lacking lately. Look at the descriptions. This game is going to scare you to death but at the same time it looks amazing. I am not scared to play it. I should note that Resident Evil 6 was said to be the scariest RE yet and that never ever truly came true. RE6 did not scare me one bit.

I like this partnership and I think it will turn out to be an amazing survival horror game. It will certainly redeem the Resident Evil series. I will be buying this for next generation consoles most likely.

RE may as well be dead after this. I can see this thriving as a new franchise.

Resident Evil 6 can't even be classified as a survival horror game seriously, it felt more on the action side than anything else. Anyway thats another topic for another time and so back to evil within. First after I watched the trailerI was allready thinking this game is pretty scary just from that. Hopefully I don't go insane and kill myself or something after playing it xD Me and horror don't get along too well, and I only like it when Im playing with someone or watching a horror with someone, so I hope the game has co-op.

It seems interesting that where gonna have to be smart with our resources and items if where gonna be limited as they say. Aside from all the horror (I dont even wanna know what those creatures where x_x) I do like the traps they talk about, it reminds me of a game I played "Trapt" so hopefully thy do a good job on the tap system and have some grueling ones in their cause I want things to get bloody. Puzzles Im not to worried about it since I dont find the hardbut well see if they give us any ones thats a challenge. Well see what happens when they release more gameplay but having the game come out for both current gen and next gen at least lets me know well be able to play it if we dont have the next gen consoles :)

The launch trailer was really really creepy, and with Bethesda throwing their weight behind this, alongside Shinji Mikami's track record, I am definitely curious. If the game can capture the same feel and atmosphere of the trailer, I could see this rival Silent Hill 2 as my favourite video game scare, so I can't wait to see some actual in game footage.

Looks absolutely amazing. Is it just me or does the 1st image look like resi 4 in the village? And the bodies dangling from the ceiling in another image is like Silent Hill :lew:

Anyways, this will definitely be a purchase for me. The human centipede-style enemies will creep me out to no end :s

cannot wait! :ohoho:

I already love horror-type games like this but this actually looks amazing. my brother told me the day the trailer came out but i never saw the gameplay before, i am stoked for it. :ohoho:

This will be interesting to see. Mikami has finally remembered that what makes a game scary isn't just monsters jumping out of cupboards, it's having to scrounge and scrimp for supplies. Look at Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space for example, both start off relatively scary. Soon enough though you can mow down waves of enemies and take damage like an armoured fridge with legs. This quickly dispels any sense of fear or danger. Hopefully this game will be more Silent Hill 2-esque in how unforgiving it is with weaponry and resources.

This new horror game is Mikami's time to shine and bring back survival horror. He calls this generation of horror games "weak"

Who would blame him? Resident evil lost the survival horror genre in a way.

The Evil within makes you take control of detective Sebastian Castellanos. He awakens in a terrible world shortly after that.

The preview makes for a very good read.

It looks like it will be strictly single player though, and I am not okay with that.

I was expecting a cool co-op experience.
