Yes on both of those. I recommend it if you like movies with a lot of emphasis on atmosphere or mood, or post-apocalyptic movies. I would answer "Yes" to both of those personally.

it was absolutely excellent. viggo mortensen gave a really powerful performance as the father, and i was quite surprised by kodi smit-mcphee too.
i liked that the film didn't get too hung up on the reason for the apocalypse but rather stuck to the story at hand. it can be a bit of a struggle to watch at times, but the emotional pay off at the end is worth it.

Just a little tip: I personally thought it was "just OK" when I walked out of the theater but it grew on me the more I thought about it.
