The whole breathing underwater ...

At first I wondered the same thing, but then I thought it's just a game convention that these people can hold their breath underwater for extended periods of time. It could be a spell, but I believe it's just sheer ability. This is a fantasy world after all, and the only rule of a fantasy world is that it is coherent within itself.

It's all about holding your breath. In the epilogue in FFX: International (Another Side, Another Story or whatever it was called) it begins with Yuna practicing holding her breath underwater, and she gets to the longest she had yet (3 minutes, I think, it's been awhile since I watched it).

2 minutes 41 seconds actually ^_^ I just looked it up on youtube. It is holding your breath, but Yuna said there was a technique to it and things you had to know...wish she'd elaborated on them. Here are the links to it:

Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EO5eRRevt4
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKKEsb4F-jU

Wakka's stomach has gotten so flabby it makes squeaky sounds when it's poked xD And now we know why Yuna's dressed like a skank in X-2! Rikku dressed her! Said she had to go "undercover"...ha, undercover is right. I still dunno why they actually changed the shape of Yuna's face though...

True, though, that there isn't much of anything to explain it in the main story, however.

Yeah, that's right, now I remember. Still 10 mins underwater? I mean if he stood still It'd be ok, but he's moving, getting hit and stuff. Can't be IMO

I really wish Yuna had explained the technique...maybe it tells how to keep from accidentally breathing if you're hit and open your mouth.

So true. That's exactly why Lulu has fifty functionless belts in her skirt.

or why Squall has 3 belts holding his pants up, and 3 smaller ones strapped around his leg?

lol I've been wondering about the breathing underwater thing myself... I just figured they could hold their breath for a really long time lol

Yeah I know it has Fantasy in the title, so basically anythings possible. But did anyone else find breathing underwater unrealistic?

I mean, how was it possible? Tidus couldnt have learnt to hold his breath for that long in order to play Blitzball. And the kissing Tiuds/Yuna scene, they end up underwater and are both breathing fine.

I just dont understand this lol.

I can understand Tidus (you guys pretty much explained it already), but yeah, as far as Yuna goes...how she was able to hold her breath for such a long period of time is beyond me.

But I honestly didn't give it any much further thoughts or pondered about it since it IS afterall, fantasy. xD I assumed that the creators just wanted a beautiful CG done, one that finalizes Tidus and Yuna's relationship - that they are indeed in love. So if they have to breath underwater in order for that to happen, then why not, eh? :) I really can't think of any other explanation for Yuna's partake in the "underwater kissing" situation.

Yeah, it's been awhile since I've seen it. In response to SapphireStar, that little "episode" was actually released in the US, with full English voice work. I thought it was strange that it didn't show up as an extra on X-2, but I got it on one of the bonus discs that came with Official Playstation Magazine (back when Sony was still publishing it).

And as for the whole Tidus/Yuna lagoon deal with "Suteki da Ne" playing and so on, I'd almost say from the point of them kissing onward, what happens visually afterward is more like a metaphor for how the two feel spiritually, rather than the two actually floating and dancing about underwater for however long it was. To me, it was just Square being tactful--better to present it as an artistic thing and keep your "T" rating. Besides, that lovely song might not have worked as well with nothing but asses and elbows onscreen.

I'm not sure it was all to do with her being in love with him, I think she just wanted to learn how to do it. We can gather from Another Side, Another Story that Wakka's been training her how to do it, so she might just be doing it to get to know Wakka better or maybe she wants to learn Blitzball. Who knows *shrugs*

That's what I always thought too. I don't think the water is actually deep enough for them to be completely submerged.

Well, I guess another thing to consider is the fact that Spiran culture revolves around water to a great extent, so that would explain it being so common for people to train themselves to be able to hold their breaths for extended amounts of time.

Yeah I heard it was released in the US. But for some reason Europe didnt get a look in. But thanks for those links VR. Pity my pc's speakers arent working :(

I don't think it IS holding breath underwater, remember when Yuna gets kidnapped by the Al Bhed / Rikku, and they have to fight her macina underwater? wakka is able to go "Yuna we'll save you!" while underwater...how could he open his mouth to speak/Gargle-speak and still breathe? Unless its just a gaping mistake they never noticed...

Then you'd accept it if people were able to fly in FFX? Or if all Blitzball players had webbed feet? Or if the main party all decided to have a big orgy in Macalania Woods?

FFX is fantasy, but even a fantasy world has rules. Fantasy world doesn't mean anything can happen - it means different things happen because their world follows a different set of world properties. But on a very basic level, it must be relative to our own world or people wouldn't be able to give a damn beyond a few speculative minutes.

hell yeah i would espicall this part Or if the main party all decided to have a big orgy in Macalania Woods? nice neway im just sayin this is nothing to be surprised about cause its FANATASY NOT REAL LIFE

And as we stated in the first post, we are aware its not real and fantasy. But it still seems unrealstic. If you have nothing worth while to post only ranting about how its fantasy and giving nothing else, dont bother.

Good point, maybe their have devices that help them to breath underwater like in Star Wars.

they hold their breath, if you first do the blitzball sidequest in FFX-2 you'll hear Yuna say
"i've managed to hold my breath for a long while now" or something along those lines

it could be because Spira is a very water involving world(spheres are made from water and crystal if i'm not mistaken, Sin lives in water, Blitzball is played in water) the people simply can hold their breath longer then the people in the real world

and i've seen a guy hold his breath for about 10 minutes(i'm not quite sure about the number, but it was quite insane)... ofc he wasn't moving(like blitzers do, but they only play for 5 minutes each half, moving also causes you to need to breath more often then when you're not moving at all)

so it's not impossible, though very hard

the guy who did that "stunt" trained really hard to do it

Nomura doesn't seem to put a whole lot of thought into his designs beyond 'what looks cool'. He probably decided that logic wasn't a good enough reason to scrap the whole Blitzball idea but at the same time couldn't think of a decent explanation for why these guys can spend over 10 mins underwater, so he just left it ambiguous.
I couldn’t agree more, very true...

Sure, I found it unrealistic... Actually, until now, I’ve always dismissed it as one of those unexplained issues given its Final Fantasy (later explain in X-2, kinda). I just figured they could breathe water or they could hold their breath for super long amounts of time.

Yeah, its true...i heard they can hold their breathe for really long periods of time. I also think that mabey the water is oxygenated

It makes sense to me!

Maybe it's the world of Spira. =O!!! haha.

It's the Faith and their abilities with to weild magic that helps them breath underwater. >_>;;

:huh::huh::huh::dry::dry::dry: Hehe could be :D

I still say, though, that it's not regular water...

It could be that too. The water is special made. haha.

If you notice, in Besaid when Wakka and Tidus went swimming, when Wakka pushed Tidus underwater, he came back up breathing heavily. So, it probably is the water in the Blitz Sphere.
