Well, you basically just thwack them really hard. The Tonberries in this game are never THAT bad...Karma has never been able to kill any of my party members outright, and that's really the only thing you have to worry about.
If Karma is killing one of your characters in a single hit, simply switch out for another, less-used party member. He doesn't have any weaknesses or anything, so there's no advice I can give you beyond that.
They can only kill one person at a time. As long as you keep reviving, you won't lose. This is a very commonly overlooked weakness many enemies have in FFX.
You're playing X right? Anyways, what I do is have Yuna learn Holy (or Flare or Ultima etc.) and just use her to spell Tonberry's ass. Tonberry will use Karma everytime, and do damage in the tens or hundreds (assuming you didn't use Yuna as a killing machine during the rest of the game). Other than that, I'd just hit, heal/revive, hit, heal/revive etc.
Auto-Phoenix is godly, as long as you aren't fighting anything that can hit everyone at once (or at the very least, you can tell when they're going to hit everyone at once). For example, it's a lifesaver against Earth Eater (who never hits all 3 people in one turn, occasionally he'll hit two but that's the worst), but it's not that useful against Ultima Buster (who almost every turn attacks everyone).
Tonberries deals damage according to the number of its target's defeated enemy. In this case, the characters that usually kills a fiend are Wakka and Auron. So, they take a lot of damage when hit by karma. The formula of the damage:
(character's defeated enemies x 10)
Example:
If Wakka defeated 367 enemies, Karma deals 3,670 damage on him.
If your talking about X-2 and the master tonberry creatures then your best bet is to fight one while it is in oversoul. In final fantasy X though I never really thought they were that powerful.
Do you have Aurons Celestial Weapon at full power? I kill him off then use Life on him. Since he's my hard hitter, he kills it in one or 2 hits. If you don't, then Auto Life helps alot. Yuna takes the least amount of damage seeing as she's a healer/summoner i suggest getting Yuna's Celestial weapon at full power before you fight another one. Her Celestial is the easiest to obtain, and the wweapon bonuses are a godsend. you'll know what i mean when you get it full power.
It depends what level you are at really I guess, seeing as you are referring to them as Tonberry I'm assuming you mean the ones in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. If you are beating other enemies in the cavern comfortably you'll still probably lose to a Tonberry, don't worry come back later when you have much better weapons(Break Damage etc.). Karma is pretty rough but it's negated by Auto-Phoenix which you can get later, also you must of noticed the Tonberry slowly walks forward every few moves, flee before he reaches you or you will lose automatically.
Yeah like previous posters mentioned Karma =how many fiends you defeated per individual....
Also Tonberry doesnt use Karma when he is in front of you(close by) first press guard/guard till the Tonberry is close..then use Haste on all partymembers and keep bashing and hitting him till its toast.
