I just got done playing FFXIII and I actually enjoyed it. It kind of reminded me of FFX so I liked it but I do have one complaint. From the very beginning until the end nothing but mad drama is going on. From the first moment someone is crying, dieing, trying to get revenge, trying too fight fools, crying with Hope's dad. It never takes a break. I liked FFX because it started out you were just trying to get to Luca and play blitzball. Then you think about becoming a guardian. Then the drama and stuff picks up as you go. So what do you guys think?

Drama is the strong point of all RPGS buddy. And until you can learn to put up with the constant hair pulling, facepalming drama they throw at you, then you won't really learn about the characters themselves, nor even like the game much because you're too busy trying to suppress or cancel out that drama by wanting to get on with the game.

//What a big run-on sentence...

If that made sense at all :wacky:

This is true, but it does it to such an extent that it just hurts. There are no breaks from the drama either, no comedic interludes like there have been in all the Final Fantasies previous. The brief moments of levity in the game mostly feature Vanille, with her horrible Australian/American/Alien hybrid accent.

OzDok kinda had a point, not one character in FFXIII had any Comic Relief in them at all, i cant even remember any one line funnies in it, XII had Balthier, to me he was kinda the comic relief character "playing the leading role". X had everyone making a one liner here and there. IX had Zidane, VIII had Zell, VII had Barret, Yuffie...Cid even, VI had Gau, V had Bartz, IV and the twins, III...well i guess you can name the funny one here?, II and I...too simple to have any funny relief i guess that I can remember?

But yeah I guess you need a little comic relief to take the ease away from the game every now and then, and I think XIII kinda dropped it there.

Great point I was worried by the first guy that you guys wouldn't get what I was talking about. I like drama but if it happens over and over it loses its edge. You make a great point how it simply wasn't close to having the amount of funny parts the other game. Like in FFX when Auron says "When lady Yuna fixes her hair WE LEAVE" was funny. And I know someone mentioned Zidane in FFIX which he is funny but I thought Steiner was WAY funnier. Then FF7 was funnier then some give it credit. Half of the weirdo's you meet in that game have me cracking up. I think a game needs enough of light hearted moments to make the drama have more impact. However I enjoyed FFXIII I just wanted more easy going moments.

Alright i admit there is a lot of drama in this game but like everyone said that's what makes an rpg expecially final fantasy's eight all that was was a huge love story i mean yes there other sub plots but it's a love story i mean even 7 had a lot of drama in it with aeris and cloud and everything but u just have to embrace it and roll with the punches if you can learn to do that instead of griping and complaining about it just enjoy the game.

Although I do agree that there was no REAL comic relief in XIII like in previous games, it was still a pretty solid game as far as story goes. Sazh and Vanille provided the most comic relief within the game and that does not say TOO much.

Every FF will be different (obviously). I mean would you like every FF to start off the same and end the same? Every opening to begin happy and go lucky and then get dramatic and then end happy or with questions? Nah, I liked that they changed it up and started with drama and action from opening scene. It made things fresh and more real, IMO. Kept you wanting more and wanting to continue to see what happend next.

You are being too harsh on me I don't want them all the same I just would like some light hearted moments its what truly makes the drama. However I never said I didn't like the game I just was saying the thing I would critque. A lot of people are mad about not having towns. Then I heard a different argument where the guy said " When you play a Final Fantasy do you ever get excited about the towns, I don't so why does everyone complain." However if you really think about it all the light hearted stuff happend in towns. Since FXIII didn't have many light hearted parts it made not having towns more noticeable IMO.

Okay, I agree. There were no "real" light hearted moments in the game. But, that's what makes it so different and stands out from the other FF titles. The town thing I do agree on though. Although no one gets excited over seeing towns it still makes it apart of the FF games. With that taken out you kinda lose some of the bonding, IMO.

It's just the way XIII is, it's very full on emotional from the beginning. I definitely don't think it was melodramatic, the character had every reason to be sobbing their eyes out, so its just a side effect from a very intense story.

There really was WAAAAY too much drama.

It's like SE sat down and decided they were going to make a game about Responsibility with a capital 'R'. They were going to teach us the moral lessons of doing the right thing even though you were upset and sad and wanted to lash you, you should always remember that vengeance is bad and you should always do what feels right despite those negative emotions. Honor! Justice! Forgiveness! Teamwork! Togetherness!

The end result is that playing this game is like chugging undiluted unicorn giggles. Intensely over-sugary. The only real comic relief comes in the last 2 chapters when Lightning makes unmerciful snarky comments about Snow (much to my delight). Even Sazh and Snow -- clearly the comic relief characters -- did not live up to their role. They were certainly intended to lighten the mood but they often fall into the trap of repetitive hopelessness.

Now don't get me wrong -- with the shit getting piled on their situation, it isn't all that surprising they'd constantly feel down. And the game even says that to
become Ragnorok
one must lose all hope and fall into utter despair. The plot is actually trying to make them depressed. But even so, didn't they lay it on a bit frickin' thick!? Almost every single cutsene is a study in sad backstories and speeches in giving up hope. FUCKING A, GET ON WITH IT ALREADY.

This is why I largely like Lightning. She has only 2 sad speeches throughout the entire game, each incredibly short and to the point. Other than that, her time is spent punching stupid people in the face and kicking ass. YAY FOR LIGHTNING! :yay:

Maybe the big reason you complained about this is because the game was so linear and there were no distractions from it. In almost every other title, there are mini-games, traditional towns, limitless exploration but you're pretty much forced to battle and watch cutscenes until Gran Pulse. So the focus was forced upon the story and its faults were more evident; although I really enjoyed this game!
