Not a terribly complex subject as it says it all in the title, what RPG's have a Battle System that you consider to stand out from among the crowd?

The Shadow Hearts, Legend of Legaia ones and Final Fantasy X2.

In Shadow Hearts we have the Judgement Ring, which was coolio and made you focus more on the battle instead of giving an order.

Legend of Legaia was good because of the random attacks you could throw out, like left arm, high kick, etc. Very fun to see what moves you could create.

And X2 for the dresspheres. I just adored them and never used the option to switch off the animantions you can witness.

FFVII and XII.

VII because of the Revoloutinary materia system and XII because it brought Freshness to the market.

FFVII's Battle System was pretty basic imo.

Grandia II probably has my fave system, one of the few that you actually had to think over what and when you were going to launch attacks, only negative thing about them was that the Boss Battles were so unbalanced by making it difficult by having to fight 9 individual sections at a time.

Pokemon and Fable. Ooooooooh yeahhhhhhhhh. ;D

I haven't played a whole lot of RPG's in my day, but those two have my favorite battle system.

I love the battle system in Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss. Keeps me entertained.

Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 have the best battle system ever. In a close second would be Tales of Symphonia and 3rd would go to Legend of Dragoon.

I kinda liked the X battle system, they allowed you, , to be more flexible and not just sticking with one set party, instead it allowed you to switch party members back and forth, making getting levels easier.

Well, I loved just about every aspect of Golden Sun, and although the Djinn system is not something that could really be easily applied to other games, that whole idea was fun.
Here's what the system was:
Basically, you could equip creatures called Djinn (strangely enough, Djinni is the singular) to your characters, and there were four different types: Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind. Setting (essentially equipping) different Djinn to different characters would change their class, and in battle, set Djinn could be unleashed, releasing a specific power... however, after using that, then the Djinn would be on "standby," and would no longer be equipped to that character (however, the Djinn would still be "connected" to that character, preventing characters from swapping Djinn in battle). Once in standby, a Djinn could then be "set" again, or it could be used to summon a God, and more powerful gods required more Djinn. After being used to summon, Djinn would then go into "recovery" (during which the Djinn was unusable), and then one Djinn per turn per character would go from "recovery" into being "set."
Wow, so that was probably too long and confusing, sorry guys. I thought that the system was original though, and made the two games really unique (along with a great story). It took a while to get used to, but eventually become second nature. Hmm... I am getting nostalgic for GS now...

The only other battle system that really stood out for me was Dragon Quest:Rocket Slime. Although it is hardly an RPG, and as deep as a puddle, the battle system was very different (though far from great). The battles consisted of throwing collected items through cannons in a "tank" at the opponent's tank. You could get "monsters" to be your workers in the tank as well, adding a bit of strategy. I wouldn't recommend a purchase, but if a friend has it, you should see the battle system just to see how untraditional things can get.

Tales Of Symphonia - Real time battles with jumping, blocking, combos and team attacks. It was a good system.

Xenogears - Beat 'em up style combos win!

Vagrant Story - Different effects depending on which body area you attack and the Risk system which basically forced you to rest after pulling off techniques were definitely a break from the norm.

SMT: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoa Vs The Soulless Army - Plays like Dynasty Warriors crossed with Pokemon, frikkin' ace!

I also second the statements for Golden Sun and Shadow Hearts.

I love FFVII's battle system, as well as Tales of Symphonia, Grandia I and II, and a few others. They're all unique. But VII really stands out the most for me since I love looking for materias and making different combos of your own choosing. Extremely fabulous.

Ah well, the ATB battle system is simply incredible. It's not exactly turn-based, but it's also quite easy to learn, so yeah, the ATB system takes the cake for me. ;)

I don't really like RTB because it's like playing Diablo or something, but then again, who knows, I might like XII's system when I actually play it.

ATB is a decent battle system. I like the actually western (American games) battle system more than the eastern rpgs use (ATB). You know what i'm talking about... ;p games like Elder scrolls, Fable and Fallout. Games where you run around, choose if you want to kill the weapon shop guy, choose your own path/class, run around and blast AOE spells. (area of effect)

Diablo isn't RTS....Real time strategy games are Ages of Empires, Command and Conquer, Starcraft and Warcraft. Diablo is consindered a action RPG or 'hack n slash'.
