Do you use walkthroughs, specifically, on your first play through? Why or why not? Do you like experimenting and finding out things on your own the first play through or do you like having a path already laid out for you to follow in order to experience everything the game has to offer?

In my situation Im 50/50. I like following a walkthrough so I can experience the game fully because honestly no matter how good the game was Im probably never going to play it again anytime soon. There are those times that I would come back within the next few months and play a game again but its rare so I like to get all the content from a game the first time.
On the other hand when I do this it feels alot like work having to look at a guide every few minutes to see what I suppose to do so a times I like to just experience the game and not worry about if I have done this at the right time or if I have the strogest possible party and Im mainly talking about RPGs in my case. If I had to pick an example of a game it would be the persona series, namely persona 3. This game is so complex its kinda overwhelming me atm because I want to experience all the social links on my first play through but in order to do that you need to follow a very strict way of doing things.

I don't use walkthroughs until after I've beaten the game, so I can go through it 100%. I see absolutely no point in playing a game if you're going to use a walkthrough to hold your hand all throughout. Video games aren't for you if you think that's necessary, if you ask me

I refer to walkthroughs quite a bit, but I don't use them as in terms of following the instructions in them; I think the only time I actually use a walkthrough in that fashion is if I get stuck on some bloody stupid puzzle or something. For me, they're more of a checklist to make sure that I get the most out of the game: I don't like missing out on sidequests, and I like to fully complete games the first time around if it's possible: after I've played a game through once, it's usually at least a year before I play through it a second time, if I even do (I have lots of games I've been meaning to replay but just haven't gotten around to) so I like to have some data on sidequests in front of me when they're not glaringly obvious.

The statistics and information on optional content is nice, but the text itself isn't something I'd follow, unless there was a particularly annoying dungeon (like the Arcadia Garden in Tales of Graces f; whoever made THAT needs to go and die in a fire) or puzzle I'd spend about half an hour doing and getting absolutely nowhere with it.

First playthrough I never use a walkthrough. Second time I'm more likely to, normally do, so that I can get what I missed the first time and fully explore the game. First time is for story and just enjoying the game for what it is.

I never used a walkthrough my first play through on ANY game that I play. I don't play the game for it to be handed it down for me. I like challenges and figuring out what to do. If I absoutely have no idea, then I might look something up for refrence, but that's about it. I don't feel like it gives away spoilers, but sometimes they give away too much details. ehh. I don't like walkthroughs. I feel like the objective of the game is for you to play, yourself. I don't need my game to be 100%, I just wanna play and enjoy the game itself. It's how it should be anyways.

Actually, if the game is bogus, I'll probably look up a small cheat. Sometimes in games, there will be parts that make you wonder how in the fuck you would go about it without the internet.

I'm a "completionist in-training," so I'm personally a fan of using walkthroughs (I say "in-training" 'cause I don't always succeed).
Got a problem? :myberry:

There's no need for me to use a strategy guide within the first 5 minutes of a game of course, but I do like to skim over the sidequests section to make sure that I'm not missing out on anything before it's too late, which has happened to me in the past, so I like to avoid that...

I especially used the heck out of my strategy guide when playing Persona 4 for those darn social links! xD
Oo, I also love using strategy guides to find items on the maps, like with .hack I believe...

I personally try to avoid the Walkthroughs as much as possible, I might use one if I am really stuck on one part or something, but other than that, I just see them as major spoilers.

Yeah, they can spoil boss fights and major plot lines sometimes. It's a good thing I have horrible short-term memory then. xD

On the first playthrough, I do not use walkthroughs or strategy guides. While I consider myself to be a completionist when it comes to gaming, I also feel like, for a first run, I want to try to explore the game myself and see if I can find all the little secrets to it. Then, after I've completed the game, I will likely go back and see if I found everything or not. See how well I did on my own. ;)

I try to never use walkthroughs unless I know there is a substantial amount of gameplay I'm missing because I'm just not seeing it. Usually though I'll only start a side quest or something with a walkthrough and try to get through the rest of it on my own. Cheats are a no-no unless I wanna do a quick replay to appreciate the story once again. But even then once I've played a game it's pretty easy for me to recall what exactly to do to speed things up.

So yes and no I guess.

Yes, I use walkthroughs during my first playthroughs. Why? Because I'm hopeless when it comes to finding weapons and stuff like that on my own. If I get stuck somewhere for more than a day, I'll get bored and want to turn it off. But instead of that, I'll use a walkthrough. It makes my life much easier. It's the reason I have all this hair now. I'm not pulling it out anymore. XD

I try not to use a walkthrough on my first play through but if I get really stuck, I am gonna end up using one because I don't have the patience to do it over and over. Also I will use one if I know there's a secret option item (or summon in FF's case) that I can get.

I agree with this, theirs no point to even playing the game if your just gonna cheat with the walkthrough but thats just me. I also dont want things spoiled and a walkthrough totally does that. I alway play my games more than once sometimes even 4 times, and even then I dont use walkthroughs. I usually use them to help me with a quest or 2 after ive allready beaten a game if its annoying to do on my own and thats it.
