Is it just me? I like FF12, don't get me wrong.....but.....how come Vaan (common thief) helps save the world? He isn't really the strongest role in the game. How can a thief take on Vayne, the airship destroying thing at the end? HES A THIEF!!! Where does he get abilities like quickenings from? Are people born with Liscence boards built in, in Ivalice? I know its fantasy but it didn't seem to fit. Was it just a conveniant system to use at the time when they made the game?

Locke, Zidane, Rikku, Yuffie... Similar, eh?

It's all in the second word of the title: "Final Fantasy"

You need a bit of abnormal sometimes. Having a huge bulked up hero gets repetitive and Squenix doesn't need to give us that. I'll take the Tidus', Zidane's and Vaan's anyday. The bulk is meant for support characters like Barret and Auron.

Zidane came from another planet, he was engineered to end life!

Yuffie was a female warrior from a far on country who used materia (crystalised power of the ancients!)

Rikku used her skills to create gadgets like bombs, she could fix machines.

VAAN STEALS POUCHES FROM SOLDIERS AND RUNS ERRANDS FOR THE LOCAL SUNDRIES SHOP!!!

Thats what the levels are supposed to represent in a game, if you look at the way a lot of people who roleplay D&D based games today quite a few of them like to say their character ages something like 4 months per level or something like that and the only reason they level faster is because it would be a really boring game if it took that long.

The idea is the same in any RPG, at the start Vaan is a level 1...guess what? HE SUCKS! He can barely kill a rat, but then after a while of fighting and learning he gets better and eventually is strong enough to beat up bigger monsters. That's what you gotta understand when you see him level up, he doesnt just stay the same wimpy little kid who knows nothing about fighting, with each level he's learning more dodges and attacks and how to do it better, never mind the fact that the levels also represent his physical/mental strength increasing as he commits more and more time to the training he undergoes.

So, is Vaan a likely hero for Ivalice? Well about as likely as the next guy, but its not like its impossible for everything to happen the way it did.

Like its been said, its a game and the title has the word fantasy in it. Anythings possible. So what if Vaans a theif, he does the right thing in the end and watches out for those he cares about. Theif or not, the guy has a heart of gold.

I reckon by the looks of this pattern (Sports Star, common Street Rat) they'll have a sheep farmer as the main character in the next game

I think I understand what you're talking about, because I made a similar point a little earlier elsewhere. I tried to say that, basically, I didn't see why Vaan, and Penelo for that matter, were main characters in Final Fantasy XII. I'm sure there were countless of other families ruined by the Empire, so why was Vaan in particular the one you controlled? There was nothing particularly special about him, in my view. Penelo is a little more tolerable, however.

Thats completely right... the levels dont mean just nothing.

Well, the lil special thing in Vaan, is bout his brothers Reks, a young guy (only 17) sent to war, maybe the youngest soldier, but... he wasnt the only one affected by the war... however, as its been stated, fantasy is fantasy
