Vanille and Fang

Ever since I beat the game, I've been reading up on other people's opinions and insight on the Final Fantasy 13 and the characters etc., and I came across a very interesting "fact":



"Fang was originally a male character throughout the beginning when the game was first in production. For some reason they made "pj FANG" a female. They just forgot to change the scenes with the original male Fang with Vanille.
For that reason, they ARE in love, no matter what sex they are."


I'm just wondering if this is true. What have you guys heard about this? I'm a little excited, but at the same time I feel like it's sort of lazy and I can't feel like it's beautifully real because it wasn't actually intended to be that way.

But I'm thinking it's fake. Look at how tihs person worded it.

Fang was going to be a Male(and quite frankly should have been, she's ace either way IMO)
and Lightning was going to be a bit more of a girly girl, but early on they changed Fang to a female and made her more boisterous and aggressive and all so made Light more stoic and disciplined.

Such is the way of R&D in the early going.

Hold on. It would seem you've just complained over a seemingly chauvinistic response over Fang, but then you call Hope a bitch? Doesn't work both ways then does it?

As for Fang possibly being male, if your only source is some comment from youtube; I'd advise against reading too far into it.

According to Nomura, she was originally scheduled to be a male character. When they switched her to female, they decided to give her a sexy quality, which they removed from Lightning in order to differentiate the two. So remember -- Lightning originally had sex appeal, Fang was originally a guy.

I haven't played the game so I can't really say if I'd prefer her as a male or not, but from what I've seen (and I've watched nearly the whole game on youtube/streams/etc) I like her juuuuust fine as a girl. She's rather awesome. It'd change some things up if she had stayed a male... but eh.

Thinking back, there were a couple scenes where there was Fang and Snow seeming close, like they had somewhat of a chemistry.

Thinking of Fang being a male, that would seem awkward.

I heard about the "Fang origionally being male" thing aaages ago, and if that's the truth then i'm SO glad they decided to make her Female!
In previous FF games, most of the Females were kinda "girly" and physically weak in battles. FF13 however made a long awaited change by introducing strong minded and physically strong Female characters (such as Lightning & Fang) which I absolutely love about the game.

Fang & Vanille's relationship got me thinking when I first played the game. I was like: "are they...or aren't they?" But I think the fact that they didn't "change" the relationship when they (and if they ever did) made Fang a Woman made their friendship more interesting.
They kinda remind me of Xena and Gabrielle's special "friendship". (Does anyone remember Xena & Gabrielle btw?)

Fang is epic in all accounts, she has Bahamut for starters and Uses a Swallow Blade!
Her attack style matches her disposition of kicking ass and her Sentinel stamina is impressive.

I think that it was a good decision to turn Fang into a female. It balanced the party out with three females and three males. Another male-centric party wouldn't have been as good in my opinion.

I also believe that the game benefited from a tougher, wilder woman and more of an anti-heroine. Having the badass dude is expected in RPGs; FFX had Auron, FFVII had Vincent, FFVI had Shadow, and so on. Having a female as this game's badass character is quite a nice change, and she's not butch or a female man or anything either. She still maintains her femininity, which I really appreciate.

As for the relationship between Vanille and Fang... I thought of their connection as being a deep sisterly bond, as I can imagine that many inhabitants of Oerba had anyway (due to the nature of their culture), but that Fang and Vanille had an even deeper bond because of their Focus. That said the relationship did seem semi-erotic and almost romantic at times, but that is probably just the deep affection that they had for one another. I don't think it looked out of place, and even if it was deeper than that I wouldn't object to it, but I don't think that they did take it quite that far.

It wouldn't have been the same if Fang was a man really. The bond between the two wouldn't be as deep on an emotional level and all of the cuddles and scenes where they express affection would just be a repeat of Snow and Serah.


EDIT - Ha ha, yeah I guess they are a bit like Xena and Gabrielle. I like that in a way. They make us question without making the full extent of the relationship known to canon. If it was ever known then it could ruin the fun.
