A man in France sought revenge against another player who killed his 'Counter-Strike' character - by stabbing him in the chest with a kitchen knife.

Watch out who you kill in the virtual world, it may inspire someone to attack you in the real one.

That's what happened to one Frenchman, who was stabbed and nearly killed by a fellow "Counter-Strike" player, according to London's Telegraph.

Julien Barreaux reportedly spent six months looking for the person who killed his online character in a virtual knife fight, and eventually found the foe living only a few miles away in Cambrai, a town about 2 hours north of Paris.

The 20-year-old, armed with a real-life kitchen knife, went to the man's house and brutally stabbed him in the chest. The victim, identified only as Mikhael, survived the assault after the blade missed his heart by less than an inch.

"Barreaux was arrested within the hour and told us he had wanted to see his rival wiped out for killing off his character," a police officer testified at the trial, the Telegraph reported.

The overzealous video gamer will spend two years behind bars, and receive anger management therapy.

"You are a menace to society," Judge Alexiane Potel said. "I am frankly terrified of the disproportionate reaction you could have if someone looked at you the wrong way in the street."

This is why people who allow virtual lives and online forums and games to seep into real life shouldn't go online. If you have a reaction over a video game character, get a life, please. :hmmm: I really am not gonna comment on this further but it's just pixels and words at the end of the day. Making it any more is sad.

A real life kitchen knife, huh? This guy obviously had a problem in the head long before he picked up a controller. But just goes to show how any jackass can ruin something fun. Thanks, bro.

Once again someone blames video games for there mental problems. Personally I wish they would actually stop pointing the finger at video games and actually check out a persons background psychosis, everytime a psychosis report has been released in the past such as the "doom" massacre, it turned out the people were mentally unstable in the first place.

It's easy to say "Video games made me do it" as such is the blaming culture of todays society, its a no better excuse than the guy that killed John Lennon "the book told me to do it" or Peter Sutcliffes "God told me to" excuses.

Quite simply these folks are lunatics to begin with, and its about time the medical proffession stopped pointing fingers in the wrong direction and start admitting fault that they did not act on these troubled individuals in a timely manner.

Great. The media's going to break off into serious discussions all over again about how evil and corrosive violent videogames are and how they they should be banned etc. That always tends to happen and videogames are always the easy scapegoats for these kind of (relatively rare) incidents.

Quite simply put, this chap just has a few cards short of a full deck. He's an unstable person anyway if he would be so worked up over a blinking online game that he felt it should warrant the actual death of someone who killed his game character. That's the scary reality of online gaming. You just don't know what kind of nutter you are up against, or co-oping with.

I'm so glad that the victim survived. He was extremely lucky, and I hope he recovers soon. Only 2 years for the maniac? Justice is laughable sometimes.

Please. Video games aren't responsible. This guy was clearly out of his mind. Video games don't even act as a catalyst. If he had reacted this way to being bumped into on the street, he would never have made the news.

Yea, this guy seriously has problems. I mean, harming someone because they handed your ass to you VIA video game is just sad.

The media already blames people for violence no matter what. It's like people just forget that violence has existed since before games too. :mokken:

Okay, I've heard of addiction...but really? This guy definatly had some problems and probably played the game 24/7.
I'm pretty sure people should be able to tell the difference between a game and reality. Especially a grown man.
Trying to kill someone because they beat you in a match of a game? People these days...

Frankly I'm not surprised... I am surprised at how old this man was and that he should have moral values and what not... This sort of thing I would have expected from some WoWtard in highschool in the US or something. Not saying the US or WoWtards are unstable, it just seems a more likely situation if someone is mentally unstable at a younger age like that.

And WHAT does World of Warcraft have to do with Counter Strike? I mean really?

Well nothing really, it was just an example. Most news stories you hear about people going nuts over a videogame, often has something to do with WoW.

RAAAAAAAAAWR! IMMA KILL YOU ALL FOR RESPONDING TO THIS POST!

It's shit like this thats is so ridiculous to hear about. Ugh really couldn't he have created another character and killed his rival online? It would save time and have less consequences :mokken:

If things keep going this way, I'm afraid the end for mankind is coming

AMAGA DON'T KILL MAH ONLYN CHARA NOOOOO

.....rly I think it may have been a lot of about revenge. You kill someone online, they kill you back... then you kill them... vicious cycle really. Only way to end it was to get him at the source I guess.

That's hardly a majority. Sure, it's unfortuneate that things like this happen. Just a month or so ago I posted an article of someone getting stabbed in the brain (didn't get the point) because he was wallhacking in the same game mentioned in the OP.

This happened in an internet cafe in China (I believe). It's not because the game made them do it, it's because some people are just more mentally unstable, and simply can't stand having their way. Not all gamers are like this, thankfully. It's only a small percentage.

Though, it does raise a point. People like that do need to grow the fuck up. You get banned from WoW, think about it, and maybe realize that you being an insecure asstard is what led to your banning. Got killed in Counterstrike, RESPAWN AND TRY AGAIN. It's seriously not that hard. :ffs:

And it's that kind of thinking that makes it actually happen. A mature way of handling it would be passing it off and going about your life. But if you absolutely MUST get revenge, it doesn't have to be through real life.

violence isn't the only way to end it. He could of just forgot all about it and went happily on his merry little way! ^_^

You're right SKX... But see going about the mature way of doing things doesn't really pass through the mind of someone who's mentally unstable... owait... This guy in the OP wasn't mentally unstable was he? Just a nut job out for revenge?

That kind of goes to say that he was mentally unstable. Maybe he was never diagnosed, but he doesn't have to be to be mentally unstable. Also, we all know he was out for revenge, and he didn't play by anyone's rules but his own. We also know that the victim here couldn't out run him because everyone runs faster with a knife, right?
