So obviously he was a Black Mage, and was an older model like the Black Waltz's that could live longer. Is there any other information on this? I'm probably wrong but I just always assumed he was the first model or one of the first that Kuja had meant to discard while he was searching for the perfect puppet recipe. I just figured him being alive had to be some sort of accident because usually they werent allowed to roam free and he never mentions being created. This leads me to believe he was lost or mislocated very early in his growth or development process if the black mages had one.

So any thougts or information? Those were just my ideas without any real information and the possibility I'm forgetting important facts from the game.
 
If I'm not mistaken, it's said at one point that he fell out of the cargo ship and thereby landed in his "Grandpa's" dwelling. Said dwelling, that one town with the mayor, and the BM villiage are 3 places that discuss his backstory a fair deal.

He feel from a cargo ship and was found by his "grandpa" near that place where you find the Scorpio Stelazzio, basically he was just like anyother black mage but he was able to develop a personality in part to the influence of his "grandfather", that's how he woke up. At least that's what it's said in the game, although i haven't played it in a while.

They are all capable of developing personalities. Even the ones on the air ship save him and everything. I don't think he is like "every" other one though because they have short life expectancies and it says that the Black Waltz's have a longer life expectancy and the earlier models have a longer life expectancy. If he was like every other one he would have "stopped" by the time the ending takes place. So I guess that's all the information you get as far as what type he is from the game or developers?
 
I'm sure that it's mentioned by one of the other Black Mages that Vivi is a 'prototype' for what would become the mass production of Black Mages. This is one reason why he had a longer lifespan than the others. But that and the brief details of his life before the start of the game are all the info you're given really.
 
But he did "stop" right before the ending of the game, right? I never really understood the ending to FFIX actually... But yeah him being saved by 'grandfather' is probably what made him special.
 
Yes it's not shown but consensus is that Vivi dies before the ending of the game, and the narration at the end is from him before he passes away.
 
Vivi was no puppet that's for sure. He was able to develop free will and his own personality. He was able to decide right from wrong, and that's what made him who he was. It doesn't matter weather he was created in some factory, or weather he was actually born. It's his actions that made him who he was.
