For those of you who don't know what it is:

From wiki: Vocaloid is a singing synthesizer application software developed by the Yamaha Corporation that enables users to synthesize singing by just typing in lyrics and melody.

It's pretty popular in Japan, and I'm sure you might have hear something on youtube. The songs made from this program can range from:

Pretty damn amazing:

Chrono Trigger - Kingdom of Zeal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptC7dC7s5u4

To, not as much:

To, hilarious:

*Has no idea how to properly use youtube tags*

I want this program so I can try it out! :gasp:

I was gonna make a thread to ask a question about this, but I figure it's okay just to post in this thread, especially since I took the time too search for one first :P

Right, so my question is....WHY IS VOCALOIDS SO POPULAR?!

It's not an anime, manga, or even a game-it's a PROGRAM. Granted a pretty awesome one with a great concept behind it from what I gather, but I have a hard time believing majority of fans have actually used the program.

Furthermore, why do I think of Hatsune Miku when I think Vocoloids? I know there are other "characters" (even a Gackt one; ffs, he should spring to mind for me!) but what made her so special in the first place?

Actually, forget the program-it's this "character" that has the most popularity. Why? I know she's got the whole pseudo-loli charm, but that's can't be all, right?

Also, here's a vid of a live Vocaloids concerts with a 3D GENERATED IMAGE OF MIKU, WTF AWESOME BUT A TAD DISTURBING

Hatsune Miku. :ryan: I have such a fictional character lesbian crush on her, it's unreal.

Miku's the original mascot for Vocaloid. She's the primary lead in the game/synthesizer, she sings songs to you and in anime adaptations she's the primary character used for artwork.

Luka, Rin and Len are the other primary characters that got introduced at a later date when 3D models became a choice, but Miku was first and foremost... THE Vocaloid.

Also Vocaloid has spawned a few PSP games mainly with programed songs/anime sequences and 3D models, and from one of those songs a small OVA Black Rock Shooter.

Miku is also one of THE most popular figure/statue lines, producing several posable figures dramatic statuettes and nendoroids. :3

So there is an anime? Why is this never mentioned? Online it's usually only mentioned that Vocaloids is a program and that's it. I remember I even asked a cosplayer before, and they didn't mention an anime :ness:

PSP games make sense though. I think I might have seen one before and not totally realized it :hmmm:

Still...What is is about Miku that makes her so popular in general? I haven't seen such a following for some other "day 1" characters. Again, I know she's a cute sweetheart pedos don't have to feel bad about liking, but seriously, character with that appearance are a dime a dozen these days.

What. is. it. about. her?

Is it the hair? That's the only distinguishing thing I can think off. I can't even claim Sailor Moon rip off completely 'cause there's some distinct difference in thickness and obviously the colour.

It's not a full blown anime, it's just an OVA. But it's still a pretty good OVA and it's got it's own characters of recognition.. :monster:

Anyway I think it has to do with a lot. She's just a very unique looking character. Her voice (synthesized as it is) is just precious and some of the videos she's in, she ranges from adorable to downright saucy. Nico Nico Douga may have had a hand in making her popular though. :awesome: Chibi Miku with her leek stick :3

Ah. Nico Nico Douga. I'm not totally familiar with it aside from some friggin' awesome Sengoku Basara parodies, but I know it's freakishly addictive :8F:

I'm thinking there's some of my own biased here now-I actually don't really dig the cutesy singing techno voices myself. Won't say I hate it, but I wouldn't willingly click a link to listen to it for fun >_<

Vocaloid is very hit-and-miss. Some of the songs are absolutely awesome and so adorable your ears bleed from the cuteness, whilst others sound so awful your ears just bleed. It doesn't help that she sings in Japanese, which I have trouble taking seriously as it is...not to mention I really, REALLY do not like J-Pop/Rock/whatever, outside of the occasional anime OP/ED.

The best thing about Vocaloid is the fan-made videos ♥

I think in some cases it's hard to tell, but Martel's right it's very hit or miss. If it's just sounds and not trying to mix in words with some songs (like Tetris) then it's usually a hit. But Miku's had a lot of hits and sometimes it just has to do more with her.

I heard about the BRS PSP game it's supposed to be really good... if we get it.

Miku and co. really can't sing, their voices are far too high-pitched, even for Japanese songs...they're awesome for cutesy sounds, but actual words? They almost make my ears bleed...

I think the odds of us getting a Vocaloid PSP game are extremely slim...I don't think it's something that would pick up in the west, unfortunately...even Vocaloid songs sound better than pop music. Miku is every bit the Japanese idol - she's a young anime girl with ridiculous hair. Things like that don't pick up over here...outside of anime, anyway. Maybe if she was dubbed by 4Kids or Funimation she'd generate some sales over here :hmmm:

There's a vocaloid thread??
Wow, this is the first time I've seen it. I enjoy listening to their songs dunno why but I like the sound of synthesized voices XD
One of my favorite Miku video/song is the "Disappearance of Miku Hatsune". I like the "My farewell song at the highest speed" part, very awesome :D

Meiko > Hatsune Miku. That is all.

Ehh... Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu is good, Hatsune Miku no Geki Shou is even better, and there are some other songs that I like such as Love is War or World is Mine. The rest... meh. But yeah, I prefer Change Me by Meiko, hell, even some Kaito or Rin songs like Cantarella or Meltdown. Yeah, Meltdown is good.

Agree! I like Rin's high pitched voice in this one (referring to Meltdown)
I also like Love Is War, World Is Mine, Melt and Black Rock Shooter from Miku. I only know a few songs from Meiko. I like Kaito's Cantarella, Lord of Darkness and his version of World Is Mine. I also ADORE Luka's voice :x3:
Two of my favorite Luka songs:

ZOMFG! Why was i not aware of this thread? I love Miku the most and Vocaloids in general!

Love is War, Kokoro by Rin and Melt so far is my favourite, but i have a lot more XD

EDIT: NVM got it

Kokoro

Dunno why but that song kinda reminds me of a song from IDOLM@STER dunno what song though. I also found a version of A Cruel Angel's Thesis and Sobakasu (originally by JUDY AND MARY, also known as the Rurouni Kenshin/SAmurai X theme song) by Miku. Enjoy :D

I love the Kagamine twins and Luka. Yes, I am aware that Kagamine means Mirror and Rin and Len are, in fact, Right and Left. However, I call them twins because I like Sincest. So there. : P I was actually considering to cosplay Len this year for a future convention. I love Vocaloid. xD

Haha. I say the hardest to cosplay is still miku. That hair has gotta be a bitch to get right, tho Gackupo is pretty hard too.

Len and Rin is easier. Just grab a sailor uniform thats the right colour and a blonde wig that looks sorta similar and bam.

Urgh, Miku's long beautiful haaaair! * o *
I would kill for that to be my natural colour. xD

I do have a taste for rather out there hair style and colour, besides pink. Though if someone dies their hair, they better do it well. If it looks cheapo, i think its just bad.

Here is a colour variation cosplay of Miku's typical teal and black.

Iono. I rather like how she does it. Especially the hair ties and the headphones
