*sigh*

To say I'm unhappy with my self image would be an understatement. Growing up I was always on the chunky side, not quite obese but still overweight type deal. Then as a teenager I played softball and I really slimmed down. Once I got to college I started to gain more, and then lost a lot of weight drastically (I went down to 111 pounds at one point). That was in 2010, I believe. Now I'm back up to 150-155. About two months ago I was up to around 160.

So I've been trying to lose weight. And idk why I'm posting this here, maybe it's to vent my frustrations on my constant weight gain and loss. I'm trying really hard to get back down to the 130 range. I do little bouts of exercise everyday, take walks, swimming a lot in the summer, trying to watch what I eat.....but the thing is, I'm a college student who lives on campus. So the place I usually eat is the cafeteria. Anyone who has been to a college cafeteria knows that that shit is greasy and fattening. lol. Not trying to make excuses, it's my fault that I chose to eat the greasy, fattening foods over a salad. But I honestly love those foods. When midterms and finals come around I don't really care what I eat. I care more about passing my midterms or finals.

I'm also trying to figure out what body type I am. First off, I'm 23 years old and 5'3", weighed in today at 153. I think I am either a rectangle body type, inverted triangle, or apple. Some people say hourglass. I don't have an up to date meassurement for myself, so I can't really figure it out. In 2010 I was 38-28-37, so I was close to an hourglass I think. Anyone know more about body types and such? I may post a picture of myself is someone can figure out my body type by looking at the pic

According to most BMIs I am slightly overweight. Usually anything about 25.0 on the scale is over weight, while anything over 30.0 is obese. I usually check in between 26.0-27.0, depending on my weight that week/month. I also come from an Italian American family. So that means pasta, pizza, garlic bread, breadsticks, etc. lol. So that explains the constant weight fluctuations. That and I'm also on birth control.

Idk, I'm just really depressed with the way I look/feel. Anyone have any good advice for weight loss? Any success stories?

*hugs*

I know how you feel, Phoenix. When I was a teenager, I was quite overweight, weighing roughly 145 pounds. I'm 5 foot 1. My weight is no surprise when I look back at my diet... From the ages of 11 to 14, I went crazy, often eating entire pizzas or 2 servings of pasta for dinner, followed by chocolate trifles and full fat smoothies. I had no idea about nutrition. At school, I'd also eat fattening cafeteria sandwiches, crisps and two chocolate bars most days. Later on, I tried to be 'healthy' and picked flapjacks, chocolate soya milk and chocolate raisins from the 'healthy' counter, not realising that these snacks were actually fattening and sugary! :lew:

However, things changed when I hit 16 and finally decided that I wanted to change. It was a little difficult at first - I was still in school, exercising little, and often took a second helping of dinner at home. However, I'd often eat salad or rice cake snacks for lunch, fruit after school (as opposed to chocolate!). By the age of 18, I believe I was down to 126 - 133 pounds.

Things became a lot easier when I went away to Uni and got in control of my own diet! I'd have breakfast, a wrap or yogurt for lunch, yogurt as a snack and I replaced large evening meals with smaller evening snacks, most of which were fruit salads, small filo parcels (3 of them, 50 calories each) and eggy bread - I went a bit overboard at first, not really balancing my evening meals. I walked to Uni and back most days, so walked an extra 3 miles each day. The walking, I believe, did me the most good.

By the end of my first year, I was down from a UK size 12 to a UK size 8. Since then, I have found that fattening, sugary foods don't appeal anymore, and I have maintained a healthy diet. It's more balanced now than it was before, and I would always recommend that people try eating healthily and exercising in order to lose weight. I've been down to 111 pounds too, which I'd love to be again; I am now at 118 pounds, so I don't have too much to lose.

The best method for losing weight, I find, is to buy in lots of fruit and veg, protein and to eat porridge for breakfast with a banana, which is satisfying and sweet! Find healthy meals that you enjoy! Basic salads are boring, but they can be made interesting with some couscous and roasted veg; with some houmous with carrot and pepper sticks; with strips of smoked salmon and low fat cheese.

Here are some great ideas for lunches:
  • A home made pizza using a pitta bread, home-made tomato sauce (drain a can of tomatoes and cook with onion and dried herbs), topped with 60 calories of cheese and roasted vegetables.
  • 100 calories of pasta with home-made tomato sauce. Add some protein - chicken, prawns, white fish, an egg, low fat cheese - whatever you wish! Tuna and sweetcorn can work quite well.
  • A home-made sandwich! Use a high protein/low fat filling (I love egg mayo and tuna mayo - use low fat mayo). Have a piece of fruit afterwards!
  • A small jacket potato, filled with baked beans.
  • Baked beans topped with an egg.... Yeaah... I love it. :lew:

Here are some great ideas for evening meals:

  • A portion of lean protein (fish, chicken or quorn) with 2 - 3 vegetables.
  • 100calories of red lentils, cooked, with some tomato sauce stirred through them on a bed of green beans and baby sweetcorn, topped with a 60 calories of cheese and some herbs.
  • 50g couscous, cooked, with fresh herbs mixed through, served with roasted vegetables.
  • Chilli beans - a can of mixed beans, a can of drained chopped tomatoes, an onion and some chilli, all heated together! Serve with a spoonful of yogurt if you wish! =)
  • Vegetable soup with some protein on the side, perhaps some strips of chicken, some white fish or some tofu!
  • Ratatoille (that's aubergines, courgettes, red onions and red peppers, all roasted and then cooked with a can of tomatoes) topped with an egg and some low fat cheese! Alternatively, replace the cheese with a low fat vegetarian sausage; there are some fantastic types available!
  • Home-made vegetable curry!

Here are some great ideas for snacks:

  • Low fat yogurt with 100g strawberries or 100g banana.
  • A small bag of oatcakes, roughly 100 calories per bag.
  • A chocolate soya dessert, which should be about 110 calories.
  • A fruit salad - there are so many combinations!
  • A block of low fat cheese with a cracker.
  • A small pot of low fat houmous with carrot sticks.
  • 8 cashew nuts with a piece of fruit.
  • Celery sticks with 100calories of peanut butter and a sprinkling of raisins.

It's funny, but if you wean yourself off the unhealthy food by not eating it, you will find it stops being appealing. I used to LOVE full fat pizzas, but now I prefer home-made. I used to love lots and lots of cheese in sauces, lots of Cadbury's chocolate, but now I find the first to salty and the latter far to sweet! :lew: I can't stand the creamy desserts I used to love, nor the buttery sauces, nor the pastry.

A few more tips:
1. Don't cut out all of the bad foods. Allow yourself one bad snack every two days and one bad meal every fortnight.
2. Try out lots of recipes. Find vegetables you love, low fat protein you love, and work with those!

Of the upmost importance: adopt a new lifestyle. Don't DIET to lose weight; find a good diet you can adopt for life, filled with balanced healthy meals and the occasional treat! In order to live life to the fullest, you need to be fit and healthy; do not aim to be skin and bone! Feel positive about yourself and the food you eat. Eat the foods that make your body feel energetic and refreshed! You and your body deserve it! =)

first off. cut out all fast food. i went from 205 to 170 in 3 years. what i started to do is cut out fast food. if you must have fast food once in a great while. also being as you come form an italian family, have tasty food is always around, cut your portions down. take about 3/4's of what you normally would eat. also when you can get out and get some sort of exercise, i usually pop in the ipod and walk around the neighborhood when i am not at the bmx track (but i race so that is a different story) even doing wii games or kinnect for xbox will do as well. another huge one is also to cut out sodas, they cause bloating. i gave up pepsi and coke products for arizona teas. if you don't wanna cut out sodas, drop the rate that you consume them.

so far we got :

cut out or down on fast foods
cut food portions down
cut out or down on soda intake
exercise when you can

doing all this wont get you down to your ideal weight over night but over time. but as you do the suggestions from me and lirael, you'll findout that you will have more energy and also helps out with mental health as well. i kid you not. you will notice you will be more positive. when i cut down on all the above and started exercising more, i have been more positive toward things.

for me i cut out chips and such and added fruit in. wheat ever is in season. i once sat there and ate a pineapple with a spoon (just cutting the top off) , asi siad i traded off sodas for arizona products, fast food fir healthier choices, i eat a lot of subway..lol

I'm having weight issues too :( I used to be really, really thin. Almost too thin and no matter what I ate I would stay that way so I started to adopt really bad eating habits and now that I'm older the weight is starting to stack on. I went from 43kg (very underweight) to about 65kg in about just over a year. I was so depressed and I hated myself but the fucking junk food tastes so good.

I've finally started to lose weight again though all I have been doing is eating less. I still eat junk food, I'm trying not to but I think i am actually addicted to it :wacky: I am also a lazy fuck so I can't be bothered making myself food for work.

I have been skipping a meal either lunch or dinner, I don't know if that is a healthy thing to do but that's what I am doing, I try my best not to eat the junk food in the work social club basket and if I can get away from the desk I will go down and buy some fresh fruit from the fruit stall downstairs.

Over the past few months i have lost approximately 6 or 7kg and I am finally starting to feel a little better about myself. I will be so happy if I can get to 55kg, even happier if I get to 50kg and that's where I'll stay. But yeah, I think the key is to cut down a lot of food. I am doing it wrong because I still eat a lot of junk but if you're not addicted to it and are able to, cut it out of your life and maybe bring some snacks to college with you? I don't think there is anything wrong with eating an unhealthy snack at least once a day though :hmmm: so long as it's nothing too fattening :griin:

You're already exercising a bit which is really good too, so good luck!!!

I actually know my worst enemy: soda. I drink it all day.

A few years back (in 2009/2010) I cut out all soda when I was told a tooth may have to come out. It freaked me the fuck out and from that I swore off soda for a good year. That's when I went from 130 to 111 pounds. But obviously it didn't last for long. Pretty soon I gave into soda and then kept drinking it and drinking it. This summer I'm trying to cut back on it. I'm not going to go cold turkey like I did a few years ago. But I'm weening myself off of it. I also have a bag of potato chips in my room that are calling out to me, but I refuse to eat any. lol. Once in a while is fine but I used to be able to go through a whole bag within a few days.

I'm trying to count my calories and staying under about 1500 a day. As a max. I'm looking more towards 1300 a day. I know anything less than 1200 at my age and height is a bit on the dangerous side. That with swimming should be able to slim me down a little by the end of summer.

Then when I go off to college I'm going to find a gym and go at least twice a week! And yoga!! lol

Thanks everyone for the advice :) I am a very picky eater unfortunately. I almost live off of Italian food, and fast food. My problem is that I'm a very unhealthy eater and I really don't like trying new foods. I'm going to try and kick that habit. And if not, I'll just cut back on how much I eat. In all honesty I can eat an entire pizza pie by myself.....something I used to boast about, but now I realize that's not the best thing health wise XD I'm cutting back to two slices, or those home made pies, etc.

First rule of thumb: Put down the fork

It's harsh, it's cruel, but girl I've been there. I'm about to put any and all shame I have/have ever had on the forum but I aint got no shame no mo' so it's all good.

Growing up I was always a chunkier kid. But I was also a lot taller, usually within the top 5 tallest kid in my grade. I've also got big feet. So I've just been built... big. Growing up I never thought anything of it, but I went to my aunt's house after school and she always had all this junk food. That's where it kinda started for me. Shortly after that, I started getting self conscious, kids tease you and all that, so I just started working out at home, obsessively doing 1000 crunches a day/night. It worked out all well and good for a while and found some old pics where I thought "Dang, I was working it back then." Then I found a bf who liked 'bigger' girls and thought, "Fuck it, I'll just marry him and be happy."

Long story short, that didn't last, broke up, went traveling, and I slimmed down a tad again. When I came home, I had a new bf who liked me as I was, big or small, who helped me see through a leg surgery. Now leg surgery is where it ruined me. Being confined to a bed, eating nothing but junkfood as my bf loved it, chips, cookies, easy pasta... I ballooned.. hardcore. At this time I was already on the biggish side as it is, but just giving up, I got even bigger, and pretty soon I was 235lbs. But again, I'm a 5'9" with size 11 feet, so I'm built... big. But there's no getting around the fact that I was a fatty fat fatter. Holy fuck.

After having some chest/breathing problems, I realized this had to stop. Once I was abled and walking/going back to work from my surgery, I started hitting the gym obsessively for about 9 months. I went at least 3 times a week when I'd be sore on alternate days and when that subsided, I started going every day. I monitored what I ate, ate a little less gradually and the weight came off. Within the first nine months, I lost the first 50 lbs I needed, and then I plateaued. That's when you have to push yourself harder, more reps, less rest time, more protein, less fat..

I sat comfortably around the 170-180 range until I lost my job and got stuck at home. Having nothing else to do and couldn't afford going into town/driving/memberships, I bought a couple cheap DVDs off ebay or downloaded them, and worked at home. Cheesy dance videos, yoga, whatever worked. Over the following 9 months, I lost another 20 lbs. Then I started dating someone new, and spending time at his house and eating a little less frequently. The less frequently/snackish I was, the less hungry I was too. I was still drinking plenty of fluids in the meantine so then over another 3 months, I lost about 15 lbs.

It took about.. 2 and a half years in total with the lee-way time inbetween, but I ballooned up to 235, nearly 240lbs but then shrunk back down to 150. So I lost nearly.. 100lbs in almost 3 years. Granted, I shouldn't have been that big to begin with, and I can try blame it on anything, family, habits, bf, but YOU are the one who puts the food in your mouth, you need to be accountable for your own actions. You can't expect the weight to change if you don't make the change yourself.

I sat comfortably at 150lbs for 9 months before I had my second knee surgery, but it's been 6 months and I've only gained 15lbs so far. I know what NOT to do this time, but not being able to move (for the first 3 especially) couldn't be helped. But now I go biking and do extra stuff at physio since I'm not working again/can't buy a gym membership. I'm determined not to let it happen again.

I went on one of my rants again. :monster: Basically, I was really fat before, now I'm only kinda-sorta fat.

Alright, Let me tell you how I manage, but this is not a fun fun plan, but it does keep the weight off.

Guys bodies are different than girls, but doing this technique I doubt anyone is different.

1) Get on a schedule, I don't care if it's unhealthy, just be on a eating schedule. List out what you eat each day on this schedule. Make 1 day a completely random day and throw something odd in (just don't gorge yourself).
2) After you create your schedule list the approximate amount of calories per each meal, drink.
3) Get used to Water.. No soft drinks. Sorry High Fructose corn syrup and carbonation is evil to any diet.
4) If you need to drink alcohol, drink in moderation and stick to liquors and less beer.

Once you have mastered those steps... I'll dig in a little more.

1) Meats.. No Bologna, No Fatty Meats, No Fast Food. Eat as much lean meat as possible for protein. Lean Meats generally are chicken without the skin.. with moderate dipping sauce (NO MAYONAISE!)
2) I reeeeeiterate.. START TO LOVE WATER!!!
3) Store one day, where you go nuts. You don't need to make yourself miserable in life.
3) Think about the most hated word.... Exercise. No matter what, you have to exercise. Whether it be just walking your dog 4-5 times a day, that's exercise. Try to go on longer and longer walks and such.

I myself have started back on my marathon routine where I am eating lean cuisines and drinking alcohol on occasion, but trying to quit smoking out my umpteenth billionth time. I eat like a pig sometimes, so I have to learn to adjust with my schedule. Also I try not to eat so little I get headaches. I try to snack A LOT! Snacking helps. Also when you snack, don't be a wise ass and pick up a candy bar. Pick up something you like, but eat it in moderation.

That's really the .. Road to being healthy.. Now if you want to get fit completely, I would keep going and going.

- Shu

With the water thing, if you can't love water, drink Crystal Light. It sounds stupid, but it helps. Get a large water bottle, about a litre, and empty one packet in. It dilutes it enough without it being sugary, but still having flavour. It says you use one packet for two cups of water, so this works even better. It helps A LOT. I HATE water, any kind of water, bottled, tap, filtered.. but I can drink 3 Litres with crystal light. It's cheap, you get 10 packets in a box and depending on where you live, it's easily accessible. The US Has a large variety and so does Canada, but not as many, Green Teas, Meta Boosters, Ice Teas, and just.. juice.. my favourite's Strawberry, or Green Tea Mango.

I'm just too addicted to soda to give it up :gasp:

I'm trying to wean myself off the soda and onto water. It's not that I hate water. I just love the taste of Sprite :inlove:

I probably will never completely give up soda. But I am limiting myself on it.

I used to install floors and other labor centric work. I would eat a lot and burn a lot of calories and it all worked out.

I switched to having something like a desk job.

Went from being active & burning calories to sitting on my ass. :elmo: But, I still wanted to eat the same. I put on some pounds.

It seemed like a good opportunity to experiment with different ways to take off excess weight.

-With soda, I think the main thing is the amount of sugar it contains. Sprite has close to 40 grams of sugar per can, IIRC. That's a lot and one of the reasons why its so fattening. Another thing with soda is, its unhealthy to drink the acidic type on an empty stomach. It'll raise your stomach acidity and can be bad for your health in different ways.

-The idea of exercise: jogging, running, walking dogs, etc being good methods to lose weight is pretty much a sham. It is good for your health and a good lifestyle habit to have. But, for losing weight those methods are absolute shit. Weight training or workouts aimed at building muscle are by far the best approach to losing weight. Lots of people disagree on this point. AFAIK, all of those people are fat. I'm skinny. Listen to me.

-Diet and nutrition are very important also. It helps if you understand that veterinarians recommend not feeding your pets table food. The preservatives, additives, and assorted chemical compounds in the food you eat can actually make your pet sick or cause it to have allergies, etc. That's how unhealthy & harmful the average food you consume is. Watching what you eat and making an effort to eat healthier by itself can have a massive effect as food standards are so low and non-existent that a little bit of forethought & education can go a long way.

-Etcetera, etcetera. There's much to be said on the topic not many are aware of. :busta:

1) It's not the sugar, it's the type of sugar. High fructose corn syrup is down right awful. It takes forever to break down. As a runner, it takes twice the time to break down sodas as it would a donut/ice cream or anything else with natural sugars.

2) Please don't listen to this. He has no idea what he is talking about. I am an example of walking/running/jogging. I barely use any free weights. I have gone from 214 to 201 in weight in the last two weeks with just running and sit ups and push ups. I maintain my weight and have a super high metabolism, due to my spread out "food plan" and exercise. Before this.. I have a desk job, where all day every day I code/test/do client calls. I have no way to really do exercise during this time, which mentally leaves me exhausted... so you physically have to force yourself back out there to keep regular. Walking and Running and Jogging, have been proven time and time again.

Just look at the percentage of Fat American Men and Women to European, the reason why is.. we use our cars and or automated vehicles such as trains/subways to get around even a mile. Down south.. it's disgusting to see. How lazy we have become.. with people not even able to get up to pick up the remote control to watch their favorite show.

Walking certainly does help! :) I've never invested time in weight training and/or the gym; my weight loss was entirely down to healthy eating (lots of protein and veg, with occasional treats) and walking 3 miles every day. I only started cycling recently and I've never been fond of running. -_-

I have never enjoyed soda, alcohol and can't remember drinking sugary soft drinks; I have always opted for the 'no added sugar' variety, so I would certainly recommend cutting those out. :hmmm: During the period in which I lost the most weight, I would drink about a pint of skimmed milk (that's 35 calories per 100ml) a day. That provided me with some good protein, lots of calcium and little fat. I now drink light soya milk because I figured out that, despite being a good weight, I was having too much sugar with a pint of milk and 3 portions of fruit every day! Light soya milk is basically sugar free and, whilst it was bitter in tea at first, I now prefer it to milk! It works well in porridge; not so much with cereal, but I'm not a fan of cereal anyway. :lew:

I'm not a firm believer in the whole.. walking thing. I did a lot of cardio/muscle combination at the gym, but when my (quite obese) friend approached me for tips, I asked her.. "Well, what else are you doing?" "Oh I walk everyday to and fro into town." ...."..and?" "And what? Walking's enough. But I haven't lost any weight yet." If you do JUST walking, it's harder to accomplish goals, not to mention that it's more different and difficult for girls to achieve weight loss goals compared to men.

1. Cold water is more difficult to 'break down' than warmer water nearer to room temperature. Something being harder to break down can imply your body expends more energy doing so & it results in a person burning more calories. Sugar(and HFCS) being fattening has more to do with caloric density, iirc.

2. 201? How tall are you? See, this is why it may be incorrect to view religion as being a cause of wars. It doesn't matter if the topic was weight loss, people would still be closed minded and view their own indoctrinated method of doing things as a "one true faith" and denounce everyone who disagrees with them as being "infidels" who "don't know what they're talking about".

I've tried the exercise method. I used to run 3-4 times a week, in addition to other things. I think my body fat was around 8%.

I've tried other methods. I know what works and what doesn't & have a general idea of how effective each method is. Can you honestly say that you've tried methods other than the one you currently use? And, if you haven't tried any other methods then why so insistent and smug in saying they're "THE DEVIL"?

BTW..... You... still do... sit ups? Did you know a lot of personal trainers and experts recommend not doing sit ups as it can be bad for your back?

As far as I can tell, when it comes to dieting & exercise you're still living in the 1970's, brutha. :monsmash:

Word to your afro wig and bell bottoms.

Soda is my guilty pleasure. But I swam an hour today. And cut back on my eating, though I did cave and had a slushie.....but I was at the pool all day and it was freaking hot! lol.

So when I first started my weight loss journey I was clocked in at 161 at the doctors office. Today I got on the scale: 151. :D

As for walking....I don't think walking in and of itself can change your weight THAT much. But compared to just sitting around it's better than nothing. XD

When I exercised in the past I cut back on my calories, walked, and did about 2 bouts of 10 minute cardio workouts. Doing that I lost about 6lbs by the end of the summer. Now I'm hoping to do the same but adding swimming. So far it's working a lot more. But walking is still good, so don't diss it. But by itself? Maybe it might work for some and not for others.

A lot of my friends have this problem. I eat a lot, I have some weight which I want to lose but it's not that much. I'm going to football too so it's not a problem for me.

My advice:
Don't check your weight everyday.
Never eat at night.
Don't eat cheese nor meat. Prefer fish.
Don't eat too much bread.
Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits.
Drink a lot of water and green tea. Green tea will help you a lot.
Play a football/basketball game or go for running 3 times a week.

Wait what 8(

This is most definitely not true. Weight training is for building muscle, cardio is for getting your heart rate up. Lol I disagree and I actually at one point in time was pretty overweight...I joined the gym and lost the weight all by running and ellipticals. I don't mean to start a giant argument with Riddick here, but by my experience and by other's experience, this isn't true. If you want to lose weight do some strength but focus on your cardio. Getting your heart rate up so you can burn calories and therefore burn all the excess fat is the way to go.

And basically what Shu said :lew:

I'm a sporty person who was once overweight, listen to me :]

Walking instead of driving etc. is really just a booster. Doing it alone you won't lose any weight, but you do burn more calories walking and it can help contribute to a more active lifestyle.

Also PhoenyxAngel Soda is my guilty pleasure too :gonk: I just cannot live without it x_x Which is why if you do drink it, only drink it once during that day and then try to lay off for a few more days. And if you drink soda that day, try not to have other sugary things that day. Make soda like a dessert. Just remember everything in moderation! High Fructose corn syrup can be reaaally bad for you, but once in a while and not too much is nothing to worry about.

I don't mean to start a giant argument with Riddick here, but by my experience and by other's experience, this isn't true. If you want to lose weight do some strength but focus on your cardio. Getting your heart rate up so you can burn calories faster and more efficiently and therefore burn all the excess fat is the way to go.

And basically what Shu said :lew:

I'm a sporty person who was once overweight, listen to me :]

How long did it take you? Probably months... :elmo:

There are better methods that would've done the same job in weeks with less time and effort. :ness: But, I s'pose, little girls who are at the age where they like to pretend they *know everything* wouldn't necessarily recognize that.

Basically what Shu said? ^_^ Was that before or after Shu showed he doesn't have the slightest clue why sugar is fattening or that metabolic processes that are more 'difficult' consume more energy(burn more calories)?

Straight answers or shhh.

U silly.

Please do not ask other members to "shh" if you don't like their answer. Thanks. ;)

I said 'shhh' because I know she doesn't have a legit answer & her only option is to 'shhh'.

But, of course, you being an american probably means you'll over-react and over-sensationalize everything.

So, over-react, have your little hissy fit (WITH VIGOR!) & don't let me get in your way, bro. :ness:
