I was originally going to post this in the general FF section, but I figured we could talk about other annoying characters types not found in FF games.

1. The helpless girl every other character loves. Basically, this girl is usually sweet, loving, but always getting captured. This doesn't bother the other characters, in fact, they will not shut up about how wonderful she is. When she is captured, no one can do anything but worry about her. It's even more annoying when she is supposed to have a great amount of power. Oh and her life is always much more important than any other character's <.<

2. The environmental friendly character. I have nothing against anyone who is an environmentalist, but this character is just plain annoying. You will be reminded every five minutes from this character not to litter, eating animals is bad, and that basically anyone who does not feel the same that they do is a bad person. This character will sometimes make the other characters feel bad for not seeing things their way.

3. The goth. Pretty much just a preteen or a young teenager trying to be cool. We'll be reminded how creepy they are and every other character will be afraid of them. Even more annoying is when we are reminded how unique and original this character is...

4. The bitchy tough girl. This girl is just constantly on her period. If she doesn't get her way, she throw a hissy fit and physically beat another character. And no one else seems to mind. Every once in a while we'll see her soft side, or get her life story where she was severly abused by her parents or something along those lines...

I can't stand the Chaste Hero, who is basically defined as follows:

"The Chaste Hero is a character, usually a teenage male, who is completely oblivious to embarrassment of women and to romance in general. Flirtation is dismissed because he honestly doesn't get it, and pushy insistence from the Bottle Fairy or Cool Big Sis is waved off with angry annoyance. This can be a paradoxically commentary on the character's lack of "maturity," but strangely, this rule does not necessarily mean the younger male characters of the cast won't react to attractive people."

The Estrogen Brigade (rabid bands of fangirls) and Daddy's Little Villain (random cute evil girl) tend to tick me off as well as they are just too cliche and predictable to add anything to a video game. Mooks annoy the hell out of me, especially when they are bent on attacking me when they know perfectly well they have NO chance of winning. It's just lazy storytelling right there, when I'm level 99 and equipped to the teeth they should be running for the hills.

^^ That's exactly the type of character I dun like either D= it totally pisses me off because they can't help themselves and are always the center of attention. This type of character is also weak in battle too(usually) >.> Like for instance in Dragoons I thought Shana was that type of character and everyone thought she was sooo pretty and blah blah blah. She also sucked in battle and I hated her >.<

Another annoying thing IMO is characters that were always serious and could never take a damn joke like lighten up! I just found that rather annoying because they were boring and I didn't like them one bit.

I think that's it really :monster:
If I think of more, i'll post it up later ^-^

The anti-social teenage male protagonist who through the story gradually comes out of his shell and learns valuable lessons of loyalty, friendship, and most importantly love from his team mates.
:horsebeat:

Seriously there should be a UN resolution against this type of character.

Actually, I hate the characters who follow the line of "Woe is me and oh how unlucky I am in life/love/etc". It seriously is utterly annoying. They have no dept, are completely predictable, and are a complete pain to see through from beginning to end. I also hate the type of character who is excesively confident yet a crybaby when serious situations arrive.

In fact, I dislike:
Cloud (after he found out who he was)
Tidus (he just wouldn't shut up)
Vaan (don't even know why he is there)
Noctis (because he seems to be like a Squall + Cloud + Tidus all in one...):ffs:

I hate the stubborn characters that never learn from their mistakes, or the one's that are hopeless in that you cannot talk sense into them and you are forced to watch them make some sort of ruinous decline that causes trouble for everybody.
I'm talking about characters like Riku, Seifer, and Kain.
And as necessary for a story as they may arguably be, I'd glady do without them.

I usually like all types of characters to a certain extent... even Vaan from XII, who I know gets a lot of hate. Sure, he wasn't the best main character, and I think he would have done a lot better if he'd been a supporting character instead. However, I did like him.

But I really don't like pathetic girls who can't do a lot for themselves (and are often really poor during combat...)
Penelo from XII and Aeris in VII stand out for me... they were so helpless, I really didn't like their characters or combat.

And Tidus. There was just something about him, maybe the way he was too naive. Or maybe it was just the way he runs across the world map... that always got me, he looks so... girly.

I'm not a fan of the damsel-in-distress either. The sort of character who is kind and sweet, who the male tends to falls in love with, but is captured or put in a dangerous situation for umpteen times, remains helpless throughout and barely becomes more capable. She would be captured, the story revolves around having to save her, the viewer or player constantly has to feel sympathetic for her, and all that.

The stubborn characters are also quite irritating as well. The ones with the cliched backstory of someone killing their family, then wishing vengeance on the perpetrator. As a result of this sad story, they believe it's OK to behave with an utter lack of deference and respect to others. Of course, this sort of person ends up being a complete bastard at times, not listening to reasoning and being really difficult to communicate.

Similarly, I don't like the people who cry about how their life is already over. They are always miserable, unable to smile until very late into the story, and are perhaps slapped regularly in the face to see sense. This is the sort of person who tends to give up and never look on the bright side as well. Honestly- cheer up, it's not the end of the world.

  1. I really don't the messanic, 'I am always right' characters who always get their way despite why other people say.
  2. I hate overpowered really boring heroes who never lose anything and always wins no matter what.
  3. Although I can understand why people may not enjoy angsty, antiosocial characters like Squall, at the same time a lack of angst is very jarring especially when you go through hell and they get over it fairly quickly. I understand that people want to slap some sense into this character but the other side of the spectrum isn't all to good either. I like a balance.
  4. I hate the Chessmaster types who always seem to have the Master Plan going on and any attempt to subvert this plan doesn't work and it turns out to be a part of plan.

After watching a movie last evening I remembered how much I hate the 'unbelieving' character. In a lot of movies a lot of strange/weird stuff is going on and at one point in the story the main character has to inform someone else (often a good friend or even worse for this character type, cops) about everything that has happened. These characters don't believe the protagonist and say the story is probably imagination or something like that. Of course it is entirely logical characters will react this way, but in a movie you can see where this 'sub plot' is going for miles away: the unbeliever faces the thruth (often in a shocking scene) and is just in time to help our hero from doom so the hero can go on to save the day. (Or is horribly killed, in the case of horror.)

I just want to see a movie where everyone immediately helps without going through this crappy cliche scenario first.

I really hate when you have a couple and their lives revolve completely around each other. (Or in some cases, one characters life revolve's around his/her lover). These characters pretty much can't do anything with out each other. If one is in trouble, which will happen quite frequently, the other will go to great lengths to save that character even if it means endangering the other characters. And according to those two, the entire rest of the cast can pretty much go to hell because their love is just so much important than everyone else's feelings. If there is an event where another character is in danger, some time along the way, one of the lovers will be captured taking the focus off the original character who was in danger. And it's even more annoying when the rest of the cast won't shut up about how perfect the two are for each other.

I also hate characters who steal the spotlight. They are typically over powered Mary sue/Gary stu characters that are just there to be cool and awesome. Tokyo Mew Mew comes to mind. The main character Ichigo pretty much did all the fighting while the other Mews just stood around and watched in awe. The only time they got to do anything was if an episode revolved around them. There was seriously no point to even having a team because Ichigo always took care of everything. Oh and she also had the absolutely perfect boyfriend that it was super important to save even if it meant the end of the world. <.<

For me, it definitely has to be the pretty girl who whines all the time, tries to fight, fails and then ends up being rescued. A prime example of that would be Smallville's version of Lana Lang. Whilst I've grown to like her in the later seasons, I absolutely hated the fact she was playing the damsel in distress and moaned all the goddamn time. I was really glad when Lois came into it and Lana finally left. I hope she doesn't come back at all. >_>

1. Mary Sues who are percieved as tough and able to defend themselves when really all they do is lay around like a loaf and get protected by others or turn any ordeal into dramalogue 411.

2. Whiny, metro, wanna-be tough guys, who wear all black yet seemingly have perfectly styled hair at all times :awesome:

3. Repeditive, skanky, typical-slut girls who everyone happens to 'like for their personality!' or lack their of.

I will say; that does connect to one of the things I loved about Freddy vs. Jason: The adults and the police took Freddy Krueger seriously and went to near-extreme lengths to permanently remove Freddy's influence from peoples' dreams. Just...the fact that all the people in power had finally set up a safety net was great.

Anyway to the thread topic (dividing into two categories):

Normal Characters:
  • The "Token Female". This especially applies to shonen series; a situation where a female character is introduced and then ends up doing absolutely nothing useful for the majority of the series. She's just put in there as if to say "yes, the vagina is real." For the love of god; it's best if every character is balanced.
  • The "Cool Guy". I understand sometimes an elitist can make things work. At the same time however, it often works best if that character's pride and power becomes his downfall in his own eyes.
  • While this one isn't a character per se; I don't like it when the story is predominantly gloomy/pessimistic. I don't want sunshine and rainbows all the way, but I've never liked stories that take huge amounts of time solely to focus on how crappy a character's life is or how everyone in the galaxy is against them.
  • The brats. I don't like the whiny brats whose sole purpose is to be noisy obnoxious and break tension moments in the most in-your-face way possible.

OCs:
  • The awesome new guy. You wanna have an OC join a team of canon characters or the like; live it up. Give him an early spotlight or two? Okay. Just don't make him the star of the team. I remember back in the days of Teen Titans, seeing countless people create the "super awesome badass cool guy of power" who would immediately steal the spotlight by beating Slade singlehandedly, obsess loudly over his own darkness and how much torment he was in (despite being able to have fun and get along with everyone), and then have sex with Raven two chapters later. Later incarnations of such characters were often inserted into Naruto and depending on gender; either got it on with Sasuke or got it on with Hinata.
  • Unimaginative canon character relatives. I don't entirely oppose the idea of OCs related to canon characters in some way, but I have a few requirements for such things. 1: Powers should be original. 2: Character's prior absence must be well explained. Simply "Long lost" does not count. 3: Don't make them revolve around the canon character's identity (see "Teen Titans" under "Raven's sibling".)
  • The demon wolf girl. Usually this is a girl with long hair and wolf ears whose powers are listed as "black magic and has wolves". They are typically very social beings who don't get along with most people despite being friendly and often have a dark past that darkens their sunny disposition and makes then unhappy while prone to bouts of anger despite their cheerfulness.
  • Characters who clearly haven't had any thought put into their powers/abilities. See; "Black magic", "dark matter", "shadows", and "chaos power" ...whatever the hell any of those actually are.

Hmm...Hard to say actually. If anything, I tend to like the the character types people really hate. Not to mention I think people sometimes have different definitions of what a particular character type really is :hmmm:

"Emo boiz" is over done, sure, but if it's as a result of something that happened to them during the story, I have a hard time dismissing it so easily then.

And "whiny" characters feel subjective me. People claim Tidus and Hope are whiny characters, but I didn't see them that way myself.

The typical harem lead who either a dogged nice guy or some jerkass with a girl getting gene and a badass family. What do they see in thiose guys?

I don't like characters who serve mainly as 'fillers'. Like Selphie (FF8) for example: She's just kinda there, and her character development suffers because of it. All you can tell is that she just wants to get some thrills.

The people who join the team and are the best, but soon turn out to be working for the bad guy. It's so obvious, kind of like in Teen Titans: Starfire's sister. I saw it from the beginning, and thats just one of the millions of examples that came to mind.

Characters I hate;

Characters that are exceptionally mean to people for no reason (who were nice to them to begin with) and yet everyone seems to still like them even though they have unjustly gotten mad at someone else. This is annoying, if you walk up to someone and say "Hey!" tying to be nice and the person replies, "I don't want to talk to you, I have problems so stop acting like you know me." would you really just brush it off and keep trying. Chances are, no, you would dub this person an 'asshole' and move on with your life.

The 'perfect' character. So just gary/mary-sueish characters in general. Especially when there's a character who seem to excel at everything and can do anything perfectly at the age of 10 without having any prior background to doing something. This also applies to characters who are too smart, I don't mind smart or nerd characters, but it doesn't really make sense when someone is 12 or 16 and knows everything in the world.

The nice-but-not-so-much hero. Like a character who's supposed to be 'strong' and 'kind' but they are incredibly selfish and usually only think of themselves or how they can save their damsel in distress girlfriend. But this also applies to the damsel in distresses to, who are supposed to be so nice and nurturing and yet all they think about is themselves and the hero, acting like no one else is trying to help them.

The overly cute to the point of obnoxious characters. Characters that try to be as 'cute' as humanly possible but only end up being annoying in the end (Shippo from Inuyasha being a prime example). They try to refer to themselves in third person and have weird dialogue patterns to 'cute' up how they talk. They are unnecessary and never actually help anyone and when they decide to be 'strong' they whine and cry the whole time they're doing it. Or they try to be strong but get hurt and have to be saved and they managed to do was get in the way (Mei from Fullmetal Alchemist DEFINES this).

Actually I thought Mei was quite useful much of the time. Counting for her is the fact that she managed to save Scar from both Ed and Al (no easy task given their respective skill levels at the time), was a key player in fighting Envy in the North, and she totally saved Ed and Al's asses against The Father when he shut down Amestrian Alchemy. The only times she ever got nervous/whiny over anything were when she was getting closer to The Father underground (understandable given his nature and the fact that even Scar's brother was unnerved by the alchemy style), and when Envy started being a dick in the jar with her. Other than that I don't really recall her being an in-the-way whiner.

(Besides, I'd HARDLY call her unnecessary given the events of chapter 107.)

And for the sole purpose of singling out Aizen from Bleach: The god-powerful characters who can't be stopped and continually pull abilities out their asses.
