In the town you have to buy dry meat.
This is needed to gain a new character, Gau.
When u see him, throw a dried meat and e will join u.
He will lead u to a cave where u have to walk around a bit and he will dig up the helmet.

yeah madmonkey is right getting the helm is mandatory to proceed. Gau is a boy that grew up with the animals on the veldt and will join your party if you give him dry meat. From there he says he'll give you a treasure and you have to go through a dungeon and the prize for that is the helm. Good luck.
