Whether to buy a cheap PS2 or a new PS3 (for playing FFIX)

I've decided I want to play Final Fantasy IX for the first time in the summer. I can't decide whether to fork out £200+ for a PS3 and hope it will be available from the PSN, or to simply buy a PS2 for £60-120 and get FFIX for around £30 from Amazon.
Obviously a PS3 would be a better long-term investment, but its quite a lot of money for a student :gonk:

What would you do?

The PS3 is still quite a bit of money, but I would advise you to choose that over a PS2. As you said yourself, it would be a better long-term investment and it saves you getting one later. :)

And yes, from what it looks like so far, FFIX will be available on PSN soon. Even if you buy the original boxed game, I think the PS3 can play PS1 games. I haven't tried though.

If you get a PS2 don't forget that you'll need to get a PS1 memory card so that'll add to the cost. They can be a bit rare nowadays (well, brand new ones are anyway).

I'd get a PS3; IX will probably be available at PSN by the Summer, also for the longterm like you said.

Thanks for your speedy reply!
I've tried playing FF6 on someone else's PS3 and the image quality was quite appalling. I believe the downloads rectify that problem though. I'm also a bit worried about PS3's not supporting PS2 software:sad2:

PS1 disc games can be played on any PS3 so even if FFIX doesn't come out for PSN, which is extremely doubtful at this point, you can just buy the game itself. Provided you have other games for it that you want, a PS3 would be worth it in the long run. If you've never had a PS2 though you would be better off buying a backwards compatible PS3 so you can play PS2 games. It may cost a bit more but you will have access to all 3 and possibly save a little bit of money.

Ah! I wasn't aware there was such a thing as a backwards compatible PS3. I'll have to ask about it at a games shop I suppose. Thanks for your advice:)

Yep there are only 2 BC PS3 models. I can't remember which ones they are but if I remember right they don't have much memory but you can always upgrade the harddrive later if you need to. Since they're not normally being sold anymore, they will cost quite a bit, especially if you decide to buy a new model.

I'd get the PS3. Now, I know your a student and everything so, especially for you, it'd cost more but, like Vircon said, if you don't get the ps2 and IX disc form then you could buy it on the psn (which i'm sure will come soon) even then the backwards compatible will work fine as well.

Do what you want but, i'd choose the ps3. I'm sure (unless you already own it) IX would be hard to come around. Well least thats what it seems.

Plus, you could damage the disc whereas it'd be stored on your hardrive of your ps3 which, i'm assuming, makes it more safe.?

PS3. Better to save up a bit more/longer and have something for future games you might want, then to buy the PS2 and then decide there's a PS3 game you really want later on, and ending up buying the PS3 afterall. Double money = wasted money.

I'm just saying. :mokken:

This. Even though she stole the point I wanted to make. :sad3:
Apparently the PS3 may have another price cut as well, alongside the 360 so you might be best off waiting 'til after E3 next month to see what they announce. :)
