Obviously it differs a lot between games, but the usual trend I find is that items are substantially weaker than White magic you can have at most given points in the game, though this becomes less so when you bring in rare items such as Elixirs and Megalixirs that aren't easily obtainable. My general style is to therefore make as much use of potions and items that cure status ailments as possible whilst in a dungeon/world map, since the relative amount you heal through these items is not constrained by a turn within battle. Doing so means I can save MP for white magic in battles when I really need it. I also tend to try avoid using White magic outside of battle for this reason, unless it is ridiculously inefficient to heal by other means, such as if the entire group needs healing and 2 spells can get me there, as opposed to 10+ potions.
Funnily enough, in FF1, once I got hold of the Healing Helm and the Healing Staff, I almost exclusively healed during random battles using those. No cost aside from a turn on one character, and the healing was group wide. The only cases where I found I couldn't fall back on them were in some boss battles, where I needed to actually make use of White Magic, which was fine, since I saved all my MP anyway thanks to this!
