It's not that the dating scene, the Cloud x Tifa talks, etc. were bad... it's just that the more serious parts of the game, I think are better. To me, less is more when it comes to these friendships/romances/whatever you want to call them. This game could have been better if it focused more on the main plot. VII was too much of a dating game.

I didn't think there was much of it after the dating scene, to be honest. Other than a brief moment between friends at the end of disc 2.
Maybe, but the short contrast between wooing women, going through a small but frenzied haunted house, and fighting a crazy person was too much for me. Perhaps I just played the game too fast, which kind of eliminates the time spacing.

Ditto. 8(

If anything, after disc one... I don't remember any romance. Just a lot of corny friend-laugh moments. :/

I personally didnt think there was all that much romance in it at all. To me the major romance of it all was when cloud had to dress up as a girl to win the Don's affection. Otherwise I dont realy think it was very prominant.
The wooing part im not to sure about as I ended up on my "date" with Barret...as for the crazy person wich one? They all seemed rather nuts to me.....
But every RPG ive ever played has had some form of romance in it and I rather like the cutsey lil bits of it...I just dont think VII had a lot of it in the game .

I see what you mean, and I agree, a LOT of the game focus felt too.... introverted at times. Character development is important, you can't just have raw plot, but at times it felt like an anvil was being dropped on my head.

That being said, the theme of FF7 was "friendship" so the character relations were supposed to be very highlighted and important. It was said in the extra features of AC that the theme was friendship and how it affects the characters. So in that light, the game was balanced exactly how it was supposed to -- not too much on plot, and not WAY too much on characters, but the characters definitely being highlighted. Much better than the REPEATED anvil dropping in 13, if you ask me. <_<

If anything, I think there should have been a tad more.
I feel like you should have had a more distinct option to either fall in love with Tifa, Aerith, or be just friends with the both of them.
(I think it would've been fun to have Yuffie be an option, too. xD)
I dunno - just my opinion. But the story was already weighted pretty well, I think.

I personally don't feel like it was focused on that too much at all. It's really the fans that turned it into a huge love game because of the Love Triangle, for all we know there isn't one. 8( Then everyone got their own favourite pairing and it's now one of the most discussed 'love games'.

I can't say it was overdone in my opinion though, I think there was a nice balance. :gasp:

.... Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. :wacky: Don't try that. :wacky:

There was plenty after :wacky: But.... I don't think it was overdone. :lew:

Seriously, Kira. :wacky: When I played the game, the corny friend moments just got out of hand. In a matter of fact, that's pretty much all I remember after disc two. :mokken:

Not even saying there was strong romance in the first place. :hmmm:

VII could have been alot more romance heavy considering it centers (or has centered for the last 10 years :wacky: ) around a love triangle. It could have been ALOT worse, but considering other FF's I think VII is one of the lighter, less romantic games of all. Other than the date itself which kinda takes away the romance if you go on it with Barret, then there really isn't anything.... romantic about VII.

Centered on a love triangle?

:hmmm:

I thought it was centered on a very complicated backstory that involved a shape-shifting alien and a greedy energy company. :wacky:

But I think you nailed it about the "for the past 10 years" part.

Considering the amount of debates regarding the LTD you'd think that romance would be more prevalent in FFVII (then again, this is exactly why we have the LTD because it wasn't really developed in any specific direction).

When I was playing it I didn't really sense a lot of romance there at all. Sure relationships were hinted at, but it was really left up to the player to decide which girl / man / animal to pair with Cloud, or if to pair him up with anyone at all. The player was given quite a lot of freedom (well... Some freedom) to choose romantic options in text, and if they wanted to they could have made Cloud be a cold badass to all people at many points in the game.

Asides from the date scene (which was dependant on the player anyway) and a few wishing, fortune-telling, star-gazing scenes there wasn't a lot of romance in the game, in my opinion. There are no kisses or marriages in FFVII, unlike in several other FF games.

I do agree that a lot of FFVII was centred around friendship and family ties in times of hardship, but love? I don't think the romance aspect was forced on us. If it was there, it was there because the player wanted to view it / lead Cloud in that way.

Romance? What romance? I must have missed it. I was too busy breeding over sized mutant chickens and collecting and mastering magic rocks.

Ha ha. :D

This is exactly what I was thinking. When I first played the game, I had absolutely no knowledge of the story whatsoever, and didn't read anything about it anywhere from outside sources until after I'd finished it. And I barely saw any romance at all throughout the entire game. For me it honestly felt like the story was this:

50% fighting Shinra
40% Sephiroth
9% Cloud's backstory
1% everyone else's backstories

And when playing RPGs, I usually try to read into stuff a lot 8( I honestly don't understand how the love thing got so blown out of proportion by the fans when there was barely any indication of it at all in the original game. IMHO there was more romance in FFIV, where you had a legitimate love triangle
(Cecil, Rosa, Kain)
and a guy very obviously flirting with a girl, even having a
thought bubble with a heart in it at the end of the game while thinking of her (Edge and Rydia)
. When compared with something like that, it doesn't really feel like SE was trying to get very much of a romance theme across in VII.

It's a difficult game to discuss because the length of the game, and the experiences you have, to a certain degree depends on how you play it. I guess if I spent an extra 40 hours tackling... I don't know what... my overall perception would be a little different.

I didn't really see much romance in the game at all. Tbh, when playing through the game, Cloud didn't seem to have much of an interest in either girl. Sure, Aerith and Tifa liked him and so did Jesse but there weren't any big romantic scenes or anything. :hmmm:

I can't talk about what disk I'm on or not since I downloaded it onto my ps3...but I don't think the "romance" if thats what you call it is overplayed. If anything I've had more :ffs: moments to be honest...where someone says something so cheesy and your just like ohh man.

"Just one date" ... :ffs:

I personally feel the romance was a little too spontaneous and over the top for my liking. I couldn't help but feel it popped out of nowhere for certain scenes, then simmered down into complete obscurity until another romantic scene was needed.

Maybe this is just my own personal opinion, but I think that if two characters are in love, whether it's Cloti, Clerith, or Cled XIII, there needs to be a subtle undertone of romance every couple of scenes, rather than this full on blast of pure romance every few hours, such as the date scene. Romance has to be subtle as well as full on and passionate, and I just saw this forced attempt at romance every few hours and was a little disappointed.

The game has few romance scenes and mostly because Cloud is not interested/mature enough for that and I think it is better so. We don´t need another "defeats the evil/marries the princess" story. The only thing that I don´t like is that women fall somewhat in love with the protagonist, and that is too cliché. Maybe if women fell in love with another character, it would be more interesting.

By the way, the dating and fortunetelling things are more to create expectations on the player who will never be fulfilled, like we learn at the end of disc 1.

Whoever thinks Final Fantasy VII is too romantic surely hasn't played the other games in the series. I actually thought that Final Fantasy VII didn't have enough and I'm usually one that doesn't like too much. I advice you to never play VIII then because that has to be the most over the top romantic game in the series and wasn't all that realistic. FFIX in my opinion played it perfectly because Zidane couldn't get Dagger so it was kind of like a Challenge but it was only a part of the story not THE WHOLE STORY like FFVIII. I think VI had some cheesy moments with Celes and Locke. I think VII is the one game that didn't have much romance at all. The Date and under the highwind are really the only things out of the whole game I can think of.
