Who else thought the romance was overplayed?

I didn't think there were all that much of it and I can see why. Not much romance you can get away with with those graphics. I know they were cutting edge for their time but I have to imagine quite limiting in some things. The fans definitely do overplay the romances though and I know a few people who sadly won't even give Final Fantasy VII a chance because of it.

Too much of a dating game? I think you're reading too much into those scenes and failing to see what they were really trying to portray.

For example, the 'date' scene between Cloud and Aeris wasn't really intended to be a romantic scene between Cloud and Aeris. The whole date thing was what Aeris picked up from Zack and was intended, primarily, as a joke. When she grabbed Cloud in the Gold Saucer to have their date, I think it was simply because Aeris was troubled by the similarities between Cloud and Zack and wanted to spend some more time alone with Cloud in order to dissect the differences between them both, and to learn more about Cloud. Hence her statement 'I want to meet... you.' Meaning she probably felt that Cloud was too much like Zack and wondered who Cloud really was. I don't think Aeris held any particular romantic feeling for Cloud. Her heart belongs to Zack, hence why she's with him in the Lifestream.

As for the Cloud and Tifa scene. I think Tifa does hold feelings for Cloud, but that is the only real scene where that feeling is expressed. Until then, Tifa was mostly trying to sort out her own confusion with Cloud. As far as she was concerned Cloud was not at Nibelheim during the Sephiroth incident, so she was concerned whether he really was Cloud and needed to stay close to him in order to figure this out. People like Barret made jokes about them being 'more than friends' but until the latter half of the game that really wasn't the case. It just seemed that way, hence the appearance of an Aeris-Cloud-Tifa love triangle.

But seriously, these were the only scenes. It can't really be thought of a dating game for those reasons. Romance really was not the issue. The whole focus was the plot, beating Sephiroth and Cloud finding out who he really is.

It is the fan's obsession with the romance that makes people think the game's main focus is this romance, or at least that it plays a major part in it. I've written up the whole game as a novel and analysed every scene and I really could not find anything between the characters that even suggested romance apart from those potentially confused scenes with Aeris and that one moment with Tifa near the end of the game. Oh, and that one bit with Vincent and Lucrecia.

FF8 has more romance than FF7 does. In fact the whole of the third disc is practically dedicated to it.

Honestly I didn't think there was much of a romance. The only real date scene is that date at that carnival place, of which you can get Barrett.
