Why do people hate Tidus? >_>

I hate Tidus for several reasons.

1. They set him up to be a great character from the word go. Sure, he was a show-off, but we could accept that. The first cinematic of Zanarkand portrayed him as a great athlete. HOWEVER, Auron gave him a sword and one second, he couldn't hold it for shit, next he's in battle carrying it like a natural. Here's an idea... Give him a better weapon! I don't like it when games portray someone as not used to something, then throw that aspect of the character out the window without any explanation. I still don't understand how a swimmer, someone who has to use his ARMS and his legs cannot hold a freaking sword, though.

2. He's stupid. The thing is, I'm fine with dull and dumb characters, as long as they have moments of clarity where they really shine above the rest of the cast. Tidus just doesn't... He never asks anything that ANY person with ANY degree of common sense would in ANY situation. Example:

Auron: 'We called it 'Sin'.'
Tidus: 'Sin?!'

Let's see... better questions we could have had here. 'What is it?', 'How did it get here?', 'Why is it attacking Zanarkand?'. Seeing as enemies in a Final Fantasy game tend to wait around until a cutscene is over before fighting you, I could have bought them having a short explanation right there. But, no... All Tidus does is repeat the name like an idiot.

3. He's a crybaby. As I've stated, none of these would be that bad if there was something about Tidus's personality that was redeeming. BUT NOTHING WAS. After getting trapped in Spira, all he ever does is whine and bitch about how he wants to go home. Which brings us to point 4.

4. He IS EMO. All the people who say he isn't, use some freaking sense. He keeps moaning about wanting to be back in Zanarkand. What do you think would happen if he got his wish? He'd be dead. Drowned like all the other people who lived there. Unless of course his Blitzball training allows him to breathe underwater FOREVER, and then, he'd just be living in an underwater ghost town bawling his eyes out until the water eventually subsided, and then he'd live there as a cranky old hermit. NOW THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN INTERESTING LEAD CHARACTER.

3. He is Selphie to the 90th degree hyper. That is to say, when he's not bawling his eyes out and depressing everybody, he decides to cheer them up from their Tidus-implemented depression to make them happy, then make us, the audience and players, annoyed as all hell.

4.
He was a mass hallucination.
The idea on its own would have been great, had the character not already pissed us off. Instead, it left me wondering why we didn't get a better, more thought out and likeable character in his place, so that when it happened, it would ACTUALLY BE AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE.

5. His voice and dialogue, though this could be tied into the character being stupid, so I won't bash it too much. However, I don't buy the excuse that it was the first Voice-acted FF, so we had to be lenient. Square had billions and billions of yen to work with. If they really wanted, they would have made it better.
Maybe it would help my argument if I pointed out that I thought all these things out about the game when I was 12? Look... I know a lot of people approach these games like movies, shutting your brains off as soon as you see the opening credits... But can it hurt people to think while they're playing?

And this only seems to happen with the uber-popular franchises like Final Fantasy. So it annoys me to no end when I'm in the fanbase but other people in the fanbase seems to be a bunch of zombies. No pointing out of plotholes or character inconsistencies or lack of character development ever criticized, people just blindly WORSHIP these games. I know it's a bit off topic, but this is how I feel when logical points are just cast aside for a bunch of people to just speak like a hive mind and discuss nothing.

I think that when Auron first gave him the sword, he was surprised at it's weight, since no where does he say "I don't know how to use a sword" And, give him a better weapon? Somehow I don't think Auron had a whole load of weapons with him, so Tidus couldn't exactly pick and choose.

That would be shock. I always interpreted that as "sin? Wtf is that?" by just saying it's name, it implies all those questions in one. Plus, in the heat of the moment, with death staring you straight in the face, you're most likely to say the first thing that comes into your mind, so therefore, I think had he and Auron been able to have a calm conversation in a safe environment about Sin, Tidus would have asked these questions anyway.

3. He's a crybaby. As I've stated, none of these would be that bad if there was something about Tidus's personality that was redeeming. BUT NOTHING WAS. After getting trapped in Spira, all he ever does is whine and bitch about how he wants to go home. Which brings us to point 4.

I'm sorry but did you play the game? Tidus stops "whining" and "crying" about wanting to go home sometime between Luca and Bevelle, and after that point, he's far more concerned with defeating Sin and keeping Yuna alive. I thought that was a redeeming personality trait - he develops from being a self-obsessed person, to someone who is in love with, and cares deeply for, someone else - and thinks of their situation instead of their own.

4. He IS EMO. All the people who say he isn't, use some freaking sense. He keeps moaning about wanting to be back in Zanarkand. What do you think would happen if he got his wish? He'd be dead. 1) We don't know that Dream Zanarkand was completely destroyed, or underwater. There are ruins in the game, which shows how the city wasn't submerged.

2) If you were in Tidus' position wouldn't you be worried? Wouldn't you want to return home, to everything you've ever known and loved? To see if that was okay? Tidus would be unaware of WHAT would happen to him if he went back. So, I fail to see how this makes him "emo" or "stupid"

3) About the whining, you're over-exaggerating and generalizing this to a large extent, Tidus develops as a character, and focuses more on keeping Yuna safe than going home.

3. He is Selphie to the 90th degree hyper. That is to say, when he's not bawling his eyes out and depressing everybody, he decides to cheer them up from their Tidus-implemented depression to make them happy, then make us, the audience and players, annoyed as all hell.

I thought Rikku was the hyper one in the game, not Tidus. Heaven forbid someone be happy and enthusiastic. I was unaware that great and interesting characters had to be miserable all the time and weren't allowed to show happiness.

I don't see how a great plot twist is dependant on how likeable the character is. Tidus not "pissing us off" wouldn't make the fact he's a "mass hallucination" any more effective. Also, if you don't like Tidus, consider how the twist effected the other characters - particularly Yuna. I found it to be a really great twist, and loved how it effected the others, and Tidus himself.

That's just subjective, one person might dislike the voice, another might love it. SE were clearly pleased with it, and I don't see how a bad voice is "tied into the character being stupid" that's just ridiculous.

Maybe it would help my argument if I pointed out that I thought all these things out about the game when I was 12?

Not really, most of them are over-exaggerated and greatly generalized. Such as the examples of Tidus doing "nothing but whining" or "crying all the time" when it's obvious to most people playing the game that, yes, while Tidus DOES have whiny and crying moments, they aren't CONSTANT.

Personally, Tidus annoyed me at the start of the game, and his voice annoyed me to no end, but I don't see why he's hated as much as he is. Squall is a more depressing character, Zidane is a more hyper/happy character, while I found Tidus to be more realistic, and found his development and role in the story interesting.

I always liked him. I didn't think he was annoying, even the voice. He was a little hyper, but I thought it was adorable :) Besides I liked the fact that he was different than the usual loner male protags, more upbeat. Naive yes, but more likable imo.

I didn't hate him,but he wasn't my favorite character either. I did find his voice to be annoying though.

I didn't hate him. I actually liked him a lot. I don't know why people find his voice so bad. I thought it suited him pretty well.

Be honest about Tidus

ok lets be honest for a sec here... did you REALLY hated Tidus when you played the game?

Many people troll about how Tidus sucks but I didnt really had a problem with him or the game in general, in fact I really enjoy the game, the soundtrack, the colors and general design, and the ending specially.

Every one is entitle to their own opinion of course, but to me I really like the game in general, the FFX-2.... naaaa.... not so much, but FFX definetly like it

:drag:

Course I hated him, Auron should've been the main character!!
I also spent the whole game trying to decide if he had the same voice actor as Ratchet from Ratchet & Clank.

Anyway, on a more serious note, I thought he was a bit annoying and arrogant. But I didn't mind him being there. He was just another character. Definitely wouldn't ever say I hated him.

I thought Tidus was a pretty ideal main character, I liked him quite a bit.

I couldn't stand his voice, but his look and personality were fine with me.
He was also one of my favourites to use in battle.

I really wasn't aware there was a large hatred for Tidus..

Hmm development wise, i'd have to say that i didn't mind his whining so much as everyone else did. His voice was ok, it's different from the Cloud and Squall voices (KH voices.)

The thing i don't like about him is that, battle-wise, he diesn't have any real stregnths or weakneses. We have on their grid path:
Yuna - The healer/Summoner. good Magic Def stats
Lulu - Black magic. Good against Elementals and anything with an elemental weakness (real handy!). Good MP and Magic stats
Wakka - Aerial foes. ranged. Accuracy, dodge and Str.
Auron - The Tank. HP, Def and Str.
Rikku - The Theif. Can instantly KO Machina and steal rare Items. (anything with the speed spheres)
Kimahri - Learns Fiend abilities with Lancet. versatile in which grid path he can choose. (he takes Aurons path in my games.)

With Tidus, from what i've seen, he's mainly focused on accuracy on his grid path, not so much on stregnth which for me, is real annoying, I don't like to piss around in battle i like to just get the job done and be on my way.

All in all, untill Tidus gets Haste/Hastega or the Caladbolg fully powered, he's pretty much useless for me.

Yeah Tidus' abilities are mainly time based, and his main strength is his speed, without the extra magic and stuff he is quite fast compared to say, Auron, which is why he is useful.

Anyway I can understand why people dislike him, but he isn't the worst character in the FF Series *cough Vaan cough*

Lol Vaan's jjst a kid with his head up in the Clouds. He doesn't even go on about avenging Reks, eventhough that was his main Agenda.

As for Tidus, that would explain why he sucked so bad for me >.> i'd always go Kimahri's natural grid path which lacked speed nodes.

I didn't hate Tidus. Sometimes he'd be just a bit over the top and sorta annoy me, but he was a good character, if you got pass the stiff-acting points xD

There was one thing that I didn't particularly like. It was Tidus always whining about his father, but it wasn't that bad to the point it made me hate him.

He was funny and cool. :P

I dunno, I think Tidus was a pretty cool main character. The growing hero type. I mean, his personality's pretty childish at first, but he develops as you play the game.

Battle-wise, I liked him for his accuracy and time-based spells, which come in really handy, and I guess he's not all that weak. Compared to Auron or Lulu I guess he is, but he's still useful nonetheless.

I'm playing the game currently and I'm about 1/2 through.

I actually buy the father/son tension, Tidus had a jerk of a Dad that drank and talked down to him. I could see this causing some emotional problems on a young character.

I also bought the Yuna relationship. He teaches her that there is more to life then sacrifice an important thing she had to learn!

The only problem I have with him was the voice actor... but I can't take that out on the character.

I've enjoyed watching him grow from a troubled blitzball player to a loyal guardian hero. I look forward to watching him grow even farther.

I don't hate Tidus.......neither do I like him however I do think he was the best choice to have the leading role. His voice might not be the best, and his main strength on the battle field is speed. However he did do ONE thing that is the most annoying thing the FF series in my opinion.

He fake-laughed and made Yuna(one of the hottest and best FF characters) do it as well. COME ON that was just terrible..........

I don't hate him,I don't like him he's ok........at the end of the day he is a unique character I reckon in the FF series he doesn't have much about him thats likeable.

When you play an Roll Playing Game, the main character is the role that you play. Now, would you rather take on the role of the cool tough guy (Auron) or the whiney weak silly person(Tidus)? Most people would rather be Auron than Tidus.

Also Tidus could be very irritating at times. Imagine having to hang out with him in real life. Or imagine him being the person that you have to depend on to save the world!

Aw, I like Tidus! I think he was a good character, 10 was probably one of the best FFs in my opinion! Yuna and Tidus' love story was so cute!

Rids you're harsh:lew: Hes is just a kid.

So much hate for one of the better FF Male leads IMO, I dont get it?
they lump us with grumpy Cloud and Sqaull then leave us with the Womanising
monkey Zidane:lew: and then Cheerful Tidus.

I found "The Boy" to be quite useful in battle being the all rounder and not having any real strengths worked to his advantage being able to remain in battle longer then the Party mages Luluy/Yuna getting more turns than Khimari/Auron.

I used him most efficiently with Wakka and Rikku, Tidus is great.

The character of Tidus has quite a few flaws. He is young, he is obnoxious, naive, immature, his personality is just absolutely irritating and his voice was even more grating (especially that laugh). I prefer a character with a little more dynamic, someone I can relate to who is real and not just a complete joke.
