Seriously, my favorite game, and has been for a long time. Why? Because, the story line is amazing, I loved the game play, Graphics were amazing, considering the year it was created, and the characters were so thought out. Thats why i thought it was the best.
They like it because it's a good game.

cmon people, you can't honestly say that it sucked, i mean, sure, the gameplay in dirge of cerberus wasn't too flash, but advent children made up for that in just about every way, and the original was pure brilliance for it's time
Well I like FF7 because the characters all have legitimate background stories as well as good motivations.
Some of the FFs don't make any sense as far as having random characters join the story line for no apparent reason.
Even Yuffie has a reason to be in the party, although many people fail to see the history of the Wutai/Shinra war.

I thought the summons in the game were awesome. No, you couldn't control them like some of the new games like X, but they were epic. KOTR was kind of disappointing considering how much damage it does, but Hades and others were perfectly done 
Okay, personally I thought this game was "O.k." I didn't see anything special in it. Granted though, I played it recently....not when it first came out.
As for when it first came out, I am not surprised it was considered so good. It was the first to break out of the 2D shell. I mean...obviously it was looked at more so than any other FF game.

ff7 is the best game that square soft/enix created... EVER... i dont caer wat anyone says. ff7 was a masterpiece. if anyone sayed it sucked i would have slapped them right across the face... REALLY HARD!

Eh, I thought IX was the true masterpiece.
I thought it was good game and I enjoyed playing it, but I don't know if I would call it awesome.
This is all my opinion of course, but I never found anything real "awesome" about this one, including the characters and the main villain. The game was fun, but it kinda got slow and boring at times as well. For the most, I liked it, but I truly feel that this one came out before it's time.

It's just a totally awesome game overall. I mean, sure it may be overhyped, but when you sit down to play it for the first time, you get a huge rush of everything coming at you all at once.
What do I mean by that? Simple enough: The game offers everything. Characters are great, plot's great, the places you travel are memorable for eternity, etc. The bosses then, who can forget them? Sephiroth, JENOVA...the WEAPONS. Wowzaa. Awesome game.
