Why does everyone hate Cyan?

As far as I am concerned I really liked Cyan as a character more often than not he was the one doing serious damage and has saved my party on more than one occasion, by the same token I thought his skills were really good and I also liked the way his character developed.

I also like Cyan. The character's story is really well told. The kind of misfortune he has to endure. But still finds the courage to go on and fight the good fight. He is a very noble character and sometimes I wish I could do that too but hey I'm not perfect :(
The way he talks is also really amusing. With the old english vocabulary.
A downside of this char is the sword tech bar that slows really slow... I find that disturbing because he has some really good and strong attacks. Maybe if I train him the speed will go up. I don't know.
Also he reminds me of the knight in FF IX, that has to protect the princess.

I thought cyan was alright personally. I played with him meh off and on I would say but I ended up dropping him for another character i just lost interest

I don't know of anyone, myself included, who hates Cyan. Quite the opposite in fact. I think he's a great character storyline-wise and helped add a lot of depth to the game's storyline as a whole. The only problem i had with him, was in battle situations when using his swordtech ability because it was so damned slow and had to take my attention away from the rest of the party who could've been getting bashed around while i was waiting to use his swordtech.

As a result of that, i didn't use him much because the ability was too slow and as a magic user, there were better choices; Celes, Terra, Stragos etc etc.

I liked Cyan as a character, I thought he had an awesome personality, and I liked how he was introduced to us - so we know he's a man who's suffered from a lot of tragedy. However, once I began playing in the World Of Ruin, I no longer found Cyan useful as a party member, his special skills take too long, and he's too slow to be really useful.

He's really awesome in the World of Balance, not so much in the World of Ruin.

I have to agree with Mark, when I first used Cyan I thought he was great, I loved using him for a while, but eventually, especially WoR as Mark also mentioned, he just seems to lose his effectiveness, not that I don't like him as a character, it's just that I prefer to use the others over him xD
Edgar is quite similar too, his tools become much less effective once you reach WoR.

CYan is a heroic figure like Leo. I care very little for gameplay in rpgs and most games so I focus on character and story. I have to say, Cyan is one of the greatest characters I have ever seen in a game. He's not hyped up or awesome. He is a noble swordsman who is the defender of his own domain.

I liked Cyan. I used him quite a bit. He has good attacks and love using his Sword Tech. His story made me so sad though. I felt so bad for him. ;( I've never actually heard of anyone hating on him,so that's news to me.

I didnt like him my first play thought, but I have been using him a lot in my second play through and he's a good character

People don't hate him as a character within the plot, but gameplay-wise is where the peeve is. The fact that his Bushido/SwordTechs need to take time to charge may put off players who are impatient, or are speedrunning the game.

I find one of the best things to do with this samurai in western armor is to just turn him into an all-out attacker.

I just never have room for Cyan on my party. I always like to have Celes, Sabin, and Mog. It ends up being a choice between Edgar, Locke, and Terra. I'm not a Gau fan!
