I have noticed square has made a few mobile games/are making them. Is there that big of a market for these games? There is the new XIII spin off, the game about the Turks before the events of VII and a couple of the older FF games are available for mobile like FF1, to name a few. Rereleasing a game on a phone doesnt seem too bad, should be too much to make it work on phones, but the original games seem to befuddle me. Seems like there would be a bigger market on either a)the DS/PSP or as a small game that would be downloadable off Xbox Live, PSN, or Wii store.

Apparently in Japan, cell-phone gaming is a pretty big market. That's probably the reason we don't see these games ported to North American European markets very often, because there's a much lesser emphasis on cell-phone gaming in those countries.

The only FF game I think is available for cell-phones here are the FFVII Snowboarding minigame, and the Dirge of Cerberus cell-phne game. Even those, I'm not too sure of their availability, but I know none of the others are only available in Asian markets.

It's a shame too, really. I'd like to play FFVII:Before Crisis (the Turks game) and FFIV:The After, the sequel game to FFIV. I'm not too sure about the phone thing though, I'd rather have video games on my video game consoles than on a phone D: Maybe one day they'll port these titles to a more Western-friendly medium.

Yeah I would like to see those games appear on pc or ps. Don't have a nintento or xbox :p. I don't quite understand why u should play games on a cellphone. But thats going off topic.

I can't say I like them being on mobile phones but I've noticed recently more and more people and getting better and better phones game-wise such as iPhones and similar so I'm starting to understand why they're doing it, I just think it might be a tad too early to start making phone games for Europeans and maybe Americans.

I guess it's just a simple way to play "On the Go". I mean by taking a look at the world today, almost everyone's got Cell Phones. I didn't buy my own until I hit 20, but I've seen kids under 10 who've parents have bought them one.

It's a money-maker because people are the go and have demands as well. It's mobile, can be played away from home, and satisfies Square Enix because they make money as the games are Mobile-exclusive and forces people to get it on the phones instead of it being available on a console or hand-held.

It's a good market in Japan. It's a safe market. That's what Yoichi Wada is into. He loves what's safe. That's why we've seen a lot more remakes, less new IPs, and change of sale markets under his presidency. He's not a gamer. He's a businessman and he's not one for risks. He'll simply do what's necessary to survive but never to thrive. Safe isn't always the right answer and maybe it'll come back to bite him.

It's because mobile phone gaming is a huge market in Japan, and they want to exploit this. I've noticed that more portable devices - like iPods and Phones - are starting to look into ways of introducing video games to their systems - it's nice to have a portable, easy to play game on your phone, as you can take them anywhere and they don't stand out as much as say, a DS or a PSP.

I despise this phone franchise, particularly when the games are exclusive for the phones. I want to be able to play all of the games on the same platform as their original counter-parts and not on a tiny little phone. On top of that, I'd have to buy a more high-tech phone than the one I already have and, after buying every other platform to play the games, I'm sick of catering to them. xD

This is how I feel and these games arent even really being brought over here, there are a few that I would love to play, but given they are in japan only and on phones only, chances of me ever playing them are slim to none

I live in Japan and have the FFIV sequel. It's really cool. It plays just like the SNES original, but new characters of course. Golbez is old and has no mask, there are two Kains (a good an evil one of course), and the main character is name Theodore (and I thought Cecil was a wussy name). Anyway, I read that in an interview with the game's director, they have plans to release it in English for an actual system.

Dude, that's awsome. I really hope it comes out on a handheld in the west, this is a title I really want to play (just cuz I love FF4, and the story seems pretty interesting).

Now maybe they'll port over some of their other phone games... :gasp:

Yeah. Seriously, trying to play a real game like this on a phone is one of the worst experiences around. First I had to buy special earphones for my phone so I didn’t disturb everybody around me while I played, but I still have to play with the damn phonepad, which is horribly awkward. Oh, and guess what happens when someone calls you; the game goes out (actually it pauses it but half the time I can’t get back into it).

Just a quick reminder for people to stay on the OP topic, obviously the thread is likely to go a tad off here and there, but lets not lose sight of the first post all together

As is previously said, Japan makes mobile games because it's a big market, and they love their phones over there, and gaming, so I guiess it would make sense to combine the 2... we just don't see the thrilll in it. It's too annoying and fiddy D:

Handheld porst would be nice, but, can't say Id hold my breath about this

Well I hope it comes to America soon, maybe downloadable on like xbox live and psn, that would my my preference. But if I get an iphone as my next phone that wont matter really I guess....did they give a time table at all?

Also I had no idea phone gameing was so huge in Japan...that is why I never understood it, but it makes sense now.

My guess is that they are just trying to market to get the widest fan base they can get. Believe it or not I still get people giving me confused looks when I talk about final fantasy

phone games are a big market in Japan because so many people spend so much time on trains. Eventually they get bored and start to surf the net, then they see ads for all these games, so they think "well I'm stuck on this train for another hour, so I'll download one." A phone game is like $3-5, but when they're seperated into chapters like the FF ones it can get pretty hefty.

Hmm money sorta comes to mind but that goes without saying.
I personally dont like the idea of playing an ff game on my phone i dont see how it could be the same, wouldnt the game length be shorter the graphics less and then uv gotta work on a really small screen. Saying that though ive never played an ff game on my phone so my oppinion isnt coming from experience.
What would be cool though is having some of the older ffs on ur fone I-VI as the graphics would be suited and itd be cool playing them when yer waiting on the bus or whatever.
