They're not very wise at all really.

Thinking they can just push through when there is clearly no room left in our mouths. XD

I am actually about to have all four of mine taken out at the end of May and I get 11 days off in total from work.

I have to go into hospital for day surgery and then have someone take care of me until I'm all good again. >.< Lucky Steve. XD

I had braces since I was 13 up until I was 15 and I've still been visiting the orthodontist ever since for check ups every year. I still have a retainer on my bottom teeth, which is glued on the back (so no one can even see it) until he decides it can come off.

I actually had to get braces on my bottom teeth about four years after I got them off as my bottom teeth started to overlap each other again and that was what made him use the permanent retainer.

Anyway I had an x-ray again for the second time in three years and the Wisdom teeth were coming in sideways at my other teeth, so I thought it best to act now and just get them out already. It was always something I knew I had to do. Luckily for me they never came through early like most people.

It ranges from the age of 18-23 for most people to have their's come through. The surgeon reckons mine still won't come through for another five years, but I don't want to have to think about getting it done for that long. I want it over and done with now! XD

My mum said she never even noticed when hers came through because she had some back teeth out as a child, which in turn left her enough room for the Wisdoms to come through.

I caught up with two schoolmates last weekend and they both had braces in school. One had her wisdoms out and her teeth are still nice and straight. The other let her Wisdoms come through and her teeth are all crooked again. =/

Steve is getting all four of his wisdom teeth out at the beginning of May, so May is going to be a pretty painful month for us both.

I'll be sat on the internet for most of those 11 days, as I won't be able to talk at all I imagine. XD

Who here still has their Wisdom Teeth?

Did it hurt when they came through, or did you hardly notice them?

Who here has had them removed due to them destroying the work your braces did as a child? Or because they were causing you pain?

I actually still have my wisdom teeth at the ripe old age of 23. :monster:

A few of mine have actually impacted (the overly agressive-sounding word for "came out"), but they don't hurt so I'm just gonna leave them in. I'm hoping that they'll push my teeth back together and re-do the work my braces did in high school. :wacky:

I'm hoping I never have to get them taken out, particularly since the surgery isn't cheap here. Once they start hurting, though...those little bastards are coming right out.

I had mine removed, and they did mess up what my braces did, but in a minor fashion. I have to have one of my back molars removed because of it.

It doesn't sound like your wisdom teeth will be a problem, since they're just removing them a bit early. Mine were removed because they were impacted - they were pushing against my molars and threatened to push them out, so I had to have my wisdom teeth removed.

11 days is a bit much for your recovery time - you should be fully functional in about 5. I lost feeling in my tongue for 2 years after my operation, which was a little annoying more than anything. They severed a nerve when they took mine out [because of how impacted they were], so it caused that. You shouldn't have a problem at all with yours.

Come to think of it, I actually have quite the horror story to tell when it came to my operation. But, I don't want to scare you. Just make sure whoever is dong the anesthesia [as I hope you're not going to be awake for the operation!] knows what they're doing. That's all I have to say.

Also, some words of advice:
DO. NOT. DRINK. THROUGH. STRAWS.
Avoid any carbonated beverages, and avoid anything salty.

My Steve's teeth are so badly impacted that one of his molars was cracked in half and he's in terrible terrible pain right now. =(

The surgery here is about $2500 all together. $1500 for the surgeon, $700 for the anesthesist (which I can claim most back on) and $250 for the hospital bed. I thought it was going to be more expensive than that. Thankfully it isn't. =0

It's 7 days off actual work and then plus four days for the weekend. I'm not complaining. XD It means I get out of some of my yucky end of month paperwork at work as it starts on 27th May and goes through to 6th June. XD

They told me that sort of thing could possibly happen, but they had to inform me of all the risks. I just tried to forget them all so I wasn't freaking out on the day. XD

Oh tell me after. XD I really am such a paranoid person when it comes to this sort of thing and I know I just won't stop thinking about it up until the day. >.< XD

Oh and I am going to be asleep. >.<

And why can't I drink through straws? =0

Oh, I was just saying you won't need all 11 days to recover, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the extra days off. xD

As for straws, they'll rip your stitches right out. I had a straw in my drink and made the mistake of drinking through it - and had a mouth full of blood right after.

So, make sure, for at least a week, to avoid straws like the plague, unless you like the taste of copper. =/

I had mine out when I was either 18 or 20, I think, and it wasn't all that bad :hmmm: I think I had them out because they had been starting to hurt, but they anesthetized me for the procedure and I only had aching for about a week after, the same length of time I had to take off from work and school. The most annoying part was really trying to keep food out of the holes, and cleaning them out with the squirty tube thing. But it wasn't something that hurt very badly that I can remember, so I hope yours don't hurt too badly when you get them taken out Kandy  Oh and also, if they give you a pain-numbing medication, I don't know what kinds of things they offer where you live and how they might affect other people, but I took one Lortab for it and it was very disorienting, kind of like being drunk or something, so make sure you can just stay at home for the day if you have to take that kind of medication.

This thread reminds me of how lucky I am that I still have all of my wisdom teeth...which all came in perfectly straight and unpainfully :monster:

Almost everyone I've talked to has had theirs removed...and my dentist has asked me about it in the past saying it would be "better" but I told him if it isn't broke, I'm not going to fix it. We'll see later down the road how things go, but I'm sure if I've gone years and years with them with no problems things will continue to be fine.

I'm a complete Nazi about my teeth though and I brush at least 3 sometimes 4 times a day and I floss every night and rinse with a flouride rinse every night so I keep them very clean.
Good luck to you and Steve, Kandy. At least you've got each other to help heal out :monster:

I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago because the orthodontist believed they would reverse the work my braces did; I got them removed before they could do any damage. The surgery involved cutting into my gums to get them out, my mouth was quite sore for a few days but it was a relief to get it done.

I spent most of my time in bed/my room while I was recovering. Funnily enough it was during that time that I actually started dropping in to this forum regularly as I had pretty much nothing else to do.

Ah Hah! It all makes sense now, you were tripping balls on pain killers when you first came here! No but seriously, doctors say that my wisdom teeth will never come in. Though I do have other teeth deficiencies to make up for it which may involve surgery eventually. No cavities but alignment thanks to a gum "efficiency" too much in one spot.

Oh. XD Well that's awesome!

I really didn't want to be lying in bed all that time in pain. >.<

I wish I had a laptop for those first couple days, because I can't see myself wanting to leave my bed. XD

=0 I don't think I want to eat at all now. >.< I'm going to lose weight over this week, when I really don't need to! Hope I don't look too sickly afterwards. >.<

I'm starting to feel faint already. XD I have such a weak stomach. >.<

I know they've given me a prescription for something already but I can't remember what it is, and I hope it isn't in tablet form. Dunno how I'm going to swallow it properly. >.<

And thank you. I hope it isn't too painful too. >.<

I wish I could leave mine in, but they said it was inevitable. One day I would have to have them out and today is as good as any day I guess. XD I hope nothing goes wrong with Steve. I really don't want to have to rush to the hospital with him or anything. >.<

Yes this is my situation and I'm so scared of the whole cutting into my gums part. :gonk: It really doesn't sound pleasant at all. :gonk:

HAH! XD

I've still got mine in. They don't really bother me except for the one on the upper-right side of my mouth that came in crooked. I find myself constantly biting that part of my mouth. And because the mouth is such a funny thing, the area gets a little swollen and I continuously find myself biting it which only extends the amount of time it takes for the swelling to go down. :monster:

Oh, it's just hilarious. :hmph:

I've had 3 wisdom teeth extracted, all at different times. All of my wisdom teeth (including the one that's still there) were all exposed. Then when they had a cavity in them, they were extracted because it's a waste of money to fill it when you don't need the tooth to begin with. The 2 top ones healed quickly and I was only in pain for a few days. The bottom one, however, took a good 2 weeks to heal. The dentist told me that because the lower teeth are connected to move things (like the jaws and such) that it naturally takes longer to heal.

If the teeth are impacted, then they have to cut open the gums to pull them out. My father had an impacted wisdom tooth pulled a few years ago that managed to crack the adjacent molar, so that got pulled too. So that is sort of common for impacted wisdom teeth.

I've heard stories about people having all of their wisdom teeth pulled at once. You can't eat anything solid because every corner of your mouth is in pain. But the good news is, you won't have to worry about them ever again.

I had to get all four of my Wisdom Teeth removed due to the fact they would cause major damage/packing of my teeth if I didn't. My bottom two actually were growing towards the underside of my molars. It didn't really mess up the braces job that I had done. I had to get my braces removed early since they were actually causing damage to my teeth, due to the fact my enamel is very, very sensitive and weak. They literally stained my teeth. Mind you, I did everything right while I had braces. :/

I did notice them when they got removed. I had four stitches inside my mouth that bled and hurt like hell. :l I was pretty much out of commission for about a week, but it was during the summer so it wasn't a problem. I was super paranoid so had nothing to eat except mashed potatoes for a week.

I lost 25lbs. It was amazing. :monster: Went from 180 to 155. Then when I got the stitches out and could eat and drink regularly again I gained those 25lbs back really quickly, but at least I felt like a skinny white boy for a little bit. :sad3:

It was fun using the water squirter to clean out the holes in my mouth, though.

my wisdom teeth were teh bane of my life for the majority of last year. the first part i was in so much pain i was eating pain killers for fun, i took twice the recommended dose for twice the recommended time i was in that much pain and made myself ill :rage:

got one removedand that healed quite quickly, but fuck me it hurt like fuck for a few days after

the other one came out and that got infected - there was actually a peice of tooth left in there, i ended up bnack at the hospital twice and on a course of anibiotics after that one was removed and in agony for about a month

the top wisdom teeth have give me no issue whatsover, but that debacle lasted from like Feb to september of last year it was just pretty much constant niggling pain, to constant outright agony the entire time

dave can vouch for how bad it was ):

I had mine taken out at 16. They were growing in almost horizonally and it was becoming vary painful. Once they were out, it was a huge relief and I did not feel any pain after the surgery. My mouth bled constantly, but that was about it. I was off for school for three days.

I'll be honest, my baby wisdom teeth still haven't come out, not a single tooth! I don't know if that's normal or not, and I don't really care so Ehh. I hope they come out eventually, but I fear the pain that may come with it. I have no choice but to go through it, but I'm worried. But I'll be happy when I finally have all my adult teeth.
