OK, I am one of the ones still living in last generation. I am still rockin the PS2 because I just couldn't seem to find the money for a PS3 and I don't want any other console! I've owned a PS, PSX, PS2, and PS2 Slim along with my PSP and I don't plan on leaving Sony now! But the price is still a concern of mine. I'm looking specifically at the backwards compatible 80 GB MGS4 pack, but all in all, I want to know if paying the money was worth it in the end, or should I just bite the bullet and buy myself the MUCH cheaper Xbox 360?

YES! The PS3 is a fantastic console. That isn't completely my Sony fanboy side talking either, as I have played Xbox 360's as my friends all own them, so I have experienced the other side.
I must say the PS3 seems to offer better downloadable content and arcade games that are funner to play and prettier to look at as well.
It also has a lot of really interesting games to play that the 360 does not; Little Big Planet, Lair, MGS4 etc for starters.
It also makes good use of the motion sensors in a lot of the games, again such as Lair, and also in Little Big Planet with the fraggin awesome movements of Sackboy you can do with that combined with movign your arms and facial expressions etc...
I wasn't sure at first, but I was a Sony follower my whole life, so I stuck out and bought a PS3 last summer. I am SO glad I did. I enjoy it a LOT better than the 360, and to me the 360 feels a step back. Still a good console, but it feels, to me at least, a bit behind the mark.

I'm saying a definite yes, the online play is amazing and it's free, so that's a major plus to begin with. Plus, with the rest of the features it has, and the amazing titles that have just been released I would say go for it, for sure. 
Yes! You must buy a PS3. I thought I was gonna regret buying mine, because of all the bad things I heard about it but it's awesome! =]
The games are great, online is fun and earning Trophies, but I beleive XBOX360 has an achievement system or something. But with PS3 online you don't have to pay, its free!

If you can spare the money then i say why not however there are better things you could spend your cash on. On the plus there are some really great games out and future releases look good so yeah why not.

I've played my friends. It's a very enjoyable system. rumored to outlive the 360 also. I'm thinking of getting one as well, but i haven't made a solid dissicion yet. From what I've played and seen be played on it, I reccomend it.
Since you have PSX and PS2 games, i'm going to have to say buy it, because you can play your games on the PS3 too. Not sure if you can still buy it to go back to PSX unless you buy an 80GB Backwards Compatabilty PS3 from EBay or a used one anyways since i don't think they are made anymore.
Other then that reason, i'd say Xbox 360. Yes, online cost money, but it has such a better community online then the PS3 does. Also Xbox 360 has better games on it, so if your PS2 still works, then you can always just play your PS2 and PSX games on it. To top it off, Xbox is much cheaper. So i recommend to you the Xbox.

Overall I think the PS3 is a very good purchase. I've always been a Sony guy, but even though I switched over and have an Xbox 360 and NOT a PS3 right now, I'd say both are smart choices of systems. They both have many extra features that make gaming amazing on the consoles.
With the Blu-Ray capabilities on the PS3, if you're wanting to get one for a good price, go for it. Games are great; library's great. Definitely won't run out of games to play on the PS3.

Got mine on Friday, and love it already.
Only got Heavenly Sword at the moment, need to wait until pay day until I can get some more games, been downloading demos from PSN though.
Next step is a HD TV.
On topic, after a few days, I may not know much about it yet, but it's great so far, know I'm going get alot of use out of it.

I might be getting mine when Killzone 2 comes out.. but I might not.
The good thing about getting a PS3 is because you will be able to play PS2 games (and PS1 too?), you can still play your old Final Fantasy games.
You never know, the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII will have special features than the 360.

I'm not biased at all about this system, to be honest I thought it was great but I did have a lot of problems with it. The functionality was great, but the game qualities for this system were drastically different than that of PS1 and PS2.
I remember playing soooo many fun games for the two, but on PS3 I can only name a handful to be honest. I had PS3 and Xbox360 and although I originally intended PS3 to be my baby.. it was lacking in every way.
Cons:
1) Multiplayer - the environment does not have enough people plugged into it, and plus it seems quite a bit laggier than xbox live.
2) Game production - It was and still is a slug pace how fast they are developing and coming out with games.
3) Never I mean never buy a ps3 early for the sole purpose of FF13. I did it and certainly do regret it. I will buy it again when the release date is near.
Pros:
1) Handles games like a champ. I would love to see more high quality games come out that are well thought out.
2) Graphics + controls - Superior to all systems (biased because i love ps controllers) Graphics.. because they are.. compare the specs.
Conclusion: It's up to you, the system is amazing on many aspects but I left my ps3 in the dust for 4 months and had to sell it after the girl friend got a $125 dollar towing fee. Use your own discretion though.
