Rumour: Next Xbox won’t include disc drive, out 2013
The next Xbox will be rid of CDs, instead opting to have no disc drive in it at all, a report from MCV this morning is claiming.
The trade site has been told the information by a source under the “the strictest NDA” it has ever signed. It does say that it will offer “compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage”.
It isn’t confirmed if this’ll come as standard or a format similar to SD.
MCV’s also reporting a 2013 launch as we’ve predicted. On its announcement timing, it added it could still be announced at E3 in June, although that is “less clear” now.
On the actual story itself, Microsoft has refused to comment on it, but added in a statement:
“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”

Conflicting Xbox 720 physical media views
Whenever there’s a rumored device on the horizon there will be conflicting reports, so it stands to reason that we are getting two different accounts concerning the Xbox 720 to do with the games themselves. This has been the topic of conversation for sometime now because how we will be able to purchase games in the future will have a big impact on the industry.
The idea of the next Xbox not having a disc drive is not a new rumor but there seems to be some evidence that points to this actually being true, in an article here it discusses how they have been hearing whispers from Microsoft’s partners that the disc drive will be a thing of the past for their next-gen console.
As a way to compensate for this Microsoft could offer “some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage”, which could store games on the new Xbox? It comes as no surprise that there will be mixed views on this because while it does seem a good idea and will no doubt become a huge business, we can’t help wonder if the market is ready for the transition?
We know that things change and we need to enter a new era, but the industry needs to be ready for such a big change along with us as well, another thing we need to consider is the infrastructure of the Internet in certain countries, because they just don’t have the speeds to be able to download a 8GB game. If Microsoft still went down this route then this could affect next-gen Xbox sales because if their Internet speeds will not support all digital game downloads then consumers could be forced to stick with the current generation or switch sides.
Some gamers will now be sitting back reflecting on this rumor and believe it to be a complete load of nonsense and one of those reasons is the price it would cost to use a Solid State Drive, because while prices have fallen they are still pretty expensive. The cheaper option would be to stick with a physical disc for now, but make it Blu-ray instead.
To think that Microsoft would leave out Blu-ray this time round would be silly because it’s the preferred physical media and is the ideal step for Microsoft before the market is ready for fully digital game downloads. There have been a few gamers saying that no disc drive would mean no backwards compatibility because they would not be able to insert their previously bought game from the 360 into the next Xbox without a disc tray, but surely Microsoft would allow you to re-download them online?
To end, while some of the world is ready for a fully digital console most is not because of Internet speeds, it seems our service providers need to step up their game if we are about to enter a future that is even more reliant on digital downloads.
