Rumour: Next Xbox won’t include disc drive, out 2013

The next Xbox will be rid of CDs, instead opting to have no disc drive in it at all, a report from MCV this morning is claiming.
xbox-720.jpg

The trade site has been told the information by a source under the “the strictest NDA” it has ever signed. It does say that it will offer “compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage”.
It isn’t confirmed if this’ll come as standard or a format similar to SD.
MCV’s also reporting a 2013 launch as we’ve predicted. On its announcement timing, it added it could still be announced at E3 in June, although that is “less clear” now.
On the actual story itself, Microsoft has refused to comment on it, but added in a statement:
“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”

Whenever there’s a rumored device on the horizon there will be conflicting reports, so it stands to reason that we are getting two different accounts concerning the Xbox 720 to do with the games themselves. This has been the topic of conversation for sometime now because how we will be able to purchase games in the future will have a big impact on the industry.
The idea of the next Xbox not having a disc drive is not a new rumor but there seems to be some evidence that points to this actually being true, in an article here it discusses how they have been hearing whispers from Microsoft’s partners that the disc drive will be a thing of the past for their next-gen console.
Conflicting-Xbox-720-physical-media-views.jpg

As a way to compensate for this Microsoft could offer “some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage”, which could store games on the new Xbox? It comes as no surprise that there will be mixed views on this because while it does seem a good idea and will no doubt become a huge business, we can’t help wonder if the market is ready for the transition?
We know that things change and we need to enter a new era, but the industry needs to be ready for such a big change along with us as well, another thing we need to consider is the infrastructure of the Internet in certain countries, because they just don’t have the speeds to be able to download a 8GB game. If Microsoft still went down this route then this could affect next-gen Xbox sales because if their Internet speeds will not support all digital game downloads then consumers could be forced to stick with the current generation or switch sides.
Some gamers will now be sitting back reflecting on this rumor and believe it to be a complete load of nonsense and one of those reasons is the price it would cost to use a Solid State Drive, because while prices have fallen they are still pretty expensive. The cheaper option would be to stick with a physical disc for now, but make it Blu-ray instead.
To think that Microsoft would leave out Blu-ray this time round would be silly because it’s the preferred physical media and is the ideal step for Microsoft before the market is ready for fully digital game downloads. There have been a few gamers saying that no disc drive would mean no backwards compatibility because they would not be able to insert their previously bought game from the 360 into the next Xbox without a disc tray, but surely Microsoft would allow you to re-download them online?
To end, while some of the world is ready for a fully digital console most is not because of Internet speeds, it seems our service providers need to step up their game if we are about to enter a future that is even more reliant on digital downloads.

I'll be buying the next Xbox thats for sure but I'll also be buying the next Playstation but only for certain exclusive titles.

In my opinion the PS3 is terrible and this is coming from a former hardcore PS fanboy. You may have to pay for Live but its just £40 a year and its far superior than the PSN.

Well, you can Video Game Accessoires ALWAYS expect any new console to be overpriced.

And here's a bit of a interesting bit about Sony.

The PS2 was starting priced at 300$, the PS3 was starting priced at 600$. See the pattern there?

If at all, the technology used in such future consoles will be none like xbox 360 accessories other, so either the base price wii controller will be 900 or 1200. Rofl.

TBH Dennis, I'm keeping my PS3 for a LONG time, even if the PS4 will be out in a few years.

[h=1]Will there be a new Xbox 720 since the Xbox 360 has a five year lifespan?[/h]

Havent heard about the WiiU in ages :hmmm:

Anyways update about the Xbox, once again just a rumour. I skipped a lot of rumours/updates since my last post.

Rumor: Internet Explorer coming to Xbox 360
Complete with Kinect gestures and voice control.

Microsoft is bringing Internet Explorer to Xbox 360. According to The Verge sources, the new browser will allow Xbox 360 owners to browse the net straight from their console using either a controller or Kinect gestures and voice control.

Bing, which is already integrated into the dashboard, will be updated to search the web, as well. Currently, the search engine supports only Xbox LIVE Marketplace content.

With Microsoft’s E3 showcase said to be heavily focused on services, we’ll probably see this at E3 next month.

On Tuesday, The Verge sources also hinted at Kinect Play Fit, a new workout tracking application, and last month at Woodstock, a new music service for the platform. It is likely we’ll see these both at E3, as well.

The site’s Microsoft sources have proven correct just this week when they successfully reported on the new $99 Xbox 360 days before its announcement.

[h=1]Report – Sony and Microsoft considered, rejected download-only console option for next-gen[/h]Sony had considered making PS4 a download-only console at one point, but according to sources “familiar with the matter,” the firm decided to go with the tried and true “optical disk drive” model, according to The Wall Street Journal.
digital-world.jpg

The source said Sony decided against a download-only console due to the inconsistency of Internet connectivity across the globe, where the sheer size of game files in some parts would cripple a customer’s ability to download available titles.
Sony plans to release its new console next year, said the source.
According to the source, Microsoft opted for an optical drive in the next Xbox console for the same reason.
A spokesperson for both Sony and Microsoft declined to comment on the rumor to WSJ.

[h=1]Xbox is becoming Microsoft’s “premium entertainment brand”[/h]Microsoft marketing boss Yusuf Mehdi has said Xbox Live is leaving hardware behind to become a major force in Microsoft’s broader strategy.
20120607xbox.jpg

Speaking to MCV Pacific, Mehdi agreed that Xbox – the brand, not just Xbox LIve – has grown from a product to a service.
“Xbox is becoming our premium entertainment service brand for Microsoft, and it includes hardware and software experiences,” he said.
“It runs on the console and the TV and it runs on tablets and it runs on your phone. It’ll run on Windows 8.
“We’re bringing it everywhere, so you’re right to think of it as more of a service in which things come with it, as opposed to ‘I’ve just bought a box, now I need to go buy other things to do with it.’”
During E3, Mehdi announced a major expansion to Xbox Live’s entertainment services.

[h=1]Microsoft talks “entertainment” future of Xbox, drops E3 hints[/h]We’re all for swooping in to save the day at the last second, by this is getting ridiculous. After a strong 2010, Microsoft’s been eerily silent about what’s next for its old-but-not-over-the-hill box. Or at least, that’s been the case as far as games go. But the whole “videogame console” thing is only half the battle, and Microsoft’s now got a much larger target in its sights: “entertainment.”

“The vision for Xbox is straightforward: All of the entertainment you want. With the people you care about. Made easy. That is why you’ve seen us invest in partnerships with ESPN, Netflix and Hulu. That is why we’ve baked social directly into the experience with Xbox LIVE – connecting gamers, friends and families across the globe. That is why you’ll see Xbox marketed more as an entertainment brand this year,” corporate communications VP Frank Shaw wrote in a blog post about Microsoft’s vision for Xbox’s future.
He also revealed that 40 percent of all Xbox use is now dedicated to non-game-related past-times. So, what’s the next step? “More,” Shaw said. “More options, more games, more videos, more entertainment.”
Which is all well and good, but what about, you know, videogames? Those little doohickeys we messed around with before the advent of cutting-edge trends like non-interactive film? Don’t worry. Microsoft hasn’t forgotten. Its memories are probably just a little different than yours, is all.
“Today, there is no better gaming experience in the world,” Shaw began. “Immersive games, sports games, games where you are the controller, games where you talk to your friends, games where you talk to the console, games that get you into shape, that make you laugh, that let you take a picture and share it with friends. Games that extend to your Windows 7 PC and your Windows Phone 7…and, of course, other devices to come…”
Other devices to come? Let us now all join in a collective “Hmmmmmm.” You may also want to grow a beard or two and stroke them. For now, though, vague hints are all we’ve got, as Shaw then closed out with this little number:
“Next Monday at E3 in Los Angeles, the Xbox home entertainment pot will be boiling over during a 90-minute event… We’re continuing to deliver mind-blowing gaming experiences, and we are turning up the heat on a whole new era of home entertainment.”
So then, you should probably pay attention to that. In the meantime, you could sniff around the rest of Shaw’s post for clues – if only to lose yourself in a very elaborate frog metaphor that we wish this site was better equipped to cover. But alas, “Microsoft proves frogs can be art” is just outside our coverage zone. Sad day.

I will definitely buy the next Xbox, and Playstation . But I will use the new Xbox much more as I use it to play all my multiplayer games with all my friends. Playstation however is just going to be my exclusives that Xbox doesn't have system. Xbox live is superior to PSN in every way, and with all these new services at our disposal it is gaining more value for our money.

I'll probably buy the Wii U first. I don't own a Wii so I think it's about time I get one, or the next generation console. Then eventually when the price comes down I'll buy the PS4.

tbh, I don't think that twe won't see the next generation of consoles for at least another 3 years '2015' as both companies have said that they want 10 years out of their system, and the graphics are still being improved on even now, Wii U is not a next gen console sorry to say, it a current gen one xD

Oh ok, I was under the impression that Wii U was next gen. Well, I'm likely to get that when it comes out. Then when PS4 comes out (2015 sounds about right), I'll probably wait a year or two. So it looks like I'll be sticking with my PS3 till about 2017 XD

they are saying it next gen for nintendo but graphic wise it current gen xD alot of people are even saying it still slightly weaker than xbox 360/ps3 :) and yeah, I would say next gen won't be til at least 2015 (for xbox) and 2016 for PS3

Sony stated they are already making next gen games lol not sure what to believe, but many sony exclusives and multiplatform games are releasing in 2013. I get the feeling 2014 is when ps4 will be announced or even releases.

Well tonight at 11pm GM time Sony will anounce the future of Sony. Ppl speculating they will announce PS4 but im not holding my breath. If they do announce the ps4 it will be amazing. Microsoft will follow soon.
A lot of rumours were floating on the net about specs etc. Interesting shit about orbis and durango both.

Nintendo will announce a lot too this year for the WiiU. Stay tuned.

I'm sticking with Xbox from now on. So I guess I'll be getting an Xbox 720 somewhere down the line. Obviously that won't be anytime soon. It will cost way too much for us to get. Unless I decide to waste my Christmas opportunity on it one year. Ehh... who knows? I know that I'll be sticking with my Xbox 360 for a long while.

I just got my PS3 last August, so obviously I'm just now really getting settled in! Yeah, I knew from the get-go that I was buying a console way late into its lifespan, but that doesn't change the fact that it still has a pretty great library of games. The thing is though, we've got basically a year before the PS4 is even released, and after that it will be a few years before no more PS3 games are being made. PS2 games sure kept on getting produced well into the PS3's lifespan, and heck, SE still wants to release an addon to FFXI for the PS2 this coming March! Granted the PS2 was a much more popular console than the PS3, but the point is that I don't think PS3 support is going to drop off right away and I'll be able to stick with it for quite some time yet.

PS4 graphics sure do look pretty, though. I'll probably upgrade a year before PS5 is announced :P

Neither. It is safe to say that I have bought my last console :)

I started out as a console gamer because of the convenience it offered at the time compared to PC gaming, but consoles seem to become more complicated and convoluted with every generation. With this current generation of consoles, it finally reached the point advantages of console gaming no longer outweighed the disadvantages. Also because PC gaming has moved in the other direction and is much more accessible now than it was just 5 years ago, let alone 15 years ago when I bought my first Playstation!

So no, I will stick with my PC, and maybe in a couple of years upgrade it with a new processor and a new graphics card :)

Oh lol I should have added the pc in the equation, but its not a console. If consoles cease to exist I would stop playing games altogether. I will never buy a pc for games and If I really need a pc I would buy a laptop or a cheap pc. Laptops are so bad my sisters laptop always shuts down because it overheats too soon. Battery has turn to shit too.

I love pc for downloading shit etc. and social media I do on my mobile phone. Some people make music with pc or photoshop etc., but for games pff... Not for me.

Waiting for Xbox news cause maybe the new xbox could be awesome if they ditch the goldmember shit.

Ohri, bro, sounds like your sister needs to take better care of her laptop. Clean the vents and stop using it on a soft surface, if it's had work done someone could've jumbled the insides to block flow and create a cluster of heat which is killing it. PCs are a platform for gaming, and consoles are custom PCs, so don't be so quick to dismiss them. Consoles draw their tech from PCs, and are usually three or four generations behind. The only reason consoles have the life they do is because the hardware is leveraged.

Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3, but Sony is doing a fabulous job of pissing me off. No purchases carry over? No BC except through that streaming shit, which is a failed tech? That's been done already, and it's laggy/not worth playing. I may get a PS4, but it will be a damn long time before I do. Sony is doing to consoles what EA and Gamespy has done to games.

Another question is, why not include the Steam box? It is my first choice for a "next gen" console because it's creators are the only company making worth while business practices.

tl:dr - Don't discount PCs, they are the prelude to all console technology. Sony is fucking up. I'm too cheap to pay for XBL. Steam box and PC are my choices for the future.
