I searched for a thread similar to this, but alas. Nothing. Again, if one does exist, feel free to delete/merge this one.

Anywho. We've all met people like this. Those close minded, smug, little jack offs who seem to think that their preferences and tastes are among the best. They believe because they like something, it must be good because they like it. And whenever anyone disagrees with them or tells them that they don't like the same thing, these assholes feel the need to insult that person. I see this alot. Mostly on the internet (seeing as how that's where I spend most of my free time :sad3: ) and it bothers me. Watching people get insulted because they don't like Tool or Nine Inch Nails or some pretentious band like that. One time on a site, I made the statement that I personally didn't think Jaws was a good movie and gave my reasons why I thought that way. HOLY SHIT!!! Did I get attacked. I got called a movie snob and was told I have "no taste". I thought the point of preference and opinion was to have your own. I've always been under the impression that if you like or dislike something and have atleast decent reasons as to why, then that should be relatively okay. Nope. Apparently not. My mistake.

As it's certainly no surprise to anyone who's read my posts, I'm a huge, borderline obsessive Metal Gear Solid fan. You could call me a fan boy and though I don't personally liked to be called that, I wouldn't be able to deny it. But I've known who people who don't like the series. I've known people who hate the series and they give their reasons why. Do I think any less of them? No. They have their preferences. And I'm not going to insult them for it.

And I'm gonna say this because I know someone's probably gonna throw it in my face that I've been known to "make fun" of people who like Sephiroth. I'm gonna make the statement that I'm poking minor fun. I don't actually hate, or even dislike people who like Sephiroth or Final Fantasy VII. I just personally hate Sephiroth and Final Fantasy VII and I think the overflow of threads is a little overboard, though to be fair it is a section for threads about that specific game so I really have no room to bitch and I apologize to anyone with a username that has Sephiroth in it that might have taken my comments seriously.

Anyway, blah....

i think all of us can be like that at times. just look around these forums, doesn't take long to find people in disagreement and bashing each other for their opinions :)

you could say this attitude is a major contributor to human conflict in general.

pretentious band like that
Aw c'mon, this is exactly what you're complaining about. It's no different from someone saying "Metal Gear Solid is fucking stupid."

I think that media can be judged objectively, at least to an extent. Even if you dislike it, there's objectively good/skillful/well-done elements to Citizen Kane, for instance. But quality and enjoyment of something aren't really related. Metal Gear Solid is incredibly campy and takes itself seriously. It has tons of flaws. But despite how crappy it is in places, I love the series too.

What I'm getting at is that many people can't divorce quality from the ability to like something. We are judged by others based on what we consume and enjoy, just like if someone dressed with a different fashion (or no fashion sense at all). And some individuals think that the quality of what they like means they have high quality as well, whereas others don't if they don't like quality things. So yeah. The objective and subjective qualities aren't always related in someone's judgment of it.

Well, no, it is, though. I worry that you really might be falling for the hype of a sub-par game with a decent story. In fact, I'm not even sure if I'd say decent story.

But it can't. Nothing is good, objectively. We can say something is good, objectively, WITHIN A SUBJECTIVE SYSTEM, but without that, nothing means anything.

Look, everything I like is better than everything that you like. It's time everyone else grows up and accepts this fact. I am vastly superior to all other humans. I am the Superhuman.

Actually, no. It's not the same thing. Not even kinda. I was saying that Tool and Nine Inch Nails are pretentious because they are in my eyes. Entirely unimportant to the point of the thread, true. But it's just a little something I threw in simply because I don't like those bands. The entire point of my posts is about judging and insulting people based on their opinions and preferences. Was I saying that people who listen to those bands are pretentious? Yeah, I'm gonna go with "no". And I would know seeing as how I'm the one who fucking wrote it. :dave:

And a perfect example is the guy who posted below you. He made a negative statement about MGS. Do I care? Not really. Do I think less of him? Again, no.

Honestly, I think it's more along the lines of this: I do subject people to certain prejudice based off their musical preferences sometimes.

Meaning I disagree with what they like. I never think one has to actually love everything I do, even if it would make sense (I kid). It's just I question people's reasoning for liking certain things. Sometimes music has certain beats that are typically trendy.. it might sound boppy or something and I admit as a kid of 6,7,8,9 I probably enjoyed some of the stuff that some people today are ashamed of enjoying. Though as I progressed in life, I tended to become more intrinsically deep with the way music was done. I started seeing music as a more creative aspect, and the more difficult it was to play or the more lyrical depth that was put into the music, I identified with it more.

These days I enjoy heavily percussion music because of how difficult being a GOOD drummer is. Most people seeing someone as beating on something as not very hard to do.. but drumming is a lot harder than it looks. In fact I doubt I have the rhythm to do what Danny Carry, Neil Peart, Carter Beauford, or Joey Jordison can do with two sticks and their legs. It's amazing.

A good bass player like Les Claypool or an amazing guitarist like Jimmy Paige or Warren Haynes, can always make me stand still.

Though when someone likes some of the stuff out today, with all the boppy or American Idol or all the overly regurgitated tones backed by even more crappy vocals with even crappier lyrics, I sit there and say to myself, what happened?! Radio? Unquestionable, turn it off. What's the use of hearing maybe 1 good song in a day, due to the new folks have to have their air time to make the economy go round.

So as you can see, when someone likes a piece of crappy musical, I question them as a being sometimes. I let it go, but seriously, it's just one of those things with what you identify with.

I think people that complain about people complaining are stupid.

So feel free to complain about me complaining about you complaining about people.

Thank you for helping us help you help us all.

But seriously, I can find three or four instances in your post that are exactly what you're complaining about. And you even go as far as to say you make fun of people who like Sephiroth? That's EXACTLY what you're complaining about. People poking fun and begrudging you for liking what you do.

In all honesty, I've called people idiots for not agreeing with me before. I'm sure we all have, whether we'll admit it or not. I get attacked by people for liking Ke$ha, not liking this, liking that so much that I try not to let it bother me, but at some point I become super defensive and go on the offensive myself.

I don't think that it's fair to judge me because I listen to Ke$ha or don't like the same things you do. That doesn't make me an idiot, it makes me different than you. None of us are perfect, and I'm sure we all like at least one or two stupid things. However, most of us will hide, because we don't want the world to know or shame. Or we overcompensate by attacking other people's likes and calling them dumb for not being ashamed of liking whatever stupid thing they do.

I don't know if that even made sense.

It's a natural thing to do, and I'm sure all of us have had these types of thoughts now and then, especially when we were younger. But as you get older, you tend to realize that most subjects can be viewed from different perspectives, and all with quite sustainable justifications in support. And so you become more accommodating of others' opinions seeing that most subjects aren't inert and always malleable pending on how it's understood.

But I've seen this kind of knowledge and experience (the type you gain with age) backfire quite a bit. Sometimes when people learn more and more, they get more confined to a certain viewpoint with unwavering confidence. And when you have two people like this holding opposing viewpoints meet for the first time, there's going to be tension. :/

So I guess knowledge cuts both ways. I was afflicted with this myopic disease for a while, but I'm just glad that I've started to lean into the former category.

It is what it is though, you can't really change people from thinking a certain way. You can point to your understanding of the subject, but in the end it's always up to the other person to commit to something. And most of the time it's a decision you can respect (even if it's against your own). At least that's how I usually try view things.

Oh man, I hate people like this too! In my many years of being around (stressing the many part :hmph:), I've had to deal with many people like this. Once a conversation about opinion comes to this, I just leave it or I'll start a new topic. Just because we don't agree, doesn't make me an idiot, even if what I think is far-fetched. Discussion about sports and politics seems to come to this more frequently. Seeing as how politics isn't really an interesting topic to me, it tends to not happen much with that, mainly because it doesn't get discussed as much. Sports, however... :hmph: But I honestly chalk that up to being a good fan, so I can't really fault people for that. I've been guilty of this as well when it's come to sports. :lew:

When it comes to general opinion, it's just uncalled for, in my opinion.

Well, these sort of people seem to be everywhere.

Even I myself am guilty of this sometimes - disgustingly so :hmph:

Fortunately though, I think as you grow up, you start to have less and less of such silly opinions. It seems to me as you get older, and become more aware of the world, you start to realize the notion of 'opinions', and actually realize that not everyone thinks the same way as you do.

For me here, it was apparently 'cool' to think the same way as the 'cool' kid around.

:mark:

Over time, one's tastes tend to become more experienced or in tune. So they will like different things, or know what is better. I like to think that most experienced people would actually choose some of the same things.

So, I think that feeling like you are right, if you actually are, is okay. If we're talking about anything else, it tends to get labeled differently, which eliminates the problem anyway.
