I heard that if you pick up a knot of rust then you cant get it.

I dont think it would be that easy... lol. Plus you can pick up lots of knots of rust. Only way you can get zodiak spear is by not opening the spear related urns as far as I know

Yeah its if you open certain runes that you cant get it. Thank god for guides and maps!

haha i reckon! seriously, i opened the urn in lowtown and then when i was stuck with something, i consulted the guide when I noticed it said not to open one of the urns... lucky I had another save profile not too far from where I was...
I was paranoid about opening some urns but its all good now that I know where they are...

Same here, I opened that urn and had just saved, so I restarted! You do get paranoid and triple check just to make sure, its a bitch.

I'd start again... cant play through a game knowing I cant get something thats awesome.... but Zodiac spear isnt crucial
Did that with FFX... got 90 hours into the game when I realised I couldnt geet the optional aeons so I started again and it felt satisfying being able to get them

I don't like it in games when you can miss things at certain points. Id prefer it if things like espers and weapons were hard to get, but available to get throughout the whole game.
Espers are always available throughout the game, the Zodiac Spear is still available even if you opened the chests but I think its a lot harder. I havent tried it but I've heard people say that it can drop in the henne mines (I'd suspect the area where you have to pass through to get to Zodiark).
There are four chest throughout the game here are locations:
1.)The chest in front of Old Delyns house in Lowtown Rabenastre
2.)In the Royal Palace of Rabenastre DONT open ANY of the chests in the cellars!
3.)In the Nalbina Dungeons dont opwn any of the chests in the Confiscatory (with the save point )
4.)In Phon Coast on the Vaddu Strand section there are 16 chests DONT take ANY of them!
If you DONT TAKE ANY of the above then twards the end of the game go to the Necrols of Naubudis located on the West exit of the Feywood, it is in the center
BEWARE in the Necrols of Naubodis that all the enemies are very hard and this is one of the few places that a hunt will show up WITHOUT ACCEPTING so be VERY CAREFUL.

This was a really stupid idea. There are 4 different chests you absolutely can't open if you want to get the spear. And they're completely random! Were it not for guides and maps, it would be almost completely impossible to get this spear, since the chests are all in fairly ordinary and visible places.
Found this on another website, I think it covers everything you need to know about getting the spear if you got some of the wrong chests throughout the game.

There is a 10% chance the chest appears, there is a 10% chance the object in the chest is an item and not gil, and finally there is a 10% chance that the item is the zodiac spear.

However, there is an apparent way to increase the odds to just 1/100 of a chance.
I once read that the very very first time you pass through the area in the mine where this chest appears, the chest is always present. If you leave the area and return at a later time, the chest now has a 10% chance of appearing.
So if its your first time through, you can supposedly run to the chest and open it. If its not the spear, reload and try again. Now that the chest is always there, your odds are 1/100 which is much more doable, but still very low.
If you need to know where the chest is, from the gate crystal, go one screen north and one screen east. Continue going as far east as possible. Just before the eastern most point, there is a passage going south. Take it. As you keep going south, the area will change from caves to hallways and stairs, and after you pass the hallway, you are back in a cave area. As soon as you are back in the cave area, look to your right as you move forward. The first alcove on your right that you encounter that doesn't show up on the mini-map is the section that contains the chest with the zodiac spear.
Of all the times I passed through this area, (I didn't know about the chest and the odds until after I visited this section I passed through), and I passed many times, this chest appeared only once. Needless to say, I got no spear.
One final note. If you have obtained a spear the easier way, by not opening the 4 chests, etc, the Henne Mines chest will supposedly never yeild a spear."

Okay.. very very easy to obtain. I have a detailed strategy on how to avoid fighting all the monsters in the Necrohol of Nabudis. If you HAVE opened up the chests that you werent supposed to open then forget the spear... theres still 2 other weapons in the game that are just as good. LVL 99 with omega beaten and Zodiark obtained. The spear can be obtained at even lvl 20 if you have the right spells

well this definetly sucks for me because i can't get them because by the time i got to use the computer i already opend the ones at the castle and at lowtown i don't like starting a new game when i haven't finished it yet (yes i haven't finished it since i got too many games too finish) but can someone give me the stats of the spear like how much power and such?
