Yes, they do bite but you have to purposefully incite them to do so. That is, one would have to catch one, pick it up, tap their mouth until they open it and then place the lizard where you want to be bitten. They have no teeth and very weak jaw muscles so it doesn't hurt at all. When I was young, some boys would do that and wear them off their ears (biting their ears) because it doesn't hurt. Also, for the most part as long as you avoid the woods and ditches, the worse you're likely to encounter are garden snakes (AKA legless lizards) which are completely harmless.
Also, Jacksonville hasn't been directly hit by a hurricane in over 30 years. Florida has a current off the eastern coast which deters and weakens hurricanes. Northern Florida is actually much better off with hurricanes than Georgia etc. but we are famous because we often get the outskirts of hurricanes/tropical storms. Not to mention they make landfall near us not long after formation and thus are weaker. They would need to travel for considerably longer to really be able to impact us much.
