I heard that FFXIII will PROBABLY be the last installment, but that Square is making another game series that is similar to Final Fantasy...just with a different name and all. Blah, but it was just a rumor...what do I know? Haha.

It'd be kinda dumb if they do resort to that though. I say, carry on with the FF series. Let's see how far Final Fantasy would go 20 or 30 years from now. XD

"Final Fantasy XL" Woot!

Well you can't have Final Fantasy going up to 30s and such or else the name just kind of loses the appeal to people who may have never played or are resentful of the title. A name change can serve to bring in more players and broaden the audience, even if it is just a shallow change. I personally like the name Final Fantasy, cuz the story behind the title is kind of inspiring. But if they do make a name change, I only mind if they change the type of game, because I love the way Final Fantasies are

everything has to end and so will final fantasy but since its such a big hit they start a new seriers exactly like final fantasy which is fine since every final fantasy is different it wont make a difference and square enix cant survive with out final fantasy i would like that instead of ending the game

Well I agree on you on that one. If they ARE going to end Final Fantasy, which I'm sure they will in the near future...they wouldn't end it with a title like, "Final Fantasy XX" or something like that. They'll more likely create a new series similar to Final Fantasy, whole package included. (Awesome graphics, good storyline, unforgettable characters, etc.) Knowing Square Enix, I'm sure they can pull it off.

i have to second this, myself i didn't like the first FF's, i usually quit before it even started, making me miss 4-5-6-7-8 and 9, eventually i decided trying again at number 10 and 10-2, and now i really regret it

a name change, but staying at the same style would appeal people, also, if you start naming your games 1-2-3-4.... it gives a feeling you have to have played all the games before a you can actually understand a game in the later parts, same as i thought about X but i bought it anyway, and i understanded it perfectly...
the titles are a bit misleading on that area, a new game, with similar stories, the summons too, combat systems and all, would be a smart move imo

The series has to end sometime. If it does i hope the last one they make leaves its mark as the best one in the series. Square-enix better have something good to replace it.

thats the problem sqaure enix can never replace final fantasy so it cant end it but has to end sqaure enix is stuck in a tight spot

How about...if they stop calling it Final Fantasy, I'll stop buying it. lol.

Changing the title seems pointless to me, unless they're going to completely change the game and how it's played. And it doesn't really make much sense to me to suddenly change how the game is played now, because the way the game is played is already changing. I'd say that gives them, at the very least, a few new installments of the series to play around with, using the new style of gameplay. I don't think "Final Fantasy XX", for example, would be a problem either, in terms of the high number. The first Final Fantasy I ever bought was Final Fantasy X. I knew next to nothing about it, but the appeal was, in fact, the X. To me, any video game series that has so many installments has been successful, and successful for a reason. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

That's a very logical way of thinking. I never really thought about it this way, and to be honest, it does make sense. However, I don't think I can take it if they change the gameplay if they do decide to make a new series similar to FF. I know I'm exaggerating, but whatever. :P I'm sure people wouldn't want the game or even the name itself to become obsolete. I really do hope SE think of something good in the near future. =/

Oh, I agree entirely. That's my point. They either change the name and keep the gameplay the same, which is pointless, or they change the name and change the gameplay, which amounts to the death of Final Fantasy as a game, not just as a title. If they change the name, then any problems they currently have are still going to exist, and in fact, they'll probably create more for themselves. People who don't know Final Fantasy will still have their apprehensions, and people who do like it will want to know what's different about it, because to most people, a different title means a different game. Someone said earlier that keeping the name "Final Fantasy" will keep those resentful of the title put-off. Well, those are the people who, just as likely, won't buy the same game with a different title either, because they're ignorant. You can't judge a game by it's title. And for people who know it's just Final Fantasy with a different name, they'd have bought it even it was still called Final Fantasy anyway.

As with most things in life, time will tell. We can speculate, but that's all it is...speculation. The best way to find out what's going to happen? Wait for it to happen.

well changing the title alone is pointless they have to change the gamplay as well but if they do that the game wont ff if they change the game to much it wont remain final fantasy and all the changes might turn out to be failures

I agree. If you change the title and nothing else, then if anything, you're most likely going to lose sales, because in all likelihood, only fans of the series would realise it's the same game under a different name. And not all fans might be aware, so those fans will just assume they stopped making the game. And yes, if they change the game too much, like I said earlier, it'll be the death of Final Fantasy, not just as a title, but as a game. Right now, Final Fantasy is successful. Until there's any sign of that changing, all Square Enix need to do is worry about keeping the stories interesting, and perhaps keeping game play fresh. If they do that, there shouldn't be any need to change the name. I talk too much...
