Article: FFVII Remake Confirmed (Coming first to PS4, more to come in winter)

Its really weird that FFVII finally got its remake, its probably gonna be the best or the worst, Imma keep my fingers crossed though.

So, is it going to be on Xbox-one? Has there been any word of that? I hope not, I mean I think Square Enix must be hurting if they have finally remade FFVII, so likely, it will be on all platforms, wouldn't be surprised, but it'd be nice if it remained a PlayStation Classic, maybe that's just me though. I also hope that the visuals in game remain somewhat similar to what we see in the trailer.

I randomly stumbled onto the trailer on Youtube just a few minutes ago and thought it was some fan-made video using Advent Children scenes. Boy, was I taken by surprise!

I'm taking this remake as a, "We are now finally admitting that we're struggling," type of decision/put out. I can't help but think of how bad they are doing to have made this decision. Didn't they say they would only remake it when they feel they have created another great FF or something? They haven't, and with this new disappointment of taking Stella out of FF15...of a story we thought was going to be the story to now something we don't really know and feel awkward about...I don't know. I don't know about this remake. Plus, what's with all the remakes? I didn't even hear about FF10's HD being made for the PS4 and felt so weird about it when I saw it at the store. And all they did was add a calendar to it to spruce it up from the PS3 release? Weird.

I am HAPPY. I am REALLY HAPPY. Because now I have something to look forward to. Something HUGE and HAPPY to look forward to. FF7 was my first FF, and I will always love that game for the life of me, but my initial instinct when I read the comments of the trailer and realized this was real was, "I'm nervous." If they are doing bad and this is them telling us so, I am nervous because then that means this might turn out bad. And everyone, everyone who is a fan of FF7 who has wished and wanted and dreamed of this day, of course never wanted it to happen only to be given something bad. With that voice in the trailer, I was cringing already.

We'll see what happens. But I'm trying to imagine our touchy, teary, heart-torn moments with this game in HD in the hands of people who aren't doing very well, and I can't see it touching me. But we'll see. It's funny how FF7 was created at a time when they needed to be saved, and now they're doing it at a time when they need to be saved again, re-using it. It saved them back then; I wonder if it'll save them now. They surprised everyone back then with it and made a lot of people fall in love; I wonder if they will produce and get the same results.

And I feel awkward about the timing. I do NOT think this was the right time. We are/were waiting for FF15 and wanted to focus on that, as well as Kingdom Hearts and whatever else NEW they were making that we were waiting and watching to see, to see if they can still create great and amazing things and then all of a sudden they toss us the FF7 remake. UH...give it to us at a time when we're not already hyped and focused on new stuff and a time when you're not still not done with a game that was promised to us back when the PS3 first came out. It's like they're trying to distract us from FF15 all over again, like how people claim the government hides behind celebrity chaos in order to distract us from what they're doing cuz they know they're not doing good stuff or finishing well what they said they would finish. THIS is why I am nervous. SO nervous.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake, announced at Sony’s E3 press conference, could deviate from its source material.

When asked if the remake, in development for PlayStation 4, will follow the Final Fantasy VII narrative exactly or feature new elements, director Tetsuya Nomura gave GameSpot an ambiguous answer.

“We’ve announced an HD port version on the PlayStation 4, and then we have the remake coming to PS4,” Nomura said through a translator. “You’ll have this extremely, very, very pretty FFVII existing on the same plane. We feel that if that happens, it’s like, why have the same exact game?

“We think that if a game is on a certain platform and that platform becomes obsolete, then we’d recommend playing the new port version,” he added.

Currently, all we know about the Final Fantasy VII Remake is that it is now in production with key members of the original game’s staff on board, including producer Yoshinori Kitase and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima. Other developer details are unknown.

I feel like people are over-analyzing the trailer. This is nothing but a teaser, and I don't think anything shown here matters too much. The most you could get out of it is how Midgar might look now.

One of the things that I'm wary about is how they're going to handle the tone of the game. I'm sure they're going to make some changes to the dialogue and scenes, but I hope they don't make it too serious. There were some silly and funny parts in the original game, like Cloud crossdressing to sneak into Don Corneo's place. Don't you want to see Cloud take a group bath with half-naked muscle men in stunning HD? :wacky:
I will love if they take away all the anime-comedic relief qualities. Most of them were product of bad translating anyway, so as far as I consider it, certain things weren't canon. For example, Cloud's "Let's mosey" isn't translated correctly and it should have been "Everyone, let's go", in Japanese, Cloud's response is said to be very 'military' and not a joke.

The church it´s pretty obvious, and the helicopter....that could be a reference when the turks take Aerith/Aeris from the top of the Shinra building before the sector seven explosion if I remember well...and the soldiers could be just generic ones just to show the improvement in the uniforms...(we should get a new sequence when cloud goes undercover at Junon)
My thoughts exactly.

Actually the thing I'm wondering about most now is whether or not this game will have the traditional turn-based battle style or some kind of hybrid like we had in FFVII:CC or even FFXV.

I don't think the traditional turn-base line up will look all that great in the updated game. At the same time this battle style has been at the heart of Final Fantasy, and fans will probably be hoping for the creators to retain some of the essence of the original game. Thoughts?

I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with some sort of battle system that's pretty close to that of XIII. XIII's battle system did seem like some derivative of what ATB COULD'VE been like in a future generation- albeit, if said designers decided to put the battle system plans through a shredder.

While, of course, the original ATB has undeniable charm and such, having Cloud and co. lined up together in 3D could look odd and- with this intense new feel(Batman Begins, guys!!), I just don't see it fitting in!

Also, due to the very blatant REMAKE caption, I think we all expect some drastic and/or not so drastic changes for this new game. (I bet the Honeybee Inn section of the game will most definitely be changed, but that's just me).

This game hasn't been my E3 highlight. I've never been much of a fan of this game or its cast... but the novelty of Square Enix finally giving the majority of the people what they want(?) amuses me, so I definitely want it to succeed.

Answering both together.

I actually hope they make the battle system more advanced and interactive. I remember I fell asleep once (while LVL grinding) and all I did was push the same button over and over again and I was able to get through the fight without opening my eyes.

There's a lot of great aspects to FFVII, but it's battle system was not one of them. If that game were to be released now people would get bored in a few hours. So I hope they change it and make it far more interactive and fast-paced.

Emu, I appreciate the last part of your post. It's really refreshing to see non-FFVII fans be happy for us. People usually bash us.

Not just the Honey Inn but also the Don Corneo part and Cloud dressing as a girl. I can't imagine those scene in full PS4 graphics. I doubt Square Enix will delete those scenes.

Really? I think that scene is going to be altered drastically. My predictions;

A) Instead of Cloud being chosen, Aerith will go in and Cloud will hide in the mansion's vents and 'watch over her' to make sure she's safe.

B) Cloud's 'drag' will look very unbelievable in order for nobody to say that Cloud *actually* looks like a girl (believe it or not, that pisses Japanese fans off), this theory has weight to it because even in the original game NPCs at Don's INN all commented on how 'strong' Cloud's hands were and how masculine he looked.

C) They'll trash the entire scene and just make Cloud and Aerith bust in to save Tifa.

However, at the very least this remake should provide some really cool CGI scenes.
That is a major plus, even if the game has shit retcons, shit acting, shit-everything, if the CGI scenes are done for every scene, that'll almost make it worth it.

I’m also a bit concerned that they might be planning to ret-con the hell out of this game, but it seems that it is inevitable and they already are referencing other aspects of the FFVII Compilation.

A railway / tube station is named South Edge (though as others point out, this might be ‘the future’, and that’ll also explain why Aerith’s church and surrounding buildings are not underneath the Midgar plate).

The kids playing with Buster Swords… Obvious fan service, without regarding the plot. If it does end up in the actual game then perhaps they will include a scene where Cloud is confused by buster sword toys being common. Whilst not triggering his break-down and understanding of the identity mix-up too early in the game, seeds of early doubt may be planted here, or there might be a sort of dramatic irony to be picked out by the audience.

Said the same exact things, yo. I'm terrified that the retcons will be so out of hand that I'll just be cringing the entire time. I really don't want to see FFVII and Cloud's story be made into a Zack-fest. This is the only part of the compilation in which Cloud's story is completely delved into, not even Advent Children gave us insight into Cloud's character or story as well as the original game.

Like you, I hope they include a scene of Cloud getting confused as to why so many kids he doesn't know are idolizing his sword. Without it, it'll be stupid.

I’m not keen on that redesign of the Shinra soldiers. They look like they belong in Metal Gear or Call of Duty. For Final Fantasy that’s not a good thing. If these are Avalanche members Wedge and Biggs, then that is even worse, and that will not bode well for the tone of this game. FFVII will lose its charm and will become a generic action game.
Whaaaaa? For real? I loved how it looked.

To me, I always hated how the bad translation made so many comedic relief moments in the game. Yeah, there was some--but they were done because it was 1997 and they had to rely on a new and not-so-great translator. That sort of stuff is just dated now. I do hope they keep its quips and quirky charms... but a lot of the tongue-in-cheek stuff is due to Toriyama, and both Nojima and Kitase said he was REALLY out of hand with a lot of the 'comedic' scenes (Don's mansion, Cloud in drag) so hopefully the lack of him being on the Dev team means that most of those wacky scenes are trashed (Tifa's bitch-slap scene for example).

FFVII's plot is actually the darkest and more mature in the franchise (VII and VI) so I feel like it'll be what the game always was intended to be if they remove most of the tongue-in-cheek-comedic scenes.

And I feel like that's what they're gonna do after seeing the could-be-Soldiers/Wedge and Biggs new costume design.

Think about it, how else can they sell this game to older fans and new fans at the same time? The old content will put off a lot of newer fans, so they have to make it darker in some aspects. And the 'darker' feel to the story will make old fans want to buy it because it will be like playing something totally new, whether that's good or bad.

Plus, Square Enix's graphics team helped with Deus Ex and now they're probably thirsty to try more games with serious plots and character designs.

The feather landing in the puddle during the scene which clearly references Aerith… I don't see it as a reference to Genesis' or Sephiroth's wings
Same. Like I said earlier. I think the feather and the angel in the puddle's reflection symbolizes Aerith's death.

personally, since this one is red. Could this actually be a phoenix down? Might this be hinting at the possibility of reviving Aerith, or could it be a self-aware joke on the number of fans who have wished for such a thing and made up revival theories for the original game?

I didn't even think about that. :hal:

Watson, you genius! :watching:

That would be so amazing if at the end of the game, Aerith comes back. That would open up to a sequel and so much new story. :ohoho: Now that I think about the trailer's narration.... I think the red feather WAS supposed to symbolize Aerith's return, because right when it shows that scene the narrator says "That someday we would see them again." I instantly thought it was referencing how the planet told Cloud he could find Aerith or how Sephiroth kills Aerith, but now I'm thinking that red feather doesn't symbolize Sephiroth at all and really it symbolizes her revival. Especially since this is the dialog;

FFVII REMAKE NARRATION said:
Long ago, we looked upon a foreboding sky. The memory of a star that threatened all, burns eternal in our hearts. In its wake, came an age of silence. Yet with each fond remembrance we knew, those encountered were not forgotten. That someday we would see them again. Perhaps it was no more than wishful thinking. But after the long calm there are now the beginnings of a stir. The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back. At last the promise has been made.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS TO MY ATTENTION :reptar:

I can't find the interview, but I remember there was an interview that said Tidus' revival was 'testing the waters' for a possible Aerith revival. I do not have this interview anymore and I saw it back when I was 17 or so, so I can't say for sure if it was real. However, I can provide this;

FFX Scenario Ultimania
**FFVII and FFX are connected?!**

--"Previously, with a conversation in the FFX Scenario Ultimania, you made certain inferences, and since it's been about half a year since then, is there anything new you'd like to clarify about FFX?"

Kitase
"That's true...... Now that FFX International is out and we're in the future, I'm in a predicament; it really isn't that hard to think of another story <set> in that world; room for expansion was left possible there without too much difficulty, don't you think? Speaking conversely, FFX received a splendid reception and made us think of adding to it."

Nojima
"After FFVII was finished, we were easily able to add Zack's open<-ended role> into the International version. But, with X, there was an older story with a partly-finished world and an opening that this new one could be added to and <, in doing so,> complete it."

Kitase
"So, you could say <in terms of> time, Nojima-san decided to designate it to act as a sequel to VII, if you follow me."

--"It's a sequel to VII!!"

Kitase
"Well, there was a joke right there. Simply put, in VII's ending, Holy came, and the next thing you knew, it was over without closing things up, and then it was the "500 years later" <scene> in the future. There's a large margin buried there. A margin for the imagination. Nojima-san and Toriyama are going to be filling something of that with VII, though, while they're at their best and can do it."

--"So, will it become a sequel to VII's story?"

Nojima
"I have a strong feeling that they're going to be connected."

--"Huh, so VII and X ARE connected?"

Nojima
"Well, there's not many specifics to it. I know that what becomes of people when they die is among them; you could say that it's basically the same. Both <concepts came to> function along the same line of thought as I wrote the stories.
Sometimes my thoughts just flow out like that, even though pyreflies distinctly aren't green."

--"When you speak of the dead becoming <something> green, do you perhaps <mean>......?"

Nojima

"Yes. In my mind, pyreflies and VII's Lifestream are the same substance."

Kitase
"Nojima-san's even considering making use of an idea like this -- <with> an addition to the idea of life origin -- in a sequel to FFX International. That's just a little bit of the thought that's been going into what to do with VII."

Nojima
"That's right. There's something like the Lifestream <in X's world also>......."

--"'An addition to the idea of life origin'......does that mean you're going to revise life origin concepts or something?"

Nojima
"I can't say......it's a secret (laughs)."

Kitase
"It's a surprise with how someone from the story conducts theirself with regards to the Farplane."

SIDE NOTE: They are estimated at having come from another world three thousand years before FFVII's storyline. This is because we know that they didn't leave Spira until one thousand years after X-2 (Stated by Nojima), and a "great tragedy/occurrence" caused them to lose access to their technology/most knowledge of it. This was likely Jenova. If so, that puts another two thousand years between X-2 and VII, with Jenova wiping out nearly an entire race, sending countless people into hiding, and basically forcing them to lose access to most of their technology in between. Just wanted to have that clear for the rest of the post.

So with the subtle hints in the trailer; the red feather near the yellow lily, the ffx and ff7 are connected interview, combined with Nojima saying pyreflies are just like the lifestream... there;s actually a lot of evidence that could mean Aerith can and will be revived.

That would be so awesome if they did. She can already solidify because of Cloud, so maybe her revival will be JUST like Tidus'

I hope this retains the magical feeling that the first game captured for me, and that it feels less like the spin-off titles which milked Cloud and Sephiroth so much that the soreness of their nipples are probably what made them turn so whiny.
Milked Cloud? The only thing that milked Cloud was Advent Children, KH, and Dissidia. Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerberus, the novels... it never focuses on Cloud. :okay:

I'll ignore that Cloud is whiny comment. :ahmed:

They haven't said yet, yo. Since Square said they'd only do FFVII once they surpassed it's popularity with another FF, I think it's pretty clear they did this because their wallets are taking a beating. I hope it comes to all platforms just so everyone can play it.

So, if I know Nomura---this remake is gonna be HELLA different.

Let's hope it's more serious and they're changes for the better. *sweats*

they probably don't decide to remake ff9 because it's a game about a kid with a monkey tail... it looks a little odd, is all.

and the whole wall market experience wasnt 10x weirder than a kid with a monkey tail lmao

i dont think 9 needs a remake, the design of that game is too much of a nod to the old style final fantasy. i think visually (As everything else is perfect) visually, it just needs cleaning up a little. its perfect enough

id say viii would need a bit more. i think some of the story could be fixed a little, the whole OMG WE FORGOT EACH OTHER is absurd, at least for the guys that grew up in garden, theres no real reason they would need to forget, naturally, they could forget that edea was matron as they were kids.... the levelling up with monesters could do with fixing as well. there is absolutely no reason why the mons cant level up with you if you overpower instead of level matching throughout.

thats just my thoughts anyway ^^

Also, did I mention HOW EXCITED I AM!!!

As it turns out, the Midgar park appears to not be the one we know from Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core.
Instead, it is the shape of the Forgotten Capital’s shell-house.

And the sword that the children are playing with is none other than Cloud’s Fusion Sword.

tTnbZvM.jpg

So, presumably, that means that this part of the trailer where the children are playing is set in the future, by who knows how many years after FFVII. This is heavily suggested since there is SUNLIGHT in the ‘Midgar’ park, which means this isn’t the Midgar like we know it.

The entire planet reveres and pays tribute to CLOUD & AERITH (as individual heroes, not as a couple-thing ok! :hmph: ) for their roles in saving the planet.

I’ll just be over here…. crying my eyes out like a big baby.

FFVII's plot is actually the darkest and more mature in the franchise (VII and VI) so I feel like it'll be what the game always was intended to be if they remove most of the tongue-in-cheek-comedic scenes.

I agree that FFVII is amongst the darkest FFs in the series. Rather than going into it again here my thoughts on the creepy and dark side of FFVII are explained here: http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/t...part-of-Final-Fantasy-7?p=1091203#post1091203

However, I do feel that the perfect combination of darkness, horror, and humour are the components that made FFVII so successful. It's what made me enjoy the game so much. Like life itself there was a combination of sadness, happiness, and goofiness.

Even if we take the sci-fi theme alone, it most certainly requires some quirky elements. In the original game the horror of Jenova was accompanied with that awesomely quirky theme tune taking inspiration from the Twilight Zone and old science-fiction horror. We also had Hojo turning into a Mr. Hyde type guy (or perhaps he was morphing into all sorts of monstrous forms more akin to John Carpenter's The Thing). These moments are crazy, but still contribute to the dark themes.

Then there is humour which is much needed. Would The Last of Us have been successful if there wasn't a good script which combined sadness, genuine horror, and then the light relief of comedy. Natural comedy, not forced comedy. There are clever ways to work comedy into a script so that it doesn't distract the audience from the plot for too long.

The original FFVII did this quite well as well. Even if they tone it down a little bit, I hope that they don't remove some of the most memorable scenes in the game. Who doesn't want to see the Gold Saucer play with all of its cheesy over-acting? It certainly needs tweaking for PS4 graphics, but I wouldn't want it to be removed entirely. Don Corneo also needs to stay! Lots of people love that guy! They need to be brave with this and embrace the challenge of modernising FFVII without shying away from these other aspects.

That said, it also wouldn't be a bad thing to see some scenes re-interpreted. We still have the original game for our preferred versions, but it could create interesting discussion amongst fans if some things were redone. Perhaps Don Corneo could be darker. Perhaps the player could genuinely fear him, rather than laugh with him. He is, after all, an attempted rapist who keeps a hideous monster in the sewers underneath his bondage mansion. They coloured this with humour in the original, but it is pretty dark.

I love the Don Corneo that I know, but if they did alter him for this remake, then I want it to be for interesting reasons. Therefore if they strip away the cheesy humour I want him to be truly terrifying and not dull.

I didn't even think about that. :hal:

Watson, you genius! :watching:

You're welcome. :argor:

I may be entirely wrong, but it's the first thing that came to mind when I saw a feather of that colour landing there at the same time as those words that you point out were said. I wouldn't mind it if in a remake we were allowed to revive Aerith, maybe even post-game so that it doesn't mess with the story. We didn't really get to play as Aerith long enough to naturally develop her abilities (without spending ages grinding before her death, etc), and so it would be good to be able to play as her again to do some post-game / end-game or even game-plus content.

I guess that shot does suggest that it is a different park.

Sector6-ffvii-park.png

Although the swings are in a similar place, and it is possible that the slide is so horribly disfigured by the years (and by the damage done to it by the fall of the plate nearby during FFVII).

I don't see see that shell-house in it, personally, but it might represent any number of shells that were seen in the vicinity of the Forgotten Capital. This may well be a different slide and park area entirely.

It's probably wise to consider that this may be the future, and that they may actually be play-acting as Cloud.

Now the question is... Why all of these scenes from the future? Is it purely for the teaser? Or will the remake be narrated from the future? That might be quite odd, but I guess it will be a new angle.

As it turns out, the Midgar park appears to not be the one we know from Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core.

I’ll just be over here…. crying my eyes out like a big baby.

So some parts are not of the beginning?

Hmmm who knows what it could mean lol. I hope SE develop this title with continuous fan feedback, but obviously they won't do that.

This game will take ages to be developed. This could be even worse than the announcement of FFXIII Versus.

I hope SE knows what the fuck they are doing. -__-

Also Zack -> Cloud everytime!
Cloud is a mindless clone/drone who doesn't have his own personality/soul so he stole Zack's personality whaha and he can't decide who to make love to Earith (Zack's wifey) or Tifa!!
(Barret would have done them both like a baws)

FF7 was my first ff title sure, but not my favo. Wish they will remake ff8 as well :D :D

EDIT:

Btw at first I just thought the trailer was made purely for E3, but now you do have a lot of points that make sense. It's definitely narrated from a future perspective/point of view. Does my English make any sense lol.

As long as ATB battle system core remains in a sped up form ala FF X-2 i'll be happy with this don't want it turned into an action rpg (gone into this in more detail in another thread) you can't use the improved graphics as an excuse to dismiss the ATB as irrelevant and too old fashioned for PS4. I can see them probably compromising by doing a pick how you want to play the game choice though like Dissidia 012 where you were allowed play the game more like an action game or an RPG. FF VIII remake would be awesome too or VI.

Now the question is... Why all of these scenes from the future? Is it purely for the teaser? Or will the remake be narrated from the future? That might be quite odd, but I guess it will be a new angle.

I guess that scene in the park would make complete sense if it was narrated from the future. Perhaps some of these children were the ones kidnapped by Kadaj and his cohorts and taken to the Forgotten City and so would naturally play act the person who ended up saving them.

Personally though, I think it's all just teaser to give us an idea of what the game will look and feel like.

Yes I am going for the idea that the trailer was purely made for E3 and for the fans and that it's not actually representative of the final product in any way cause that would change the original game completely with these past referrences and future narrative.

What I loved about the trailer was Barret and Cloud getting of the train together. FF7's intro was amazing at the time. I actually was stuck numerous times cause I couldn't defeat the scorpion boss before the timer ran out or I was stuck before getting to the boss I can't remember exactly why I was stuck there haha, but it had to do with the fixed camera angle that I couldn't proceed at all. Great times.

Day 1 purely for nostalgic feelings and my curiousness for the chosen VA's for the game. Will they pick the same VA's as AC? Who knows.

Final Fantasy VII Remake winter update to include official title, other details in planning

The Final Fantasy VII Remake announcement has come and gone, and our next update is coming in the winter. We don’t know what that update will include, but we at least know the game’s title might be announced.

Speaking with Dengeki Online, director Tetsuya Nomura suggested the remake will be more than just pretty graphics.

“We can’t talk about any further details, but it won’t be a simple remake,” Nomura said. “Even if we were only making the graphics prettier for a next-generation machine, I don’t think it would exceed the original version. If that were the case, the original International version will be available on PlayStation 4, so you could just play that and be done.

“We haven’t put out any screenshots yet, but we’re making considerable progress, so please look forward to it. This time we are formally introducing Nojima as the scenario writer. That being the case, he will be influencing the setup as far as the story, so you’ll have that to look forward to as well.

“Sometime during the winter, we’re planning to have a follow-up report. I believe we’re going to announce the official title, at least, but as for other details, we’re in the process of determining what we’re going to put out.”

Speaking with Famitsu, Nomura reiterated that simply recreating the game’s graphics is not something to be excited about. Rather, “If you’re doing a full remake, it must be made with a different approach that matches the times. Because it’s now, and precisely because this is a full remake, I want to see what kind of fun is possible.”

If you missed it, yesterday, Nomura discussed a bit more about the game.

He makes sense, but at the same time I am really worried if they can handle it. If they can't handle it it will backfire immensely. People will bitch when they alter too much. I don't know what to feel about this.....

The most important thing is the story stays the same and make people enjoy the game at the fullest without loosing that special spirit you had when you first played it. Another thing is that they should keep the ATB system as the original game. That is what makes the game fun to play. If they change it, it will loose a big part of the enjoyment.

I wonder if there will be any backlash at the fact that AVALANCHE is a terrorist organization and kills shit tons of people by blowing the reactors up. At least in the US maybe.

I don't think they will keep it. It might be similar somewhat but it'll have a twist to it. Like they said, they want to have fun and take a different approach. Bring it up to date.

In reference to the woes regarding potential retconning the story and the inclusion of children playing with Buster Swords, I have two points to make. First, this is a promotional trailer and may not necessarily be in-game scenes. Secondly, if they are in-game scenes, consider the context of the narration, which discusses past events in the past tense, suggesting the trailer is not initially set in the past, but the most present moment we have in the FFVII Universe. Put more clearly, I mean that the trailer is set after the events of FFVII, at some point in the compilation of the series, where Cloud has openly saved Midgar/the world again, and looks after many children in the slums, so these children may simply be some of his youngsters idolising their father figure.

More generally, I am overwhelmingly thrilled by this news. I am very much firmly in the "you have the original if you think it's ruined" camp. My ideal remake would have a battle/combat/roaming/everything system as in the original but that realistically won't happen; however, I'm happy either way. I am intrigued about the narrator's voice - it's familiar, and I wonder if he will be playing someone in the final story?

I would be fine with references to AC/DOC/CC/BC etc - in fact, I hold a strong hope that they will package CC at least in with the remake, if only has a HD port to PS4. Like with the KH series, FFVII is quite spread out, and I'd like to buy a package with everything updated on it in one box.

Hopefully Nobuo Uematsu comes back for some STELLAR rearrangements of our old classics.

The motorbike chase/escaping from Shinra, the Honeybee Inn, Aerith's death, Nibelheim's destruction, blowing up the plate over Sector 7, Shinra vs the Weapons, the Summons, the limit breaks. All of these scenes in glorious PS4 HD. I cannot wait.

My money's on a 20th Anniversary/2017 release.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, WISHFUL THINKING

Sony let the bomb out of the bag this E3 with the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Remake. So what can we possibly see in this remake that was not available in the technology from 18 years ago. Let’s take a look.

Graphics – This is a no brainer we will be seeing cutting edge visuals most likely on par with Final Fantasy 15.

Battle System – Final Fantasy VII was a turned based system and it worked well in its time, but in 2015 turned based games are not existent. I have a feeling this remake battle system will be either a mix such as Final Fantasy 15 or something more like Final Fantasy 13.

Materia – Finding spells/summons and upgrading them to master level is what left this games replayablity really high, don’t mess with it Square Enix.

Online – Remember the Battle Arena at the Golden Saucer? How cool would this be to be able to fight other Clouds like a PVP arena.Maybe even have a co-op mode.

Story – Untouched but I bet a lot of the improper translations from Japanese to English will be fixed. Sorry guys but Aerith still dies.

Dialogue – On par with FFX-FF15 there will be no more reading but all live voice actors.

Now after reading all of this it appears Square Enix has either a lot of work to do or it may disappoint. What would you like to see in the remake?

Since the teaser strongly implies that we should think along the lines of them making this game fit within the wider FFVII Compilation, I thought again about other material from the FFVII Compilation that they might make references to.

What I wouldn’t mind seeing:

A few light references (nothing major or too distracting) revealing what happened to prequel characters such as Cissnei.

A few references to Zack, but not too many. The references in the original game didn’t provide much information on him, nor did they need to since he was kept as a secret for most of the game, and he was best kept as a mysterious figure to shock the players at the time. Now, however, everybody knows about Zack and he is no longer a surprise. I do not, however, want there to be a big focus on Zack, but there could perhaps be some relics throughout the game which relate to Zack. Perhaps a few people will talk about him (in addition to Aerith and his parents in Gongaga from the original game), or perhaps there will be physical traces of him dotted about.

I didn’t really like the Loveless poem in Crisis Core. To me it seemed quite pretentiously overquoted, but then again Genesis was a fanatic. However some people loved it and since Loveless is advertised in Midgar in the original game I guess I wouldn’t mind a few little references to it around that area, or even further afield, but nothing too important to be made from it.

What I would not like to see:
References to FFX’s universe which try to force the connection between the two planets, which seems unnatural and distracting, in my opinion. The story is complicated enough without having to wrap our heads around how the little Tuskan Raider which accompanies Yuna in FFX-2 somehow founds the Shinra family line, and where that all fits in with FFVII’s antiquity with the Cetra fighting Jenova.

If there are references to the Deepground soldiers or Genesis, etc, then I want them to be minimal. I disliked these stories and I feel that they lessen the impact of the original FFVII story. The more they steer clear of these the better.

I also would not like to see wings. The ‘One-Winged-Angel’ was originally just an artistic decision to make the ultimate form of Sephiroth take on the characteristics of a fallen angel (completing the many religious themes seen throughout the game), much in line with Kefka’s final form, and many other final bosses in the franchise since. Why the FFVII Compilation then decided to make Sephiroth, Genesis, Angeal, Hollander (etc, etc), actually grow a single wing, and then actually manage to fly relatively majestically without flap-flipping themselves in a barrel-roll into a puddle is beyond me. The concept was cool for creating a freaky end boss (and an infinitely much better design than the Bizarro Sephiroth which preceded it), but it detracts from Sephiroth’s power as a villain to draw from it beyond that, I feel. Perhaps I’m alone on this one.

I wonder if there will be any backlash at the fact that AVALANCHE is a terrorist organization and kills shit tons of people by blowing the reactors up. At least in the US maybe.

That’s a very good point. AVALANCHE are terrorists. They call themselves eco-terrorists in the original game, I think. Although they don’t aim to kill people they act as saboteurs to throw a spanner in the works of Shinra, and yes they do kill Shinra employees, etc… And who knows who was actually affected by the explosions that they set off. They are extremists and in the eyes of many citizens in the FFVII world (even the ones who share their environmental sensibilities and hatred of Shinra’s corrupt grip on the planet) AVALANCHE are to be feared and could be considered villains. Of course the better nature of Barrett and his group wins out, but there are profound moral issues to think about here.

This is quite a delicate theme in this day and age. I don't think there will be an uproar because most people already know about the plot of FFVII. However, I have a feeling that they may gloss over some of this, although that would be sad if they did. These themes need to be tackled and addressed rather than avoided.
