I've seen a couple of these threads, but I haven't seen this one specifically. So, out of the other male characters in the original game (not including Cait Sith) which do you prefer and why?

I prefer Vincent overall, because his story tangent adds a unique flare to the game, he's fun to obtain (The Vincent/Shinra Manor side-quest), he's great in battle, with a long range weapon and his Limit Breaks are cool as well, although sometimes impractical to use. Vote Numero Uno Goes To Vince!

Cid, he had the most original/dynamic personality of the three, and he's the one I relied most on in battle. My party tended to be Cloud, Tifa and Cid and I'd occaisionally switch in Red or Yuffie when need be.

Plus, he's a Highwind, and all Highwinds are awsome by default (see also: Kain Highwind).

Barret was cool too, and had some really great lines in the game. I would've chosen him had I not been such a sucker for Lancers.

Vincent is imo, grossly overrated. In the original FF7 he had the personality of a broomstick. I like him much more now after seeing him actually interact with other characters, but he still fills the stereotype of "cold badass," something everyone else seems to adore. (see also: Shadow, Amarant, Auron, Basch) Personally, I find these types of characters to be annoyingly bland, and there usually have to do alot more to earn my liking of them.

My thoughts exactly, I found his personality bland and boring. It seemed like he only had like 10 lines in the game, completely overrated IMO.

Anyway I'm going to vote for Barrett, I liked his tough guy attitude and his victory dance made me lol.

I was tied up between either Vincent or Barret, but I'm going to go with Barret. He is one of my favourite characters in FFVII. His character look is good, i love his gun arm and how its attached to his hand. Hes got a good past story and hes just an overall good character. Not to mention some of the things he says are really funny :P

Vincent has a very dark and mysterious personality which i think was cool. I liked his overdrives as well especially his last one. His overall character design is great as well.

Now i can't leave out Cid. I also really liked Cid just not as much as the other 2. Cid was really funny and he had some good overdrives as well.

I only prefer vincent because of his death penalty if you kill 65 000 monsters with vincent thats the damage he deals with his death penalty its a long run to kill many monsters with him but its worth it.

Vincent: Screw the personality - I'm going for his usefulness in the game: He's a long-range fighter and a decent materia user so being put in the back row is optimal for him.

The only down side is the lack of control with his limit breaks, but as long as it doesn't kill off the rest of the characters, then it's cool by me.

Gotta be cid for the comedy factor. I loved Cid from the first time i met him, i like his personality, hes always swearing and insulting others not afraid to say what hes thinking. As a fighter he was great aswell his highwind limit was fairly powerfull but heck even if his limits did zero damage i would still favour him because frankly the guy is just a sheer class act.
Barret was also funny, again swearing a lot and trying to take the piss out of cloud but usually failing.
Vincent was ok i guess, a tad boring for my liking but i know thats why hes loved by many others....uhmm yea.
Cid ftw

Well I gotta say it's Vincent, his background kind of interested me, and his look is kinda cool, I liked his attacks but not very fond of his limitbreaks since I can't control them which really sucked to me.

Vincent Valentine is the better character out of these three.

His limit breaks are awesum, mainly his Chaos limit break, it rocks and is my second fav limit in the entire game (omnislash is the best) also, the way you obtain him has it's benefits. mainly the summon you recieve as you open the safe, I believe it is the Odin materia)

Cid ftw
Need I remind you how awful Cid treated Shenra after she messed up his dream of going into space? The poor woman suffered for years. In any case, Barret was my favourite. A huge man with a machinegun for an arm, he was indisputably the best character in FFVII.

I voted Cid without thinking. Barrett would have been my first choice though. I originally was like "CID IS SO FUNNY HE SWEARS"... which does make him stand out, but not necessarily the best. Barrett has the best past, he doesn't need spin offs like Dirge of Cerberus to fully flesh out his character. He's a family man until the point where, you know, his family basically dies. He's the only character who is saving the world to save his child. And the story behind why he has that ridiculous gun arm isn't all that ridiculous, he was trying to save a friend, and when said friend returns he persuits to save him. Barrett has the strongest character despite his flaws, and where Vincent has an OKAY one, he's really played out. He's not as cliche as some people would make him seem, in DoC he actually does have a pretty caring side, and is, admittedly, badass.

I had to say Cid. Yeah, he's a complete and utter hardass of a douche who seems to not care about anything but his planes, but the guy's actually kind of a softy underneath it all. I'm not denying that he does treat Shera like shit, but the fact that he gave up his only chance for his dream to save her when she told him to go ahead has to mean something. He also gets just as soft as everyone else when Aeris dies. If anything, his attitude is more of a show, imo.

But I've gotta say that Vincent is a fairly close second. He's been a high favorite probably since I started playing the game and first got him, mostly because of his story and the fact that he's not really as bland as he seems. I seem to recall a few times where he made some offhanded joke and no one caught it because it was him. *shrug* Plus they really made some changes to him in Dirge in that case.

My choice is Vincent, there really wasn't that much back round info about him he said he was apart of the Turks and something happened but it was his mysterious personality that caught some attention plus he was sleeping in a coffin.

I'm between Cid and Vincent,I like both very much.I'll go with Vincent cause his story is more interesting and deep, plus his story is more related with Sephiroth.Plus he has his own game FTW!xDD,so the SE gave us the chance to learn more about Vincent, his sins that torture him and how much he keeps suffering for something he thinks he's the one to blame. So pretty much he should be called a tragic character. His story was touching and near the end I cried(of DoC).

Its Cid for me, and it really isnt even close. I never like Barret and Vincent from the beginning. The only thing that really makes Vincent kind of compete is Chaos, but I much rather like seeing Cid cuss all the time and act the way he does over a guy whos just standing there. And the Venus Gospel is a bad@$$ weapon.

Please tell me how Barret is better than say Nanaki aka Red XIII, or Cid, or even Cloud for instance? In combat its not even close, I dont get how people drool over Barret. Sure the guns cool, but other than the cool look he is completly useless.

I prefer Barret over Vincent and Cid. HE has a sad background story. He tries to be a dad and tries to save the planet for his daughter. Another reason he does these things, is because he wants to repent for what happened in Corel and what happened with Dyne. And even if the going gets tough, he keeps on going.
Cid is my second best character because the way he talks and because he wants to go in outer space and likes airplanes, just like me xD.
Vincent as a mysterious character but I didn't get him on my first few runs because I didn't know where to get him. But not my most favourite because I didn't really give him a chance. Also his background is a bit shady.

Barret isn’t “completely useless.” His final limit-break (Catastrophe), is the most devastating in the entire game; even more powerful than Cloud’s ominslash limit-break. Oh, and the fact that he has a mean rug on his grill propels him into stratospheric heights of beard-dom.

Anyone who has arms bigger than tree trunks should be deemed cool. Indefinitely.

In battle I prefer Barret due to the fact most of his weapons are long range so that and the fact he's the only char that can get natural max and the reduced damage from the back row make him one tough cookie to take down. I tend not to use limits as a deciding factor since it's random when you'll get one in a boss fight so I prefer to focuse on the many rounds between those times. Though the game is easy enough you can use anyone you like. My main party usualy consists of Cloud (duh) Barret and Tiffa. Though I do on occasions hack Aerith back into the game with the gameshark. In my opinion her final limit beats omnislash any day of the week.
