better game

Some people like FF7 more some people like FF8 more. Personally FF7 is still my favorite of all time. And to answer you're question the better game is FF7, becuase of the story, characters and the reputation it has built up with all it's fans. FF8 is also right behind FF7 though for me.

FFVIII

First game I played and it will always have a place in my heart. I loved the story line and characters and yes even the junction system. As for FFVII, I really like it but I’m afraid it doesn’t even come second in my list of favourite final fantasy’s.
 
For me, both games are almost equally good, but for different reasons. However, I think that FFVII has just that little bit of extra magic, mainly because I was younger when I first saw it and played it, and have more of those scrambled, rosy-coloured 'childhood-memories' of it. :)

FFVIII is a close second, though.

You say close second as if it was just edging out an imaginary third between the two :)

Personally I love VIII a lot more then VII. Overall the I loved the soundtrack a lot more, that's not saying I don't like VII's I just like VIII more. Also I could connect and understand the characters a lot more. The ending to me is epic as well.
 
FFVIII. It started off being my first favourite FF game ever, then VII overtook it, then it slipped up into 2nd place again.

It's so fun to play!
 
VIII for me, It was the Second FF game I finished and I absolutely loved it, I found the junction system very fun and interesting, I was also captivated by the first half of the story (the second half was still enjoyable but not as good as the first).
 
The thing with the junction system is that it discourages me from actually casting magic. In other FF's, where you cast magic with AP or mana, you know you can restore your AP, but when I cast a spell in FFVIII, I feel as if I'm losing magic and at the same time I'm undermining my own junctions!

So I like the materia system in VII better than the junction system in VIII. :)
 
Er...technically, VIII is better. For the first two discs it's fine. But after that the plot begins to fall apart. Plus, the character's aren't likable and I was annoyed by the junction system. VII has an better story, better characters, and the materia system is much better than the junction system. Pity about the graphics, though...

Oh, and poor, neglected IX beats both of them by far. :)
 
What's really good about the Materia system? People say it's better, then leave it at that.
 
I wouldn't be able to give you a good, detailed explanation to why the Materia system is better. I think stating that it 'is' better somewhat overstates it; it just feels better.

It's not that the Materia system is that perfect (I still can't fit my head around it entirely) but the junction system, however simple it is, prevents me from casting magic. I can't really put a finger on it. The junction system feels less special, it lacks the fooling around with combinations you have with materia, and most importantly, I feel that casting magic spells is eating away at my own junctions!
 
Its just what you are in to. I like FF8 better though i have not played it recently, FF7 is just really popular because it was a break through at the time

And it really comes down to preference, to be honest. I don't think there's really such a thing as a "better game" when it comes to the Final Fantasy series because all of them (well most) are just THAT good. I don't think there's a way to define a fine line between two FF games since a lot prefers FFVII and thinks it's better, but the others think otherwise. So whose opinion do you go with?

Personally, I love both games and to this day, I still cannot decide which I like best. I'd like to say FFVII, but then I keep thinking, "Well wait a minute, FFVIII also has a lot of features that I like." So I've stopped debating with myself and just stick with the idea that I think both games are great and unique in their own way.
 
i think it has a lot to do with which one you play first. It seems like a majority of final fantasy fans became fans when they first played either ff7 or ff8. i personally started with ff7 (even though i wanted ff8. my folks got ff7 by accident instead). and even now, i like ff7 better than ff8. i mean, imo 7 had it all. it had a simple yet deep magic pairing system. not to say that ff8's wasn't, but it started out too complex. i really didn't understand how to completely use it to my advantage until very late in the game.

7 also had better character development when compared to 8. but this was a pretty close race for me.

8 had that bitching card game. but 7 had chocobo racing. and i really didn't like 8's chocobo game.

8 had that horrible way of earning money. the seed tests? i mean honestly? i'd rather have random monsters in forests carrying money pouches. lol.

bottom line for me is, if i was forced to never play one of the two ever again, it'd be 8.

still love both though. great games.
 
I really like them both, two of my favourite games right thar

And i like them both for different reason, I think VII will always be my favourtite though, especially since it was like my first FF. Loved the story, the materia system was nifty although looking abck I don't think it's anything special mind, although I liked the freedom they gave you to pretty much do what you want with them

VIII again, loved the story, abit of a slow starter but didn't really take all that long and it was a tad confusing - actually alot confusing....haha, I quite liked the junction system aswel, although drawing magic really sucked. Some boring shit right there

I think, thinking about it, I'd say VII was better just because I understood the story abit more, although mastering materia is just as irritating as stocking magic...... ugh, for me it's like maaaarginal. That's just IMO though :monster:

In my opinion 8 is my fav for many reasons that Ive expressed several times on this forum.

of course there's no answer. that's the point. most threads are based on opinions. if every thread was a question and an answer, forums would be quite boring, no?

Yes and what most these threads lead to are arguments which is sad as some people give great opinions. I was just saying im sure there are plenty of these threads and its always the same 2 games compared.
 
i personally think final fantasy 3 for the super NES is the best but is it a rare game?
