You want me? l Come find me

First of all, I couldn't find a thread about this in the IX section however, if you see a similar thread, do what you will and, i'm sorry in advance.

You know how in IX everytime you defeat a boss you never get any EXP? Does this bother you at all?

IMO--I find this rather annoying and its one of the things I don't like in this game. I love IX but, if I could change it I would.

I mean, you spend a lot of time (depending) on fighting the boss itself and you want an award no? I sure as hell do! And EXP would be useful >_> AP's good and all but, EXP is too. I don't understand (and correct me if im wrong) but, don't all the FFs give you EXP once you defeat the boss?(the once that have the 'EXP' thing unlike X for example)

So, FFF do you agree with me? Disagree?
Would love to see what you guys say!

The last two FFs I played, FFs V and VIII don't offer exp EXP for boss battles either, but they do however offer large amounts of ABP/AP (respectively).

To be honest, I think the AP reward, plus a large amount of gil (plus usually a nice/rare item) is reward enough after a boss battle. Though, I guess it is a little counter intuitive; defeating a hard, advanced enemy would surely help a character develop at least as much as they average enemy you encounter in the field.

V I haven't played at really VIII? :hmmm: i'm a lil rusty xD havent played for a while

I mean, I do see your point when you say that you get gil and AP andwhat but, I just don't understand the reasoning behind it and why you don't recive EXP. I mean you get everything else so, why not EXP too?

The only good thing is if a character dies in battle they won't fall behind.

That's one thing I do like about getting no EXP--I'm always really picky about not letting certain characters fall behind in levels and if they ever KO in a boss battle I always have to restart, unless it's a character I don't like. If you do get EXP in a boss battle it's usually a substantial amount, so it messes things up if your characters die in battle and they don't get this :( I was a little shocked by it though in IX (and I think I've seen it in VIII so far too)--it's frustrating when I've been sitting there for twenty minutes and am expecting to get more out of it than AP, especially when all my characters have already learned the skills from their weapons/armor. I think the last time I defeated Ozma, everyone already had all their skills learned, and when I got whatever the AP amount was I just went :ffs:.

It didn't really bother me all that much. I do remember being slightly surprised my first playthrough when I fought a boss and got no EXP. But as the game progressed, I don't think it really made a huge difference.

Yeah me too. I like my characters pretty even in levels and im OCD about that XD idunno, it just bothers me when they aren't xD
and yeah, the hard bosses is what frustrate me :hmmm: and I understand what you mean Kate when you say that they already know their abilites and whatnot it's rather annoying cause the AP's useless.

I mean tbh it's not a hard game to level up in i'd say so, I guess it doesn't really matter you can level up afterwards but, idunno. At first it bugged me a bit and not so much now. I just thought of this thread to see others view on it as well.

Was there ever any legitimate reason why there was no exp gained from these battles? Was this just something they tried out and honestly thought to be a good idea? It was pretty terrible, I agree. I just never liked the idea that I could level up on all these little woodland creatures and such, but a big Antillion (sp?) couldn't give me anything in return for slaying it. It definitely took away from the rewarding feeling of beating on them, even if slightly.

When I was a kid, the first time it happened, I thought it was a glitch.

Im almost afraid to admit this. But I honestly dont remember this at all. Of course I played through this one once only back when it came out. Looks like im hooking the PS2 back up tomorrow.

Now that I think about it, it almost makes sense. If your strong enough to take out the boss, you should be walking all over the stuff before it. After that boss you are just building up to the next one. So really they don't have to give you more right then and there because you just passed the "test" so to speak. Follow?

I get what you're saying, but how does that warrant the test itself not giving you anything back?

It's like a class grade... You (usually) get a bunch of frivolous points for homework and assignments leading up to the tests that allow you to properly take the test in the first place. But once you get that test, you suddenly won't receive a grade or credit? Of course not, your points or credit awarded are more massive than anything else.

No, it certainly doesn't make too much sense. I guess I am just trying to justify it somehow. Sometimes in life all you get from challenges is the simple satisfaction that you did it. Like in the end what do you get from sitting down for 40 hours and beating an FF. Sure now with PS3 and Xbox360 you get trophies and achievements, but before that. All you got was the simple satisfaction. I think im stretching it a little.

I agree with you. I mean the things you do (i.e.) test-- you should get credit. I mean, I guess you do get some things like AP Gil etc but, it just doesn't make sense and i'm not quite sure as to why they decided not to have EXP at the end of a boss battle.

Well, yeah satisfaction too but I mean, the hard work that you put into following up to the boss so to say, should pay off. I think, anyway that you should be able to receive exp I mean, there's no real reason why you shouldn't. You fight little critters and they give you EXP so why not bosses? Hmmm? it just doesnt seem logical and make no sense to me.

My guess would be...to make it "harder". They knew the game was pretty easy, so they probaly thought "Why not take EXP away from bosses? That will make this game slightly harder!!" Thats all i can think of for a reason.

Meh. Idunno. I mean, that could be true but, I really would like an explanation. I mean, if they didn't take it off, the characters would've developed faster in levels. It just annoyed me. =/

It never really bothered me much at all. It was the completely opposite of Chrono Cross where you didn't get any EXP from regular monsters. It made things just a little bit more challenging in my opinion.

I think the purpose was to make training more important. In previous RPGs you could kill bosses and get tons of XP and sometimes jump 2-3 levels. This change made it to where you had to train prior to engaging bosses, instead of relying on boss XP to keep you up to par.

Honestly, it doesn't effect my play style, because I would train regardless. I'll usually stick to an area until I've stolen all relevant items, learned all enemy skills, and gotten the important loot anyways. In the end it just means I get a little less XP when I kill the boss...

It doesn't bother me. It did at first, after playing VII getting EXP, then...not. I don't feel as dissapointed if one of my party dies and doesn't get EXP either, that used to piss me off no end in VII. I guess it's just because it's a battle you HAVE to do, so they don't wanna give the EXP for it......? Fuck knows. Either way, it doesn't bother me anymore. Just suck it up and get on with it. You still tend to get a decent amount of AP and decent steals/drops

When I played through this the first time I thought it was odd that they don't give any EX. But after when I beat it I read up on some challanges that people were trying to do, like level one challages? Maybe the developers on the wanted us to test it? That's why the game has it in the first place. But then from earlier final fantasy's, remember those boss battle that were so difficult you would rather bash your head against concrete instead? And then when it's over you were expecting a ton more experience than what you got? Frustrating too, yes?

I... never really noticed that, actually. I thought it only happened when you fought bosses but didn't actually kill them (e.g. Beatrix and Lani, where they run before you can finish them). I guess I'll have to pay more attention to it next time.
I don't really mind not getting EXP, it's just the way the game works. I don't usually have problems with any of the bosses and if I want to level up later in the game I just go and hunt Grand Dragons.

I didn't notice...except if I just don't recall it right since I haven't played the game for over a year.
I'm sure it would have annoyed, otherwise why beat the boss if it won't let you grow?

It doesn't bother me at all. I'd much rather take the AP. The rewards to me are the items you steal from the bosses, although it can take forever to do! Yes,Im obsessive and have to get the items haha.

Plus it's not very hard for me to level up on there. By the end, most of my party is in the 90s with their level.
