As the series progressed, it seems you can choose your names less and less. In X you could only choose the name for Tidus and your summons. In XII, i'm not sure you could choose any of the names. And I know in XIII you can't. Back in seven I believe you had control over everyone's name. Do you miss this option to give your character silly and ridiculous names just for the heck of it? Or naming it after you and your friends? Or could you really just not care in the least bit. I really don't mind. I always named my characters the default names anyways... but what do you all think?

Though i always keep the default names on my first play through, it was fun to change their names to something ridiculous on the second play through. And it also made for some fun youtube videos. So yeah, I kind of miss being able to change their names, but it's not a big loss.

I never ever change their names, because I'm not creative enough to come up with a cool/weird name :P

Honestly, I never rename my characters anyway. I only rename "Aeris" to "Aerith" in FFVII, these days.

Sure, it was fun when I was younger, and the characters would be like, my name and my friend's names, but then I ended up having no idea what people were on about when they were discussing the story, so I stopped xD

I like seeing people call their characters funny names, especially when they get really creative, it can be so hilarious. But for me, that would annoy me on a playthrough.

I like keeping the characters real names now, for some reason. The first time I played FFVII, I named all the characters after FFX people xD

I used to miss naming my characters quite considerably. Back then I would like to toy and experiment with character names just to amuse myself. I remember doing that for Final Fantasy VI. Unfortunately, the names I gave the characters ended up being horribly confusing and I had difficulties working out who was who.

Nowadays, I still miss it a little bit to an extent, but mostly I'm content with the default names now. It's a trivial aspect that has been lost - and I'm fine with that. It's a small price to pay for having voiceovers now. I really like FFXII's voices - it wouldn't have been the same if the voices didn't exist and we were at liberty to change the characters' names.

Not really. I've almost always stuck with default names.

I mean, for Persona 3 and 4, I went online to see what their names were in the manga before I gave the MCs their names, so it's not just FF - I'm too lazy to be creative with names in all games xD

When I was younger I loved doing it. The lead female role was always named after me lol. But yeah as Mark said, it can get confusing storywise lol. And I guess now with voice over, its impossible.

I remember in my first playthrough of FF7 I named them all crazy names: Roanoke, Massacre, GuardianX etc. Now I rename Aeris Aerith and Dagger
Sarah

When i was little and first played a few of the games such as FFVII i would change the names of the characters. Cloud would be my name, and all the other characters i would name after friends that reminded me of them. Now a days i just use default names because i find it much better and easier. So no i'm not really missing the name changes in the later games.

Never change their names, ever, most I do is change that dog of Rinoas to Velcro. It all gets confusing when you start rnaming shit, especially if you're trying to discuss it with someone, so nah, I can't say I miss the option of being able to rename folk

When I first played FF games (and other JRPGs) I used to change the characters' names all the time. Sometimes I would even forget the real name of the characters because I used names that I made up. I remember being disappointed when I found out that you could only change the names of Squall, Rinoa, and Angelo in FFVIII. Now whenever I play through these games, I never bother changing their names. I don't really miss it, since I most likely wouldn't change the names of the characters if I had a choice.

I can see why they stopped giving that option now that the games are fully voiced. It would be pretty inconvenient to not be able to use a character's name in the middle of a cut scene.

I miss it, it was the fun creative side of FF, I mean the second play through you could name them after other characters or really ridiculouly funny names XD Or name Cloud after a chicken and Barret after Mr. T, it was all for fun back then...then VA's came along :tongue1:

You should at least be able to name the protaganist.

On the other hand we never got to hear Tidus' name because you got to name him and that was weird XD

I too used to mess around with the names a little after the first playthrough but I can't say I really miss it as I stopped doing that quite a while ago. Plus, with all the characters having voice actors now it would be pretty difficult and very probable that it would sound weird if people kept talking to each other without ever saying a characters name. I think a favourite of mine was when my brother played FFVII and renamed all his characters but stopped soon after because he couldn't remember who was who; the only one that sticks with me was that he called Tifa "Brilo Pad".

Yeah. I usually change the names of people I know or like for the characters that suit them. For X, I just changed the names of the summons to random people.

I actually quite miss naming characters as others have stated its sometimes quite fun to change characters name for youtube vids or even as references to people you know. I can understand there reasoning as sometimes it can become a little confusing, but personally I'd love for them to make it an unlockable feature for after a first playthrough completion.

I'm not all that bothered about it, to be honest. In the original FF I just named my characters after other characters, and in FFVIII I usually end up naming Rinoa's dog "My arse" for a bit of a cackle (I know its immature =P) but otherwise I tend to keep the original names. In those games with voice acting, having named characters is preferable...it gets annoying if they omit the name of a character when they're talking. Play Baten Kaitos and you'll know what I'm talking about~

I never rename my characters anyway so the lack of the feature never really bothered me. The only time I change a character's name is only when the said character does not have a name to begin with, like in Suikoden, then I just randomly make one up and stick with it. Otherwise I stick with default names to avoid confusion.

I mean some of the characters original names in FF are ike whaaaat? But, all in all I doon't really miss it. Sometimes I did think the names I gave some of the characters suited them better but it's not such a big loss. I mean in a way, like in X when you did have the choice, Yuna in X-2 sounded funny because she kept saying 'him' like really? I thought it would've been better to leave it the way it was tbh.

It's not something im going to cry over because it doesn't really matter. And if I really wanted to, I could go on turn my playstation and rename them I mean its something that if I wanted to, I could go back and do.

As for future FF games and whatnot i'm glad they decided to not let you rename them sometimes, its better that way IMO.

Though i always keep the default names on my first play through, it was fun to change their names to something ridiculous on the second play through. And it also made for some fun youtube videos. So yeah, I kind of miss being able to change their names, but it's not a big loss.

Same here, i never really cared for naming my characthers other then their original names.

i don't miss this, i didn't even know until you mentioned it right now.

The only names I ever changed were Aeris to Aerith and Eiko to Ekiko, simply because that's how I always pronounce her name for some reason...

It's safe to say I don't miss it though, since I never used the feature aside from the two instances mentioned above. It's just always seemed so pointless to me.
