FFXIII-2 Discussion Thread

-Moogles arent anything there just pet toys, I don't see this moogle having any significant input in the game other then being in some cutscenes just wandering around (bit like Sazh's chocobo).

-Puzzles: well thats a sigh of relief if there is.....but I'm not sure if that red-tile thing really is a puzzle/minigame......I'm imagining it's something like the cloister of trails in X (which was annoying :rage:) I'm iagining it will lead on to reveal an extra location perhaps in XIII-2.

-Cinematic action :hmph: it's a game not a movie

So it's not looking good so far for people who disliked FFXIII.......But I probably will buy it despite its minor (hardly any) improvements :wacky:.

I know about that. Haters gonna hate. They have the right to put forward such opinions. I am just stating facts :)

Anyways, I strongly believe the moogles play much larger parts than the baby chocobo. Because it's not only seen in cutscenes, also in fields.

cloister of trials = puzzle
isnt it?
I am pretty certain it's some sort of puzzle. There is a 'retry' option at the bottom right of the screen. I agree about the extra location thing.

As for cinematic action, I believe it's either a form of limit break where you have to put a set of commands/buttons (like in FFVIII or X). Or it is a controllable cutscene (something like quick time event), where you press a button and there are different outcomes. So it's actually the opposite of watching movie (hopefully. just speculating).

I will definitely buy it too :) I mean, it's Final Fantasy!

I agree, but looking at it from a haters perspective hardly any of their issues have been addressed (apart from the linearity). The cloister of trails is a puzzle certainly, however me personally and I'm sure a lot more hated it with a passion, its something that causes nothing but grief and is also unneccesary. It would be nice if they added a minigame at least to break things up a little.

I may have to take my word back on the cinematic action, it does look like it's for limit breaks and cinematic action for that makes the battle look better (though if it's their 5-ATB gauge move it's not really a limit break).

I'm still unsure about the moogle's appearence, In other FF's they havent had a major role, and even if they did in this one I'm not a big fan of theirs. :/

But still, I'm looking forward to it......One turn off for me is this Noel guy taking Lightning's spotlight. :(

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Fixes XIII’s Town Issue

Many fans were disappointed when towns weren’t included in Final Fantasy XIII but it seems from the latest teaser trailer that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will once again include towns.

The teaser trailer showed a short clip of the player running along a beach area but the mini map seems to suggest a hut area which is possibly a town. Fingers crossed for Final Fantasy fans that towns are back as it would help XIII-2 improve upon XIII.

2 minutes trailer is just out!!!

I am super excited. Watched it like 5 times. It's definitely better than XIII 'in every aspect' in my opinion.

All the maps shown so far are no longer linear. I see more than 2 towns with NPCs. Those cinematic actions are like quick time events. You can seem to control summons like you control characters now. Puzzles. Monster controlling.

"I saw you in my dream"
SerahxNoel <3

I like the voice acting for them too.

Who cares about Snow haha.

Can't wait for more details.

EDIT: The soothing music in the middle is beautiful. I am guessing Hamauzu is back?

i'm impressed with that trailer XD i'm defo liking the cinematic bits in battles looks fun... but looks like their is an delay in the release :(

I like the whole mystery about Lightning from what I've seen in that trailer, it's kind of a nice twist to have people think she's dead :wacky: making Serah look crazy.

That Noel guy looks awesome! I hope he has some intruiging story to him, like I reckon he's connected to Lightning somehow.... and where is Snow in all this? He ain't even seen with NORA in the trailer, I hope he knows about Serah's travelling buddy.:mokken:

I'm liking the comments from you guys as well, looks like they took a little critique on board at least.

gameplay footage.

Honestly, I am quite impressed yet again. The only complaint is the same combat system. But the battle system itself has been improved by a lot.

There are 2 videos. One is on gameplay, the other is on puzzles.

Some things:
-You an actually TALK to NPCs and get a clever response, instead of just eavesdropping like the previous game.
-Sometimes, if you defeat a monster, you 'capture' them. These monsters take the last slot. Like let's say you captured monster A and B. Monster A is a ravager while monster B is a commando. If you change paradigm to rav rav rav, monster A will come and assist you. If you change to com com com, monster B will assist you. Or something like that. Very interesting.
-There are now semi-random encounters apparently. Monsters do not appear on the field. If they are 'about to appear', the moogle will show you his clock. The faster you get to the monster, the better the battle will be. E.g., if you have preemptive strike, you apparently get haste boost for all characters as seen in the footage.
-Paradigm shift is now seamless, without those annoying short scenes in between.
-Much less linear maps with wider corridors and branches (see the map at the later part of the video)
-There are people even in places where there are monsters
-When it's raining, there will be water droplets on the camera, apparently
-cutscenes can suddenly appear seamlessly (like FFXIII versus). E.g. the hand that destroys the structure.
-you apparently get gils from battle. rating and crystogen returns.
-Second video are puzzles for you to travel to another place. Something to do with timelines, I am not sure.

This is not seen in the link, but what I saw from another site, you can now choose what to say in a dialog/decide what to do in an event. Kind of like the older FF games.

I am so excited!!! I want it now...

Ah I really could not find any e3 stuff anywhere about Final Fantasy XIII-2. Thanks for posting this gameplay sample though. Too me it looks better. I think I saw a town :hmmm: Also yes, as I have said the capture system is probably going to be one of the best features in the game. Kinda reminds me of tales of symphonia II but in a good way. Oh choices? Reminds me of Mass Effect.

http://finalfantasy13-2game.com/#!/uk/locations/

new bodhum. The new home for Serah and co. The crystallised cocoon in the background is so pretty...

But why does it look different from the attacked town in the trailer? Is it just me?

EDIT:
more footage!!!
http://rpgamex.com/previews/a-couple-sneak-peaks-at-some-final-fantasy-xiii-2-gameplay/

what are those gates???

EDIT2:
http://www.ign.com/videos/2011/06/07/e3-2011-final-fantasy-xiii-2-gameplay-off-screen

ROFL at:
Noel: Hey Mog, what do you think about all this?
Mog: Umm I think I like Serah more than I like Noel, kupo!
Noel: Ouch you know I have feelings right?

It's not surprising because Mog is apparently Serah's weapon now.
And at the end of the video, they just got pwned! I wonder if we have to grind in order to beat Atlas, or is he an optional boss? Why aren't the NPCs panicking since a huge monster is there? Anyway, I am really liking the 'semi random battle' system. Hopefully they are really 'random' and not just on fixed spots.

EDIT3: I think there are light spoilers in here, so don't watch if you don't want to be spoiled at all.

Mysterious...
spoiler alert!
Why is Pulse 'up' there? I thought it's the other way round? Am I missing something here? Also, why is cocoon still inhabited? This is evidence of time travel and messed-up alternate reality, apparently. I like this kind of plot! Serah and Noel seems to have used the gate to time travel/teleport to cocoon. But then again, why would Pulse be above cocoon, floating? I don't understand...

http://www.siliconera.com/2011/06/07/whats-new-in-final-fantasy-xiii-2s-battle-system/
detailed write-up on battle system. Feral link seems to be a kind of limit break for monsters. Cinematic action can be used in regular fights.

Watches new trailer. :mokken:

Oh my gosh, Noel is so dreamy. He's like a kind hero, so protective and kind, and good looking. :surprised:

Screw the game lol, just buy me a poster of Noel and everything will be heaven on earth. :griin:

About Snow, hopefully he's gone, so Noel and Serah can be a couple instead.
It sounds cold wishing that he's dead though, maybe hopefully a divorce.
:hmmm:

I'm wondering if the gameplay will change (probably not)......But if you can remember the E3 2006 trailer of FFXIII showing gameplay footage was completely different to the final product. But since this is a few months away I'm guessing probably not, other than any minor changes.

A laughable thing about the trailer is one minute Serah is fighting against a Titan-like creature, the next she trips over a dead soldier and cries for Lightning when a little robot is about to attack her :lew:.

I'm slightly curious about the other characters though, where the heck have they gotten to? I'm even getting slightly concerned about what may have happened Mr.Hero :wacky:

@Cid XIII-2 I think I may have answered that in the news section thread.

If you read the about the Fabula Nova Crystallis you'd know about the invisible world and visible world. A sad thing though is that Lightning said "In a world where I no longer exist". If she actually means that and she probably does as people did say that was the Goddess Etro's throne (who greets the souls of the dead), she may actually be dead  (but maybe bought back to life somehow as we saw her fightning).

Okay... after hours of watching many different demo footages played by different people, here are some things I have noticed:

-Apparently, not only that monsters do not appear on field anymore, their appearance is sometimes random, like the older games' random encounter. I notice this because in one particular spot on the map, there is monster encounter in one demo video, but there isn't any encounter in another video uploaded by another person. I observed this in some other spots too. I am sure 80% about this.
-But before you fight them, you get to see the monster popping out of nowhere, so you can choose to run away or not.
-Not all the monsters that appear on the actual battle is seen in the field. e.g. if you see one flandragora in the field, in the battle, there are 3 flandragoras and a behemoth.
-you have to decide fast before the mog clock turns red and you get automatically into battle with penalties such as slow status. If you approach the monster quickly, you get boosts like preemptive strike and haste.

I think I am going to like this 'semi-random encounter' system a lot.

Story wise:
SPOILERS
-They keep talking about alternate dimensions.
-In one of the videos, a marketing coordinator from Square Enix explained on the demo a little bit. It appears that paradoxes occur, and it result in people thinking that Lightning is dead. Only Serah remembers it but she doesn't know where Lightning actually is.
-The paradox apparently caused Lake Bresha to appear different.
-The appearance of the large monster, Atlas, is also due to the paradox thing.
Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_mgYngQbP8

I really hope the story-telling is elaborate and clear this time round. They are dealing with time travel/alternate dimensions here, and these things confuse people.

It's going to be weird to see Serah fighting... In the last game, people complained that she looked 12.

I wonder what other characters will return to this game. I actually want to see what Hope looks like now. (One of the few who likes him.)

I'm getting this game either way cause I enjoyed FFXIII more than any other FF title, but I think that E3 kinda made my hopes fall for the game...

Serah seems to be more of a main character than Lightning going by the info we have now

We still haven't seen/heard Snow, and seeing as we spent all of XIII to save his lady, I'd be pissed if he didn't have a large role.

Multiple endings?! :\

Apparently the game focuses less on story this time around :(

Just watched the whole Final Fantasy XIII-2 demo from E3. I must say that it is interesting that the paradoxes change the game and the choices you make. Fight Atlas head on or go weaken him with that device by solving a puzzle. I wonder if that is somewhere at the beginning. Atlas is appearing because of the Paradoxes and all. It looks a lot like Titan though. I am interested in XIII-2 and I will buy it of course. One thing with Serah's moogle transforming into a bow and sword... that makes me headesk repetitively.

Linearity was one issue some fans had with Final Fantasy XIII. Square Enix addressed this in Final Fantasy XIII-2 with windy maps and multiple ways to move the story forward. The Live Event system we mentioned earlier lets players decide what Noel and Serah do. When they go toe to toe with Atlas, an ethereal giant, they have two choices – find an artifact and try to control it or "live in the moment" and flight Atlas head on.

I tried to fight Atlas, but I didn’t get very far. One punch, even when all characters were Sentinels, crushed the party. If you level up enough, it is possible to defeat Atlas, but there is another strategy. Explore the ruins a bit more and grab an artifact. When you control Atlas, the giant glows yellow and is significantly weaker.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 also has a puzzle mini-game where you guide Noel and Serah outside a temporal rift between reality. In the Void Beyond, players stand on red tiles that disappear after you move. The objective is to collect all of the crystals to "resolve the anomaly" and then touch a goal. Starting with a straight run from start to finish, puzzles get progressively more difficult. These were added to vary gameplay in Final Fantasy XIII-2 a bit.

Other factoids about Final Fantasy XIII-2 Square Enix explained and confirmed to Siliconera:

  • Serah’s moogle transforms into a bow *and* a sword.

  • What’s a… mog clock? It’s a new system in Final Fantasy XIII-2. When you spot enemies a mog clock appears underneath them. Trigger a fight with an enemy by hitting it while the clock is green and you’ll begin the battle with a preemptive strike and haste status. Attack the enemy while its yellow and you won’t get any bonuses. If the enemy hits you when the mog clock is in red, the enemy gets to attack first.

  • You can run from fights if the mog clock runs out and the enemy is far away. You’ll know if you’re far enough if the ring around Noel and the enemy is gray. Red means you’re in a fighting zone.

  • In addition to dodging damage, completing cinematic events gives your characters a positive status effect. Noel gains the attack boosting brave status. Serah’s magic gets charged with faith status.

  • Switching paradigms automatically switches monsters. The Warhorn (a behemoth-like creature) appears under a commando paradigm. Flanbanero, an orange flan that’s fond of water spells, is a ravager.

  • The team designed battles for players to use feral link, a monster special attack, often. A synchronization gauge lets you know when the attack is ready and it fills fast.

  • Final Fantasy XIII-2 has secret enemies. A cactuar is hidden in a specific room of the demo, but there is only a small chance you’ll run into the monster.

Oh wait! The whole magic concept thing. Do ya think they'll be l'Cie things going on again, or just usage of... devices which cause... magic.

Maybe once a l'cie completes their focus their powers remain?
Or if Lightning is dead or in another world, maybe she can use magic there?

EDIT: The new Game Informer magazine mentions something about Lightning in Valhalla, which makes sense

FFXIII-2 to sport branching maps, mini-games.

Continuing the flood of Final Fantasy XIII-2 factoids floating out of hands-on previews at E3, Square Enix has apparently decided to shake up the original FFXIII’s formula somewhat.

20110610ffxiii-2.jpg

Siliconera got some time with the game and reports it has shaken off the “run down a corridor” feel of FFXIII.
Maps now wind through the environment and proceed to the next story point along multiple paths.

Additionally, the dash-and-bash formula is intermittently interrupted by a mini-game called Beyond the Void. It sounds a little like a sliding-tile puzzle, where the tiles disappear once used.

FFXIII carried on FFXII’s tradition of avoidable random encounters, adding the spice of ambushes if you took the enemy by surprise. FFXIII-2 will do something similar, with the addition of a Mog Clock timer. Catch your foe while the clock’s in the green and you’ll have the advantage – in the red? Not so much.

In combat, a special, monster-based ability called feral link appears when a gauge fills. You’re supposed to crack it out at every possible chance rather than wait around for special occasions. The monsters you bring into battle change with your paradigm, too – magic-using flans in ravager, for example.

The game will also feature multiple endings in a series first.

FFXIII-2 is due on Western PlayStation 3s and Xbox 360s in early 2012.
