i just sarted ffXII and i am very annoyed with the way battles work. i dont see why they couldnt stick with the same style of game play, that is one of the things i loved most about ff games. not pleased at all. anyone else feel the same?

I don't hate it. It's a different game and I don't take it as a Final Fantasy anymore apart from its title. In fact, I loved the battle system even though you technically couldn't even avoid hits by monsters by running around them. It just added to the dynamic and motion of the game.

And...if you think about it, it's almost like the ATB system, but just with the real world going on around you.

Le sigh. There is already a thread for discussing things that annoy you within the game.

On-topic, I actually liked the battle system a lot. It was one of my favorite things about the game. The gambits did glitch sometimes but overall I quite enjoyed it. Random battles were fine but sometimes you just don't feel like fighting. I liked being able to avoid monsters easily if I wanted to.

I hated it. By the time I FINALLY got used to it, it was nearing the end of the game. I'ts certainly convienient (& addmitedly it's not TOO bad once you geyt used too it) but I found that the battles where too fast paced & I spent most of my time just watching the battles. Which was like watching the dullest film ever

I think the battle system is actually a step forward. To be honest I was getting annoyied of random battles, and having to endlessly wander around to find certain enemies, now its much easier. It's not entirly diffrent either. It's still the traditional ATB system but with the added feature of being able to designate automatic commands to characters and, like Jeremiah said, the world is still going on around you. Sure sometimes it does get boring, but didn't the old way? at least with this you can sit back, make a cup of Coffee, and relax whilst your characters kick butt. If you don't want to, just turn Gambits off ;)

^ Agreed, I liked it too, more motion and stuff.

No, but you could avoid being hit just enough to get your own gouge full an strike back right away, which means that if you are faster then that opponent you have a another turn coming.

Also the fact that the summons moved around too is pretty cool too.

At first I was a little disapointed in it. But after playing 80+ hours I now love it and dont think the normal type battle system would be the same with XII.

Just give it a chance. I thought I was going to hate it, but I like it. Its different to the turn based and you do get time to make decisions when you pull up your character menu.

To some people it's slow to pick up, but I never really minded. You have to think deep down - are random battles still going to look impressive in future titles, or should the battle system change for the better good?

Random battles were never a FF thing either, many other games have adopted that system of levelling up.

Now you get to travel across a vast world like you should do, it makes more sense to realistically encounter your monsters - Magna Carta had this system, in a way (you could see monsters and attack them, but it was poorly done. Awful battle system.

I know some people don't like change, but how is battling going to get any better for the series?

Moving onto stuff like Gambits, theyre good for presetting moves you hate to do manually, and though you get some useless ones, you get your good ones.

Quickenings are damaging when chained together, so when you unlock them, and use them efficiently, it'll help you get past some nasty bosses.

Ever remember casting a move in previous games but realised it was the wrong one? You can change that by simply selecting the preferred command - now how awesome is that?

Fleeing away is a lot harder, but, it kinda makes sense. In earlier games, where you didn't have such a beautiful world to explore, there seemed little point in having enemies following you. Unless it was part of the storyline. Now you can see the enemies, it makes sense for fleeing to be a bit harder as a monster would realistically not give up so easily.

The new system is a challenge. Some like it because it's fresh, some don't like it because theyre like traditional values.

FFXII is still a Final Fantasy title through and through for many reasons. You have your unique races, much more love for Moogles has been shown in this title then probably in most other FF's - they get more recognition in this game in other words. I know some people didn't like the summons being changed, but at least some of the names were FF related, like Chaos and Zeromus.

You have your standard FF weapons, Magic, Chocobos, Airships, Intimidating villains, a Cid character (
Who is a villain
), Amazing graphical towns/cities/landscapes/monsters/character designs.

You have your usual gang of "misfits" - Two sky pirates, a soldier with a troubled past, your geeky teen hero/main person that runs around, your girly character, and the main heroine.

Back to the battle system - if you hate a character, you don't have to use them. Just choose your preferred three, and you're sorted!

..

I think I've overloaded. Oh well, enjoy reading..

I loved the battle system.

The old FF's had unrealistic, flawed, slow battle systems. While they were fun, the FFXII battle system was a much better system IMO, that they should've thought of earlier. You can chain exp quickly, and dont have to run around hoping for a battle. You can use the environment to your advantage rather than standing idle while the enemy does their attack, and all 3 players can be attacking at once, rather than taking turns.
Once you start doing the mega boss hunts you will start to like it, as they are much more enjoyable in this battle system rather than the older ones.

The old battle systems were getting boring. FF needed something new. FFX was successful and so was 12. Both of which had a change in battle systems.

La la la, just walking around the world map, not a care in the world *bam* monsters attack. A little more walking *bam* another monster battle. This is getting fun...

Yes, I can see how older FF battle systems are superior to XII.

I Believe This Game Is The Best In The Series At The Moment. The Game in my opinions has no flaws and is great in all aspects of characters, storyline, sound and graphics.

I Love The Gambit systems because i dun have to worry about healing hp and status ailments as the gambit systems allows automatic controlling on Fran and Penelo (who are my healers) do their job without my worries.

Also I Love How The Characters arent restricted to one sorta weapon and can change to any weapon like guns, swords, bows in the midst of a battle whch is kool.

Another great thing is if your party of 3 characters gets KO'd in battle, its not game over, they allow you to remove the dead and input ya other 3 characters, which in other games it was game over even if you had 3 0r 4 characters sill alive! Top Game definately 9.5 or 10 out of 10 from me.

Quickenings are damaging when chained together, so when you unlock them, and use them efficiently, it'll help you get past some nasty bosses.

Unless you utterly fail at them like I do. :P

Yes. The ability to cancel moves is great and it really comes in handy in harder battles (Ultima, for example). I used to hate putting in the wrong command and then having to wait a whole turn to rectify it.

I actually thought fleeing was much easier in this game since you could do it immediately. Sure you'd have to run a bit of a distance to get the enemies to stop chasing you but in the old battle systems, it could take forever for them to flee the battle. A lot of times I'd just give up trying to flee and just finish the battle.

The new system is a challenge. Some like it because it's fresh, some don't like it because theyre like traditional values.

Concur.

I've also noticed that a lot of people complain about the gambit system giving them less control over battles and whatnot but I don't find that to be necessarily true. It's really all about the setup. And in boss fights, high rank mark hunts and esper battles, I had to change strategies during battle a lot so I was pretty much controlling all of my characters. I only really had gambits for healing and such.

sure i prefer the turn-based system but i played through this twice and i started to adapt to the new battle, and its really not as bad as i once thought. the most annoying thing is when gambits dont wory, and no matter how far you run away from a monster, if it has you targeted and it swings its melee weapon, it hits you. but give it some time, im sure you'll eventually like it.

It seems like a lot of people have had problems with faulty gambits or mobs still able to hit when you run - yet I had none of this when I played. I use a hell of a lot of Gambits and they always work, and if I run monsters chase but delay their attack until they reach me, or pause it if I get a swing in first.
Perhaps there have been tweaks and adjustments between the JP/US versions and the PAL/International versions?

i dont hate it, but i do hope they don't forget about the good old fashioned final fantasy style of battle either. I dont want to see all this real time battling all the time either

We have had real time battle system for ONE game. Maybe the creators should have thought about how irritating random battles got after so long...maybe they should have realised not everyone enjoyed seeing them time and time again. There isn't really a Final Fantasy battle system anyway. I've seen similar random battles in Magical Starsign for one..

I can't say I hate it. I just didn't play enough time of FFXII to say i liked it or not. It felt different for sure, it was not bad for sure. Why did I stopped playing? I got kind of bored. I will certainly pick up FFXII where I left it, but only after finishing FFIX. Actually I think I will start over from the beginning cuz i forgot the whole point of the story.
