I absolutly HATE the battle system in this game

I found the battle system annoying because of the fact that you couldn't dodge attacks by moving.

I like being able to sit back and enjoy the show; characters slaughtering monsters left and right. Thus, the Gambit System is a staple to future FF games, in my opinion.

well get ready for a let down it doesn't look like ff13 is going to have the Gambit System but... i could be wrong

i don't know what people are complaining about the battle system was good actually it was one of the few things that was good about the game

My fav part would be running away :P But I hate that in the gambit system you must already have those things named if you know what I mean. In FFX the Sphere Grid was much better

Square should've killed random encounters when they had the chance to with FFVII, they really do detract from the overall gameplay experience. It's not as though the ATB system is entirely dependant on a separate screen for it to work; Chrono Trigger, a game released 2 years before VII, has shown that turn-based systems can still be fun and challenging when battling enemies that are actually on the map and not conjured up from thin air. Why it took so long to finally get rid of them is beyond me.

the reason Feng Yun the random encounters hasn't changed until now is because the random encounters was good until now square have rely-ed heavily on this system was because most people liked it you Feng Yun are one of the few people who didn't like

They should have done something sooner, tried to experiment with things. Why should the company be worried about excluding the random battles when it's not a major part of enjoying FF?

I'm sure there are many people who are glad random encounters have left the series. Not just a few.

i agree with anyone that likes the new battle system.. lets face it when u dont have to worry bout random battles when ur in a hurry it makes 4 bettr gameplay.. but wat i didnt like about the battle system was just like sum1 else said u couldnt dodge attacks by simply moving out of the way.. that would have made the game a lot bettr.. and the gambit system yes a huge improvement no more worrying about healing when your party's health is low just set up a gambit.. and if u get bored set a fighting gambit leave the room and come back a little later with a bunch of levels and some sellable items to get rich quick

i'm not all that keen on the new battle system used in this game but i guess i will have to get used to it if i am to complete the game, which will take a long time

I tell you what, I didn't like it AT ALL at first. Infact I remember playing it thinking, this just isn't Final Fantasy. It lacks the grandeur of the spells and summons, and feels very MMO like.

But then towards the end of the game I found myself thinkin, how much worse this game with be with a CTB or ATB type of system, and how cleverly developed the Gambits were. The variety in things you can do, and how you can set your party up were so interesting, and grinding to reach lv99 does not feel like a chore.

I don't know about anybody else, but I now find turn based games very tedious. So many times I've turned Eternal Sonata off, despite its quirky part real time thing going on. And the amount of times I've played abit of the classic final fantasies and thought, random battles are so irritating. Perhaps it is just the random encounters I find so frustrating now, but FFXII's battle system was very inventive.

It was the severely lacking character development that was XII's achilles heel, IMO.

I agree with cpemblington. At first, I hated it. But when you get some decent Technicks, Magicks and Gambits, it becomes varied. If you want to, you can concentrate on the battle and make the most of it, but training is made much easier: it does it for you!

I also found the Technicks much more interesting than skills: their variation and often very original effects were quite enjoyable (though not always so useful =D ).

Yea i really dont like it either but i guess its a step up from the other ones

Mod Edit: Put more effort into your posts, thanks.

I tend to agree with the new battle system. I think that the random encounters were a nice way to transition from the field to battle in the past, but the need for these encounters has now passed us. As we move into these next generation systems, I feel that it's time we are offered next generation games. Generally, the graphics have gotten a lot better over the years, but a lot of games still use outdated ideas for game play. Can anyone really tell me that Halo 3 plays that much differently from Heretic, Doom or any of the old FPS's?

I like that the battle systems in the FF series have slowly evolved. The use of the gambit system actually gave our Heroes a crude AI when attacking and gave us the ability to allow our characters to react the way we prefer, instead of however the characters were programmed. Granted, the license system made the characters too similar to provide uniqueness, but that's for a different thread. :)

I don't dislike any of the old battle systems, as they were great for the game at that time and made a lot of the games what they were. I also don't think FF XII solved all of our battle systems issues/desires at once. But I do think SE is finally moving in the right direction. I sincerely hope the system used in XIII continues to build on the momentum gained in FF XII.

I'm on the fence. It wasn't a bad system if I think about the game as a separate entity. But it doesn't really feel like a Final Fantasy without turn-based attacks. Some people say that these sort of expectations make the FF franchise stuffy and unable to grow; but the simple fact is that if SE wants to make a different game, then they ought to release it under a new name. FFXII as a whole had its FF elements to it, but it really stretched the limit for me.

I like it. It's a change from the random encounters. Both battle systems are good once you get used to them. The traditional system has its drawbacks, as does the active dimension system. Though I'd personally prefer the turn-based system, but without the random encounters, perhaps, so you know what you're up against. I've heard that FFXIII is going to move a bit closer to the original system.

It's kinda weird.

It isn't as strategic and slow as the old turn-based system; but isn't as fast as the real time battles.

I didn't like it so much at the beginning; but right now i'm really enjoying the battle system.

i think it was boring and easy, and it reduced the need of strategy, as all you had to do was leave the controller and the gambits would kill the enemy, i only bothered using my left hand to move the party as you dont need to use your right because of the gambits.

also the system kinda reminded me of X-2, which is a bad thing
