I looked around and didn't see anything like this ever happening, which surprises me =D

Mafia is an IRL party/group game, but has been adapted to a web-based game. It goes like this:
In its simplest form, Mafia consists of two sides: the Mafia, and the Town. The Mafia's goal is to kill the innocents, while the Town's goal is to kill the Mafia.
At the beginning of the game, the Moderator will secretly send everyone their role. The Mafia will know each other, while (in the basic game) everyone else will only know their own role.
The game has two phases. Usually the first is Night. During Night, the Town can not communicate, but the Mafia can discuss and choose someone to murder and those with special roles can choose what to do with their roles by sending a message the Moderator. After the Moderator has received messages from Mafia and those with special roles, the dead person is revealed, the people with special roles get their results, and Day begins.
During Day, the Town must choose someone to Lynch; they are trying to eliminate the Mafia, but the Mafia can lead them astray by casting suspicion elsewhere. Generally, players will vote for someone they think is Mafia (the Mafia will vote so that they seem to be doing this as well, and might even vote for each other to confuse the Town); when a player gets a majority of the votes, they are lynched. Their role is revealed by the Moderator, and it is once again Night.
The game alternates between Night and Day until either the Mafia are eliminated, or the Mafia have killed everyone else.

This seems simple enough, but there's more. Particularly, the special roles - besides Townsfolk and Mafia, there also the special roles:

Cop - Each night, the Cop can investigate one player (by sending their name to the Moderator), and finds out whether that player is Mafia or not. The Cop is on the Town's side.

Doctor - Each night, the Doctor can choose one player to protect (by sending their name to the Moderator). If the Mafia (or anyone else) tries to kill that player, they will fail. The Doctor is on the Town's side.

Mason - The Masons are a group on the Town's side who know each other and can talk to each other at Night.

Serial Killer - The Serial Killer (often abbreviated as SK), may kill another player each Night (by sending their name to the Moderator). However, the Serial Killer is not on the Town's side or the Mafia's side. The Serial Killer wins when everyone else is dead.

Roleblocker - Each night, the Roleblocker can choose a player. That player will be prevented from using his or her night choice, if they have one. Commonly known as the Mafia Prostitute, who "sleeps with people" to block their roles and is part of Mafia =D

There are a lot more complicated roles and stuff, but these are the basic ones.

Also note:
-Sending messages to the Moderator = PMing them. e.g. The Mafia PMs who they want to kill, Cops PM who they want to investigate, Doctors PM who they want to protect etc.
-Townsfolk and Mafia talk in the thread, however the townsfolk and those with special roles (Uninformed Majority) don't know if each other are innocent, have special roles, or if they're even Mafia members.
-The Mafia members know who is innocent and who is Mafia, however they do not know the ones with special roles. They communicate with each other through group PMs. Usually the Godfather decides who to kill at night by PMing the Moderator. Also, there is the Godfather, the Goons (normal mafia members), and the Roleblocker(s)/Prostitute(s) in Mafia.
-Masons also know all the other Mason members, however they don't know if everyone else is Mafia or innocent. They also communicate through group PMs.
-Roles are selected randomly. The quantity of people with special roles depends on the quantity of people playing.

A lot more info can be found on the MafiaScum Wiki: http://www.mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

I think this is a rather good idea. We did this before on other forums and it went quite well. So why not here? It's very fun!

I would be the Moderator for the game, but my timezones are f'd up and I have school and other things to do. (Even though this week & next week I'm completely free... damn them timezones)

Feel free to ask questions if you don't understand something, and sorry if this has been brought up before or anything like that.

I have to say... that game looks like a lot of fun, and I'd like to play it. But there's the potential for cheating and the whole thing falling into chaos. I'd like to take part in it.

But....we have an RPG, and i dont see how its relevant to the site seeing as we are an FF site...
But....this is a forum game, and i dont see how its relevant that this site is a FF site...

We've had plenty of such competitions and forum games, and I don't see why we wouldn't host such a game.

This is the fun part. Anything and everything that people say (such as "I'm a cop! X is guilty of a crime!") can be and will be seen as a lame Mafia attempt at tricking everyone. The anonymity and the uninformed majority makes the game awesome.

If that's not what you mean, then can you please explain what you mean by "cheating"? =D

Hmm, interesting. I admit, I still can't really picture how this will play out, but if enough members are interested, why not? We can choose an active 'Moderator' (doesn't necessarily have to be an actual Moderator of this site) to direct and manage the event, but until then we'll have to see how many will actually take part in this since it will obviously require many members.

Ooooooh I LOVE this game. I think it'd be really fun to try a forum version, I've always had a blast playing it with friends and such. I'm not sure if I'd volunteer to be a moderator or want to play, tbh. :wacky: It's just such a fun game.... I think people might really enjoy this. :awesome: We generally played it with about 8-12 people... but we also didn't have the Masons and roleblocker... :hmmm:

Is that the game thats played on Myspace? I am not sure that game will be very fun here. I don't know if people who came here for Final Fantasy might like it, although if it is implemented, I would love to try it out :hmmm:

I'd be happier to be either Moderator or to take part. It sounds fun. How long does an average game last?

I used to play that game on Myspace too but I've yet to see a forum-version of it.

So a minimum of 8 members then? That sounds ace. We'll see how many will participate and go from there, then see who's interested to be the 'Mafia Moderator'. Since you understand how the game is played out, Jess, let us know if you decide to take on the role. =]

I wouldn't mind being moderator for at least the first time... what if we switched every couple of games? That way people can figure out how to play at first and then we can switch it up later on. Sound like a good idea? :hmmm:

Sounds interesting. It would be a fun game, with the potential to go far. We could ask around tosee if there's interest.

I got the idea from DissidiaForums, where 3 Mafia games took place (Including one where I participated and lasted 'till the end - we won! and I was a cop that only got Guilty results o.o) and one is currently taking place :3

If anyone is interested, then here are the threads:
Mafia #1
Mafia #2
Mafia #3 (the one I participated in!)

Sounds good to me. :) We just need someone who really knows what to do this first time around and see if it kicks off from there.

I found one of those themed games on the wiki. It was fun. Everyone deceiving one another and trying to point the blame. I really want to try this now. Look here.

This looks really interesting. I think it would be fun to have something like this here. If there was, I would gladly join it.

I think we have the following people interested:

Sho Minamimoto
Mitsuru Kirijo
Lacey Mosley
Ike
Mitsuki
Cardiac Kid
Rincewind
