What were Square Enix (Squaresoft at the time) thinking when they decided to make him the last boss? No mention of him at all throughout the game and he comes out of nowhere at the end. What is that all about? It ruined the game for me a little bit. It's an injustice really as apart from the ending, I thought FFIX was a great game.

Sorry if a topic similar to this has already been posted.

Ugh, I totally agree.

I mean when I came up against him, (despite the fact that he was excruciatingly hard to defeat) I thought, "Huh?? Where did this floating lump of steel rings come from??" :gasp:

But he did have significance, I reckon.

Because he was saying something about Gaia and Terra.

Ehh. :wacky:

I'm sure there's a fred round here somewhere :wacky: I was wondering why he seemed to be so random aswel, but he's the Lifa Tree apparently....

Though I can see why people think he's a little extraneous and comes out of nowhere, I think some people go a little overboard in their hatred of Necron. It hardly ruins the game in my eyes anyway. His presence is referred to vaguely at one point in the game, I have a link here to a FF wikipedia which mentions it:
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Necron

I do think his statements in how people desire death and nothingness to escape from pain are picked up on in FFX by Seymour and Yunalesca. So it almost acts as a precursor to the next game in the series.

I thought Necron was cool. And for some reason, I like surprise last bosses. :p

I kinda find him good......
At least he gave me a challenge when handling the final battle.

*hehe yep really wasnt expecting a blue "mr. clean" look alike with metal rings floating around would be the final boss of a game with such magnitude :)

*but what can we do about it? were just gamers?the creators can do anything to the game, they can even make a giant mutated bunny rabbit
be the final boss :D :D

... Now, that'll be much too hilarious to contain.
I'll be laughing non-stop till i get killed instantly.

And they still have to have it make some sense, i guess. Garland didn't seem to display an interest in rabbits.... (Assuming Necron was truly made by him)

*ehehe :D yep thatll be another shocker, and itll teach the gamers not to underestimate any boss no matter how ****ed up they look :D

*weeeeeeee :wacky:

I beat this game when it came out, so I was really young when I beat Necron. I was confused as hell when he showed up, though he turned out to be a pretty easy fight. I had no problems killing him, I thought that Kuja was much much harder.

I gotta say though, the dude had style. Floating rings? badass! :wacky:

Lol, i had more of a problem handling Necron than Kuja, whom i actually found easier.

Necron's Grand Cross always struck me with some mad ailment which could actually cripple my party enough to get killed by Neutron Ring, which follows up as the next attack.
Only later, i went back to the first few parts of Memoria to train, then i was able to crush him.

I don't think Necron was random at all

I have a link here to a FF wikipedia which mentions it:
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Necron
I checked that link out and it said something about Necron representing death, which makes sense to me (Necro is a Greek prefix meaning death). Since death is a fairly strong theme of FFIX (particularly with Vivi) it makes sense that the final fight is about the characters accepting that death is inevitable. When Necron is defeated he says something like "I am eternal", which in my opinion is saying that death will exist as long as life does.

As for Necron's story, there is a rumor that Necron is in fact the SoulCage (an undead boss fought in the Iifa tree who is the source of the mist). When the battle with SoulCage begins, he says "I have seen the end of my thousand year life, and it is not now. You cannot defeat me" which could be interpreted as evidence that SoulCage isn't actually killed when you fight him. Also, when the mist returns after Terra is destroyed it proves that SoulCage wasn't actually killed, as SoulCage is the only thing which can create the mist. There is more on this theory at the link Charliepanayi mentioned.

There are plenty of other theories on Necron

http://au.faqs.ign.com/articles/657/657330p1.html

This link here provides other possible explanations concerning Necron and other aspects of the game, some of which I found very interesting.

So to summarize I really don't think Necron was pointless or random, I definitely think he was included in the game for a reason other than having a big scary monster for the final boss.

I actually have more of an issue with Necron then Ultimecia, To me i can't see why people complain so much about Ultimecia but for Necron goes untouched mostly.
He did look great, Which is something Square always gets right with it's bosses.

well apparently he's the actual lifa tree and the soul cage was the fake one and garland did actually talked about him even if he didn't call it necron

Necron was awsome.....i beat him on my first go with about a lvl 50 team he was a little easy tho if u have stuff like jelly clear headed etc equiped but still the idea of him appearing outta no where supriesed me a little haha

When I first completed the game I did think to myself 'what the hell?' but after reading the link I understand it a little, but I don't see why Kuja couldn't be the final boss, I mean he was the main antagonist in the game, and then suddenly out of nowhere pops up Necron that got very little mention in the game really did he? Apparently he was also created by Garland?

I thought he was badass, he was very frustrating to fight, because he could strike you 3x before you could make a move. People are hating on him for no good reason, so what if he came out of nowhere, have an open mind.

I actually thought the surprise of Necron at the end was pretty clever and a huge disappointment to the main party when they had come so far after defeating Kuja that they now had to face off one more time.

I'm pretty sure Saix and myself have explained this a few times before in similar Necron threads, but a reference is made about Necron and the Iifa Tree when the Mist stops being produced half-way through the game. Necron's connection to the Iifa Tree is shortly visited earlier on between characters, but it can be confusing and easily missable.

Like I said though, after the battles with Death-Gaze, Garland, and Trance Kuja, the party is left for dead and fatigued at their attempts to save the world. Just when they are on the brink of success, the supposedly Almighty Necron decides thats the creation of living beings on Terra and Gaia do not deserve to live and the worlds should ceese to exist due to the abounding evil. Zidane and party do not want to feel like they spilled their guts for nothing, so they go toe-to-toe one more time with an enemy to prove they have a precious value on their own lives.

Sure Necron sorta pops outta left field at the end of the game, but another boss never hurt anyone. ;)

lol

well, i saw a pattern in every FF game ive played so far. that is the final boss- it seems to never be connected with the story... not directly at least...
its like, playing the game through the near end, while u start thinking: "omg i wonder wat will the last boss be like?"
and find urself surprised to see some big THING that looks uber strong, that was never mentioned in the story...

t'was a very good game tho!

Sephiroth wasn't connected to the main story? Could have sworn he was..

Anyways, back on topic, I thought Necron was really easy actually. I just didn't have any problems with him at all. Beat him in my first try, using Amarant, Zidane, Vivi, and Garnet.

Was pretty simple.. so yeah. Was actually sort of hoping for something stronger, but oh well.
