I won't be buying the game, more so on principle than any assumptions that it'll be a bad game. I'm just too upset with FFXIII-2's existence, in general, for a few reasons:
1.) FFXIII took about 5 years to produce, and yet they're spitting out a sequel to be due in a year?!
2.) I'm anxiously awaiting FFXIII Versus, and yet they delay the game's release even further by placing resources on a sequel for FFXIII.
...Stop teasing me, Square Enix! I just want Versus! D=
The Japanese reviews already appear to be saying that - it has scores of around 38/40 and 40/40, the latter from a reviewer who rarely gives perfect scores. The only complaint I've seen is in regards to the ending (which I've seen and personally liked!)I always buy the new Final Fantasy's. Always. However, I'll make an exception this time. To me FFXIII was not a Final Fantasy game and so I'll hold off on even acknowledging that XIII-2 exists unless I see reviews saying how it was so much better than it's predecessor and how it turned everything about the game around. I doubt that will happen and so I'll likely never play this game and continue to ignore XIII's existance.

Fair enough wanting to wait for an English review, though.
I have my doubts as well because of the trailers I've seen. The map seems to still be entirely linear, the leveling system is the same, the fighting seems to be the same. But I will look into it once it comes out over here. FFXIII got plenty good reviews too so I'll probably see what FF fans themselves say about it.

I have played XIII-2. The maps are not linear. Expect something less linear than X but less open than XII. There are however, 2 maps that are open-field style, even bigger than XII maps. The other maps are more like X, with more branching.
I observe many non-Japanese players who have played are quite disappointed with the game. But I can tell you that I really like the game, well except for the ending.
I think I will be finishing my review sooner or later. So if you want an opinion, you can read my review when it's up.
