Playstation Playstation 4

When people see a new piece of hardware, how much bang you get for your buck, is a totally reasonable point of discussion. The PC is a good bench mark for comparison because you can actually go out, find the exact components you want and an exact price.

pcgamer.com tried to see how much it would cost to build a PC of similar capabilities to the PS4 specs and ended up around the $600 mark. The new PC4 is said to launch at $429 and $529. The PC they put together is $600 today though, not $600 when the PS4 launch in November, so really, a pretty decent gaming PC doesn't have to cost a lot.

You make valid points however the pc shouldnt be talked about at all when it comes to consoles imo. I dont buy consoles for the superspecs nor for superior graphics. I admit HD is very amazing but I bought consoles for the special games consoles provide. Exclusives. Also unique features.

Like Tekken on PSX at the time. I cant imagine playing that with keyboard and mouse.

You are basically saying consoles are not worth it all cause a pc might be at same price and better. When it comes to specs perhaps, when it comes to graphics but those are not the main reasons people buy consoles. If it was, consoles would have been dead.

They're different worlds, but it's as much a learning curve as a console. Not to mention, gamepads have been around for PC as well for years. Fighting games and the like actually become just as natural with time as a console does. It just takes time.

I don't think he means consoles are not worth it, he's just making a point. Consoles have a place in gaming, just like PCs do, just like arcade cabinets do. It's like the gap between those who build their PCs and those who just buy one at Best Buy. It's a simpler route with less of a headache, but some people want to go that extra mile because they love getting more out of their hobby. Consoles are more so.

(Mobile gaming *is* pointless IMO, though. :P PSP, Vita, DS etc are just fail)

Handhelds are not mobile gaming, Jeff :mokken:

No, I would never say that. Personally, I have to admit that I don't think consoles are worth it, but value is a subjective thing and one man's trash is another man's treasure. My point was that contrary to common misconception, you don't need to moonlight as a prostitute, sell your kids, or take a second mortgage in your house to buy a decent PC.

I'm not impressed with the Sony press conference and the PS4 at all. No backwards compatability? Really? Not even PSX or PS2? Thanks alot, there goes your launch sales. Oh, but we get to buy the games again and stream them online? That's everything I ever wanted....or..

Nah, I'm not looking forward to this console. I will most likely buy it, I've been playing on Sony consoles as far back as I can remember almost but I will definetly not get this at launch. Perhaps not even within the first two years. I mean Watch Dogs looks good, Dragon Age III will be out at some point but there is no way I'm buying a console for that.

Good graphics is a nice bonus and all, but I really couldn't care less...

Sony shares new PlayStation 4 details at GDC
Real names optional, bigger friends list, and more.
March 27, 2013 / 03:38 PM EDT / Sal Romano (@salromano)

PS4-GDC-Details.jpg

Sony shared new details on PlayStation 4 during a developer overview session at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
System
Sony is targeting PlayStation 4 to be the “central device in the living room,” and are building the system around core gamers, its “primary audience.”
There are five core principles to PlayStation 4: “Simple, Immediate, Social, Integrated, and Personalized.”
[Note: I have no idea what I'm writing in this next section.]
The PlayStation 4 CPU boasts a 64-bit x86 architecture, low power consumption, low heat, 8 cores, 8 hardware threads, 2MiB L2 cache per 4 core group, 32kib l1 I/D-cache, PlayStation Shader Language, and features DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0 support.
The GPU will offer tessellation to add “geometric detail to smooth edges or create more organic shapes.”
The system’s RAM is 8GB 256 bit GDDR5, a high-end graphics memory only found on PC graphics cards.
The PlayStation 4 developer environment is Windows 7 64-bit (our source wrote “Windows 7-bit,” but we take it that’s what he meant) with tools fully integrated into Visual Studio 2010 and 2012. Developers, Sony says you’ll be able to “debug your PS4 code as you would your PC code.”
Every PlayStation 4 will be equipped with a large hard-drive.
DualShock 4
As previously announced, the Start and Select buttons on the DualShock 4 have been replaced with a single “Options” button, and a new button called “Share” has been added.
According to Sony, the PlayStation 4 controller buttons are going back to digital over analog because no one used them on PlayStation 3.
The L2 and R2 buttons on the DualShock 4 have been given a curved bottom. That means no more accidental fast-forwarding while watching Netflix.
The touchpad on the controller will have a resolution of 1920×900, and will click when pushed down.
The light bar on the back of the controller can act as indicators for different players. Player one would be blue, two red, three green, and four pink, just like the PlayStation symbol colors. It could also indicate things in-game, like when your health bar is low.
Unlike the DualShock 3 and PlayStation 3, you’ll be able to charge the PlayStation 4 controller when the system is not turned on.
PlayStation 4 Eye
The PlayStation 4 Eye camera will “enhance the PS4 user experience” with high-sensitivity dual color cameras at 1280×800 resolution, 12 bits per pixel, and 60Hz.
PlayStation 4 will have a dedicated port for the camera, which is an exclusive Sony-developed connector. That means you won’t be able to plug it into your PC.
Suggested uses for the camera include walkthrough videos, killcam taunting, system login, and speech recognition. Or, the camera can see each player’s controller, and move split-screens according to each person’s location in the room.
User Interface
In 2004, there was the XMB (PSP, PS3), in 2011, the LiveArea (PS Vita), and with PlayStation 4, a new user interface based on the five principles mentioned earlier.
The interface is meant to give players a glance of information without having to load a game. You’ll be able to see what new add-ons are out, what friends are saying about said game, etc.
PlayStation Network
Every PlayStation Network user on PlayStation 4 will have two identities: their real name and picture, and their PlayStation Network ID and avatar. The player can toggle whether others see their real name. If imported through Facebook, your real name will automatically show. But that, too, can be modified.
Additionally, PlayStation 4 will have an increased friends capacity.
Social Gaming
A mock-up of how PlayStation 4 can integrate social gaming was shown. For example, with games that have choices (imagine Mass Effect or Heavy Rain), it’s possible you might see what choices your friends who’ve played the game have made. Developers will be able to set chapter markers in PlayStation 4 games for reference when using such Share options.
As far as PlayStation 4′s streaming and sharing features go, they require no additional work from developers. The hardware will handle it automatically.
Remote Play
With remote play, PlayStation 4 games can be played on a PS Vita screen. The screens are mirrored on both systems at the same time. As with streaming and sharing, this is something handled by the hardware, not the developers, and can be booted at any time with no special mode required.
PlayStation App
Through the PlayStation mobile app, PlayStation Network users will be able to login, buy PlayStation 4 games, and have their systems begin downloading at home.
Thanks, @GameOverGreggy, @Pikoeri.

Rumor: Sony planning April/May PlayStation 4 event
Sony planning "full-blown launch," according to source.
April 3, 2013 / 10:22 PM EDT / Sal Romano (@salromano)

Rumor-PS4-Event-April-May.jpg

Sony will hold a second PlayStation 4 reveal event later this month or early May, according to a PCMag.com source “familiar with the company’s marketing strategy.”
The event, according to the site, will be a “full-blown launch” of the system, and act as Sony’s final venue for PlayStation 4 discussion before the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.
PlayStation 4 was announced at a New York City press event on February 20 and is due for release this holiday. Sony has yet to pin an exact date or price on the system, or reveal its launch lineup.

So no one's gonna give the update on the PS4?

I guess I will then.

Release dates,

November 15 - US

November 29 - EU

Both are Friday. Get your sleeping bags, it's gonna be a crazy ass Friday night.

And they come with 14 day PSN+ trials. A bit short, but hey, I guess it works.

I think I may have to wait until the new year but i'll be hoping to get it sooner rather than later. I'm in no rush; I don't know what the release lineup is anyway and i've still got a huge backlog to play from the steam sale. I got Bioshock infinate installed that i've not even looked at yet. I just dont get as excited as I used to :(

I'm actually pretty pumped for the new PS4. I had all 3 of the "big 3" systems and while I've always been much more partial to the Xbox 360 since its release, I traded all of my MS shit in so I could pre order the PS4. I wasn't sure what I wanted to go for, but after Microsoft's absolute fucking joke of a reveal I gave them the finger and went Sony. I personally love the look of it and how the controller is, despite alot of people saying the opposite.
And the Order 1886? Looks fucking nasty.

Wait, you have to pay for PSN on the PS4??

Well it's not like I was getting it anyways, considering I just bought my PS3 last year :hmph: The stewpid estimates of the PS4's arrival said "No earlier than 2015". OH REALLY? REALLY? :hmph:

The only game I'd want to play on it is Versus/FF15. And it's not really worth it to pay $450 for 1 game :hmmm:

Wait, you have to pay for PSN on the PS4??

To play MP games, yes, you must subscribe to +. However, currently there are no plans to revoke any benefits of + so you're getting lots of benefits aside being able to use MP.

Yea Im not buying a ps4 anytime soon. I can wait. Now we have to pay for ps+ in order to play online. . Its iffy.

I can safely say that in terms of physical games, there's only one that I'd like at launch (Ghosts). In terms of digital games though, I hear there'll be quite a few to start with, especially if you have Plus, so that'll keep me happy until more comes out.

The fact that the PS4 will be the last console I buy for a loooong time is sehr noice too :lew:

Looking at the retail lineup itself, only Ubisoft's offerings can be considered interesting, and one of them is yet another annual Assassin's Creed game! They've lost a lot of goodwill from me as a company for shitting out Assassin's Creed 3 and dedicating to needlessly cranking out yearly sequels that just destroy the excitement about their franchises, leading only to fatigue and the death of emotional creativity. They can earn some goodwill back if they actually properly say they're going to make and release Beyond Good and Evil 2, and if Child of Light is any good.

I see nothing in the retail lineup that has me even remotely excited. A lot of them are cross-gen games, but shinier with prettier foliage thanks to the more powerful PC-in-a-smart-chic-black-box hardware. If I really wanted them, I can just pick them up for the current machines. Honestly, the Xbone's launch lineup is only slightly marginally better, but that's not saying much.

No plans to get a PS4 in the foreseeable future, really. Maybe when my personal situation becomes more settled and manageable, and when a decent library is built up. Until then, for the people who have already pre-ordered and ready for Day 1, enjoy paying a premium for being beta testers with a very scant initial library on offer. :melody:

I had to laugh at the retail line up for the PS4. I mean...LEGO Marvel Superheros...pfft  Great for LEGO and all, makes loads of business sense for them. Respect. However, from my gaming perspective, I have to question why something like this is being released on the launch date and why games that I have been waiting nearly 5+ years for is still not in sight. Some gaming companies (not looking at Square Enix in particular  ) should have had their act together and ensured that their much anticipated games (not looking at what was once called Final Fantasy XIII- Versus and is now redubbed as Final Fantasy XV because they took too long to make it, in particular) ready in time for PS4's debut into the market.

It is really charming that Sony and Lego are getting the younger gamers on board with this new console (that one mommie an' daddie! Cha Ching! $$$) but as a die hard RPG gamer I am left cold by this line up. Fossilised games like Suikoden I & II suddenly inspire such nostalgia in me and unfortunately, it seems that the PS4 and gaming companies (not looking at Square Enix in particular) are just not able to deliver the sort of gaming experience I'm looking for.

Sure they promise loads and dazzle our socks off with flashy graphics, but they are sorely missing the fundamentals here. They are lacking "it". All those who are as disappointed and disenchanted with this new development in the gaming world as I am would understand what I mean by this.

Sony shipped more than 82 Million PS4s, Aims to overtake PS3 soon

In a newly released announcement, Sony has presented the company’s financial results for Q1 of 2018. The Japanese tech giant managed to ship an impressive 82.2 Million PS4 consoles and upgraded its forecast for the financial year 2018 from 16 to 17 Million. This would inch the PS4 to the magical number of 100 Million shipped consoles. Only few consoles have managed to surpass that milestone.

Sales are expected to be significantly higher than the April forecast primarily due to higher-than-expected PlayStation®4 (“PS4”) software sales including sales through the network, the impact of foreign exchange rates, as well as an expected increase in PS4 hardware unit sales. The forecast for operating income is expected to be significantly higher than the April forecast primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned increase in sales.

The PS4 is undoubtedly a huge success for Sony. After practically giving away their title as top dog among console gaming with during the PS3 era, Sony managed to bounce back strong with their fourth home console. No longer aiming for exotic and most important, expensive hardware, the PS4 was notably built around well-known PC architecture, making the lives of game developers easier while saving precious funding for Research & Development.

ps1-1024x470.jpg

In less than 2 years, the mighty PS1 might land behind the PS4

Backed up by the immensely successful first-party developed exclusive games, the PS4 has dwarfed its most direct competitor, the Xbox One. Now, the PS4 is likely going to overtake the lifetime sales of its predecessor, the PS3, in a few months. The PS3 sold roughly 84 Million consoles. With the PS4 having sold 3.2 Million in the last three months and standing at 82.2 Million consoles at the moment, it’s a solid bet that it’s gunning for the even the mighty PS1 which sold 102 Million consoles.

Wether the PS4 will manage to dethrone the legendary PS2 which sold over 155 Million times is a more tricky question. After all, rumors about a PS5 are already swirling on the internet and there are only that more years left for the PS4 as the current-gen console. Nonetheless, the PS4 has already cemented itself as one of the most successful and dominant consoles in gaming history.

Not all is peachy with the Playstation however, as the number of monthly PS Plus subscribers has slightly went down from 34.2 to 33.9 Million. Difficult to clearly say what the reason behind this is. Could it be effects of the cross-play controversy surrounding Fortnite/Minecraft maybe?

Another PlayStation Vue Price Increase

psvue.png

Sony announced the $5 price hike across all its Vue bundles. PlayStation Vue’s cheapest plan now costs $49.99 a month, while the most expensive Ultra package now sets you back $84.99 a month. The changes starts today for new customers, but existing customers will keep their current price for at least 30 days and will see the new price beginning on their first billing cycle on or after July 31. The price increase is just the latest for PlayStation Vue, which raised its service price $10 in 2017 and another $5 last year.
