I have a problem. A serious one. I love the FF series. Alot. But now i'm torn between the two handheld consoles because the PSP is getting Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, whilst the Nintendo DS is getting Final Fantasy: 3. I cannot afford both consoles, so i have the predicament of choosing between the two. Can anyone talk me through what is the best one to go for an basically help & advise me to sway my decision.

I'll make a list of good points and bad points for the PSP and DS consoles & FF games that i know of.

PSP & Crisis Core

1) Console Expensive
2) Crisis Core battle system isn't turn based...

Nintendo DS & Final Fantasy 3

1) Cannot save in dungeons
2) Game is old, not new like Crisis Core

help me add to this :)

Thanks

PSP. PSP. PSP. PSP
PSP's have far better games than the DS. The DS looks all nice and shiny, and has the nice little features (touch-screen etc.) but in the long run, they're a big pile of poo. Nintendo aren't really that trustworthy to keep their consoles going for long periods of time, whereas Sony do. The PS2 is still going strong, even with the PS3 recently released in Europe.
As for the games, CC is just going to be amazing. It doesn't matter about the battle system, the game is going to be stunning. The older FF's on the other hand aren't really all that great (with the sole exception of VI)
That's my thoughts on it anyway...

thanks Pooley, you made some very good points there. I must admit, i'm not a big fan of the FF's before VII, but i just like the way FFIII looks on the DS. However, right now i feel like getting the PSP after your post. Quick question; Say i bought a PSP and Crisis Core, would i not be able to save my progress unless i buy a memory card?

Just like the PS1 & 2, you're going to need a memory card to save games to. The better PSP packs come with a memory card, and if you don't opt for one of those, you can still pick them up dirt cheap on the internet somewhere. Have a look about

FFXII: Revenant Wings is also going to the DS, but I don't know if you care about that

I chose the DS not only because of the price, but the DS truly has more games that appeal to me besides FF's. I don't plan on buying the Wii, so the DS gives me my Mario fix, plus I already have an mp3 player, and I dont' really go anywhere that gives me time to surf the web on a portable device anyway sooooo.......I think it just depends on your tastes and your situation :/

I'd say DS. It has all the Final Fantasys up to VI on it. I saw you dont like those ones, well if you'd play them, you'd love them. Trust me. It has better games as well, like Castlevania. I know that SotN is comming for the PSP, but thats a one-time thing, CV will continue with the DS. Residetn Evil: DS (for the DS, no shit), is a great game if you like the original RE. Personally, the only game I like of the PSP is the Legend of Heroes Series, and SOCOM: FTB2. And the screen for the PSP damages easily, and will scratch unless you completely look at it at all times, so that nothing bad happens to it. Dust collects under the PSP screen, it collects under the L and R buttons, at a spot that unreachable, and quite visable. The PSP is a massive device compared to the DS; size DOES matter. The DS is like.. Half the price, last time I checked, when compared to a PSP. So you could get the DS, and buy a plethora of games. The DS has the Opera Broswer, so the only thing the PSP has that the DS doesnt is music, and videos. But your not going to have much of those unless you invest in a nice expensive memory stick. The cheap ones wont suffice if you want lots of music and videos, or any videos at all.

DS, my friend. Nintendo DS.

thanks for all the information everyone. Now i'm still torn between the two. I'm mainly after Final Fantasy games, but some Grand Theft Auto games wouldn't be bad either..

Do an evaluation. Make a list of what games you like more then anything, see if any of their kind are out on the either the PSP or DS, and see if any future titles interest you on either console. Then you can make a final decision. But seriously, I would go for a DS. Better value for money, what with the ports of the early FF titles, FF3, FFXII:RW, a CC game coming out, FFTA2 coming out/already come out, it's well worth the money, plus, it's cheaper then a PSP, and graphically, it can kick arse, depending on what game you get. (Also, got a DS if you love Pokemon lol) I wouldn't dream of getting a PSP really. Only title that would interest me would be FFTactics. You would only buy a PSP for CC if you were some sort of Compilation enthusiast, which I am not ;P

That's the exact reason i'm torn. (I dislike FF : Tactics Advance so that doesn't bother me much), but i want to play Pokemon Pearl and Final Fantasy 3 on the DS but i want to play Final Fantasy 1 (which is coming out for PSP) and also Crisis Core.

So it's a toss up between Final Fantasy Crisis Core and Pokemon Pearl. I am tempted by both, i love RPG's , from childish, to serious, so that's why i'm having a hard time deciding.

I will look at future releases and see where that gets me, thanks for the reply.

I'm definantly all for the PSP. For one, Crisis Core of course, but I'm a diehard FFVII fan. For two, I was just reading in my Game Informer last night that Square is remaking Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP (the old PS 1 classic game) plus they are adding a story with Balthier from FFXII in it and gonna have him as a playable character like they did with Cloud, etc...Not to mention I prefer the PSP graphics over the DS and you can also buy movies to watch on the PSP, you can download pictures onto your PSP and have any type of wallpaper you want when you turn it on. You can also download music onto it. I'd say PSP all the way. *huggles her PSP* lol

The PSP is like a mini computer, which bugs me. In the end, I just wanna play games XD.

FFI is already out for DS btw ;P

For GBA anyway, it comes along with FFII.

I'm hoping to get Diamond <3

Now I look at your next response..I'd say DEFINITELY get a DS. There's more titles you can play atm, all of which are out soon/some already out.

I wouldn't get a PSP for one game, unless you want to buy it for movies etc. I'd wait for the price to go down, before thinking on whether or not to get one for CC.

Truer words could not be spoken on the subject. The DS has too many cheesy, tacky little games I think. About 90% of the PSP games are meant to last and be replayable. The DS seems like a gadget to me, that will just be forgotten about rather than last

Well, if your 'computer-smart' or you know what your doing, you can put a GBA Emulator on the PSP, and then put the ROMs on the PSP so that you can play FFI-VI on it. And then like Dark Fantasy said, you can put ISOs on the PSP and play VII to VIII. But remember, if you don't know how to do this, you just spent $300 on a piece of shit that has nothing to offer.

And to downgrade the PSP (which you need to do before you can get the Emulators and ROMs), you need GTA: LCS anyway... So sadly, I guess your best bet is the PSP . Sorry to bear the bad news.

Then why has it been more successful in terms of sales rather then the PSP?

It depends on where you're from. Isn't the PSP far more succesful in the UK? At least up where I am it is. The DS is far more succesful in Japan, because the sort of games you can buy for it are more appealing to the Japanese market

I'd say the DS, it has alot of better games and you can get FF1-6 aswell via their GBA ports.
Outside of FF, Valkyrie profile and popolocrois, the PSP has next to 0 ecent games, whilst the DS seems to have alot of fun games.

Downgrading the firmwire isn't something i like doing with electronics, it can cause many problems.

It seems to me that handheld gaming is very competetive right now. What with Final Fantasy games coming out on the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP.

Basically, a quick overview of each console from my point of view:

DS - Obviously aimed at younger guys/girls, and has alot of more 'childish, kiddy games', but is making way for some top sellers such as the Final Fantasy series and Pokemon Pearl is coming out, which will sell alot, what with the Wi-Fi feature on it.

PSP - Aimed at a more adult audience. Has some top sellers like GTA and is making way for some Final Fantasy games to attract the RPG fans.

So right now, no matter what other games are out, childish or not, The real deal is that Final Fantasy is coming out on both consoles, and bear in mind i'm only buying a console for Final Fantasy.

The reason i'm not sure of getting a DS is that Final Fantasy 3 is coming out.........and that's great n all, but it's been out. It's not a new. They're just making money off past games.

The PSP is getting Crisis Core, which is an all new game, BUT , it's a spin off of Final Fantasy 7, and as far as i know, you play Zack?

I'm still confused, i really am torn between the two. Sorry about this guys , but i want to make sure i make the right decision!!!
