Riku - Gay or Straight?

It can be an influence from what the young kids wear in Japan, or their street fashion

I did read somewhere online about that, that many clothes featured in RPGs are based on what people wear in Japan. And since we arent from there then its different from what we wear in America. Riku's clothes may look different, maybe not gay, but different, but that may be what some people in Japan wear. So Riku is not gay at all even if he does have different clothes on than what we wear over here.

It's a video game.

You ever see how many belts Lulu has? I can't even count..

It's not real life, and they probably try to make the characters look as unique as possible.

True Japanese street fashion looks a bit more extreme. I think Nomura took those ideas and toned it down to a point where it'll be "okay" as the norm for the USA.

It is typical for men, especially in Visual Kei bands to shape their eyebrows like a woman, do their make up like a women, or even show off their midriffs more fully than Riku's little peephole in comparison AND some of them even show off their thighs.

The girls like Kairi and Namine look pretty normal to me, because in Japanese street fashion for girls, you usually see that Visual Kei thing goes for girls as well as boys, but for girls, there is also that lolita look... Which I'm not too fond of myself.

Personally I highly believe Riku is bisexual! He is either gay nor straight, he is both. ^^

Riku isn't gay, but those who draw pictures of Sora and Riku making out on the beach are. I've even heard of fanfics where people write out stories of Sora and Riku having some creepy sexual romance. Using a paopu (sp) fruit's juice for lubrication. Distasteful.

I don't believe the creators intended for Riku to be gay.

Authorial intent shouldn't necessarily influence your interpretation. It's true that considering current mainstream perception of homosexuality, a homosexual Riku would obviously never be canon. However, reader (or in this case, player) response is equally as important. And aside from whatever alleged ideology Square and Disney try to push upon me, I for one would totally believe it if Riku were gay.

What does Riku do/say that would lead someone to believe that he's homosexual? His clothing? If we go off clothing, then every character in KH/FF should be branded gay. Riku certainly doesn't stand out in that area.

Actually...

I just realized how ridiculous this thread is. I'm analyzing a videogame character's sexual preference. I'm done.

I dont think Riku is gay, but the clothes he wears kinda make him seem that way.

What??? Im sorry but that is ridic. As its been ssaid, everyone in FF or KH should be branded gay then. There is nothing homosexual about Riku or his clothing.

Dya know what? The amount of ppl that have this GAY theory in their minds, I am gay and let me tell you Riku is far from it!
If riku looks gay! Then what does Tidus look like from FFX?????
That is a question that shuld be answered

Trying to tell whether he looks gay or not based on his clothes is useless since everybody in KH is designed the same damn way.

Anyway, his sexuality can be examined only through his actions. Now, just because I think it's possible to see Riku as gay doesn't mean I think every single interaction Sora has with him is homosexually charged. But his actions can definitely be interpreted in more than one way. There are certain layers to their relationship which can resonate as either friendship or romantic love, depending on the player. Sora's relationship with Kairi is quite the same; while he definitely crushes on her, he interacts with her as a friend as well as a romantic interest, though the two tones work on different levels and can fluctuate.

And SapphireStar? I totally agree that this conversation is ridiculous. But oh, fanwank is so much more preferable to writing midterm papers.

they would alow it

wtf u ppl on bout of course they would alow him to be gay becuase walter ellise disnay was racist him self + does it mata if he is gay or not 4 fuck sake! im not gay my self btw ( i wouldntcare if i was though)

I think he had a hint of gayness in the first one.
I haven't played KHII so I can't compare.

Chill. It's only a question. :wacky:

Personally I don't think he is gay, mainly because he didn't exactly act like a gay to be quite honest. At no point during KH did I suspect that Riku acted gay in any emotional or physical way.

My two cents. :monster:

Obviously none of these characters are ACTUALLY gay. It shares Disney's name, yes?
Sure, Square has a thing for having male characters obsess over each other, have or develop strong bonds with each other, but I've yet to see genuine romance.

Yes, there can be overly affectionate gestures towards each other (i.e. in KH2 with Sora falling to his knees and grabbing Riku's hand after finally reuniting with him) but I classify it is fanservice before calling it romantic love. Clearly the deep love between friends though.

But it's just SO easy to twist it in a romantic way, which I love to do :wacky:

To be honest, he never really came across as gay to me. If anything other then straight, I guess I'd place him as bi, but certainly not fully gay. He didn't do anything that made me think "Oh gosh what are he and Sora doing in that tree house? DDD:" or anything. Sure, his outfit was a bit... questionable, I suppose. But I don't think that really places him as gay or anything. In II he was a bit more, I'm not sure, friendly towards males, but again, not to the point of being gay.

So yeah, maaaybe bi in II, but not gay, at least in my opinion.

nope.. i dont think rikus gay... i think sora is though.... especially when he got on both knees for riku...
