The Australian Open has just about finished it's first week and I realized that there isn't a tennis thread on this forum! Shocking!

So, has anyone been up late keeping tack of the Australian Open? :)

I tend to keep an eye on the Grand Slam events, I'm a big Federer fan. But he was rusty in his last game.

Was nice to see Dokic win today and make it to the quarter-finals after a few years in the wilderness.

I normally only watch the highlights of the opening week's play as there often aren't any good matches. Though watching Hewitt getting completely outplayed was fun. The quater finals and the semis are when it starts to get interesting imo.

So far it looks like all 8 seeds will advance to the quarter finals assuming that both Nadal and Murray come out on top as they are the only 2 in the top 8 to not concede a set although I think James Blake and Gael Monfils could provide a slight upset.

That was a good match, albeit Roger Federer wasn't great until the end but Tomas Berdych stood up to the challenge and was very impressive. Took control of the first 2 sets but in the end Federer's quality got him through.

I keep up to date with the tennis on a regular occasion with Federer and Murray being two of my faves. As much as I admit that he will be the dominant force in the sport for the next few years easily I'm not such a big fan of Nadal, some of the ways he acts on the court just piss me off to no end.

Awesome player though.

That Nadal v Federer final was another mighty battle between the two, poor old Federer must be left wondering what he has to do to beat Nadal. He was in tears at the end and you could understand why. Terrific though to see these two players at the top of their game having one duel after another.

Big tennis fan here. My favourite is Federer and watching him become a mental midget in front of Nadal is really saddening. On Wta side I rlly like Sharapova, rlly miss her on court.

I can't say I'm a tennis fan but admittedly I enjoy watching Nadal and Federer mainly because they're the Man Utd/Barca of Tennis, you know that you're going to get exciting and aggressive tennis whereas there seems to be a lot of players (in my eyes) that seem happy enough just rallying whereas both of those show a winning mentality straight from the off. :)

i used to follow it a lot but not as much any more since my favorite male player andy rodderick keeps on losing to federer and my favorite female player justine henin retired.

Murray playing nadal in the semis of the Monte Carlo Masters, sicne its a clay even yuo'd expect Nadal to win but seeing as Murray is the most in-form player of the season so far I'd love to see him keep it close if not win it.

Federer seems to have lost it, he's still playign fine but he's admited himself that his serve is holding him back. He's arguebly the best when he's on top form but Murray and Nadal just have the better of him atm. Shame since I really want him to top the Sampra's record.

Nadal got knocked out of the French Open today, huge shock there. And it leaves the draw wide open in the men's competition. Federer might not get a better chance to win this tournament but his recent form doesn't inspire huge confidence.

Yeah with Nadal out then it's kinda open to anyone now. No offence to Soderling but he was fortunate to come up against a strangely flat Nadal and there are still a couple of players I'd put over him to win the thing. As you've said Federer will never have a better chance than this, win it and he'll both equal Sampras' record and win the last Grand Slam still needed by him.

Murray did well again yesterday against Cilic winning again in straight sets, luckily he didn't have to rely on coming back from 5-2 in a set like he has a habit of doing. :P Hope he manages to make it to the semis at least, a good showing here on clay would be an awesome boost ahead of the grass court tournaments.

Yeah he made it hard from himself today, I actually thought Haas was going to do it today as well but after that 3rd Set he just fell apart. Federer didn't really play badly either, Haas was just too good at the start.

Hopefully Murray will avoid a similar type of match tomorrow.

Murray goes out to a pretty impressive Gonzalez. In the end Murray can be pleased with getting so far on his least favourite surface, and he'll have better Grand Slam chances at Wimbledon and the US Open. Federer v Monfils should be good tomorrow (if that is when they're playing)

Gonzalez was hitting some crazy shots today, clay is meant to be the slowest surface but that didn't show today. Murray had a good run this year although with all those big names already out he had a good chance to win the thing.

Federer as the last remaining member of the top 4 better win it now, I would think most neutrals want him to do it finally as well.

Two cracking semi-finals today, and Federer had to dig deep, as did Soderling who looked out of it at one point in the final set. Federer just one game away from completing a clean sweep of the Grand Slam titles and tying Pete Sampras' record, but perhaps Soderling has one last surprise left in him. I can see Federer winning in four though.

Been a couple of days now but, woo Federer!

Finally the man won the French Open to equal the record 14 Grand Slams as well as to win the only one that he hadn't won before. Interesting that everyone is now claiming that Federer is now the best ever, thought that was the case before this match too but whatever.

He's looking on good form the now and with Nadal on a bit of slump at the moment there's a very good chance that he could win Wimbledon. He's usually excels at the US too so you would bet on him to get to 15 this season at some point.

Great to see Federer finally complete the set of Grand Slams, he's certainly one of the greatest ever anyway. He might well overtake Sampras' tally of 14 Grand Slam titles this year, I hope he does so.

Wimbledon started yesterday. It's a real shame that Rafa won't be defending the title, he's had to pull out with injury. That pretty much means Federer is favourite to win. Despite a slow start, he dispatched his opponent quickly yesterday (I forget the guys name).
