what is penance?

what is he/she/it?

i know it's (supposed) to be the toughest boss and all, but what i'm wondering is, what exactly is it storywise? a machina? a fiend? and what's its reason to appear? and what is it planning to do?
 
I've never been able to defeat all the Dark Aeons so never seen him. I don't know what he looks like or where you encounter him >_<

My guessing he's a differnet coloured version of the Weapon's in Omega Ruins. but probs not.
 
no it looks like a giant flying machina but an orangey yellow color with arms
it probably the master of dark aeons or something
 
It has no purpose story-wise. It's just an additional boss, like Ozma from FFIX. It's probably just some sort of Master Aeon or something. I haven't actually fought it myself, so I don't know

same here, i never thought about it until they made this thread, and i don't really know what it is, probably a judge or something
 
Just something which occurred to me; a High Summoner fought Sin in the Calm Lands, and fell down into the Gorge with Sin (presumably still fighting it). And for those who don't know, Penance came from the Gorge. It's a long shot, but it might just be a Final Aeon or something. Not exactly likely, but just something that I thought to be interesting to contemplate.

But yeah, it's just an optional boss. It looks greatly like one of Yevon's machina though, so it might also be a weapon like Vegnagun of sorts constructed during the Machina War. I would've preferred Penance to be the one terrorizing Spira, rather than Vegnagun to be honest. >.>

As for it being a "master" of the Dark Aeons, that's ridiculous. It's evident that every Dark Aeon is summoned by a Priest of Yevon. All except Anima and Bahamut. Don't quite know where they were going with those two...
 
hmmm not bad theory
when i fight it they are on the airship deck and they just ready thier weapons as penance comes (they dont say anything)
When i beat it, it was as if nothing happened to the characters
 
beat all the dark aeons in the pal version of ffx then he will appear above the gauge in calm lands
you then select him in the airship menu
 
Penance is only available in the International release (I think) It's just an optional side-boss that you get the opportunity to fight once you've defeated all Dark Aeons

Pal version? Do you mean the international version? I'm in the US and I got the game a while after KH and X-2 came out. I just got the PS2 greatest hits one whatever that is.
 
Yes. PAL is what's used in Europe and I think in Australia too. The Dark Aeons and Penance aren't available in the US release, so you don't have anything to worry about
 
I knew I was confused for a reason. I always thought that the omega ruins were the toughest place. I couldn't even get through there because the stupid Malboros always go first and use bad breath and my party killed themselves. I gave up after that.

hmm if you found omega ruins hard then the dark aeons and penance are like 100 times harder
 
An imported game would mean that they'd need an import of a PAL PS2 as well though, and altogether that isn't going to come very cheap. Beating Penance isn't anything special though. Apparently the items you gain for the battle aren't great ones - and neither are the ones you receive for beating the Dark Aeons. The US version does have Nemesis though, who isn't part of the PAL version is it?
If you still really want to see Penance though, there'll be videos on YouTube; just check on there
 
Yeah I was about to check there. I know I'll never be able to import it, at least not now. I have no cash and I still live at home. Haven't hit 18 yet. If I was going to import though I would go for a japanese import because I'm going to learn the language soon and I like the idea of getting the games first.
 
pal has everything which us have including nemesis although nemesis is alot easier than penance

you can get swap magic which plays any import game at $15
You get all break hp limit items from dark aeons and you can get loads of em against dark yojimbo cause you can fight him infinite times ^_^

Penance drops master sphere and rare armour and weps
 
The vid on youtube of penance is 48min long! I looked at the first few minutes and the guys are doing 100k damage every hit. The guy must have billions of hp.
