Well if you are in this forum, you are either an FF fan or that you are just some hater/stalker who has nothing to do. We are made up of large percentage of the former.

Which group of fan do you belong to?

Are you a classical fan? (FFI to FFVI)
Are you the PSX fan? (FFVII to FFIX)
Are you the new millennium fan? (FFX, FFXII, FFXIII)
Are you the online fan? (FFXI and FFXIV)
Are you the spin-off fan? (Dissidia, Kingdom hearts, tactics, chocobo world, etc)
Are you the movie/manga/anime fan? (before crisis, advent children, spirits within, etc)

You can choose more than one option.

The descriptions (new millenium, etc, are just to make things sound easier. they are not official cliches whatsover. Tell me if you don't like my grouping, or if I miss any)

I ended up choosing everything. I love every entry in the FF series that I have played/seen. However, because I have not played any online FF games I did not choose that.
Now I really really want to play FFXI, but I am going to wait for FFXIV probably.

I really don't know actually. There are great, outstanding titles in each group (bar the online and non-video game groups) and therefore it's difficult to really put myself in a group. The classics are certainly great games, embodying the core features of the Final Fantasy franchise. But the only two games I love out of the classics are FFIV and FFVI.

The PSX ones are all great in their own ways. I love FFIX. FFVIII has certainly given me a lot of enjoyment and I am in the process of playing through it in the third disc. I also rather liked FFVII - it's certainly not my favourite - but the cult surrounding that game does irritate me frequently.

The millennium ones have been particularly lacking in many fronts. FFX, FFXII and FFXIII just haven't given to me as much enjoyment as their predecessors have managed. I do think that the games are descending into gradual decline at this stage.

Online games - I haven't played any of them. The spinoffs, well, none of them were really that outstanding at all. Kingdom Hearts in my opinion, shouldn't really be included because it's its own franchise separate from Final Fantasy.

I'll go for the PSX ones. I think as a whole, it's the group that delivers the most in terms of storyline, visuals and gameplay. Sorry for the tl;dr post.

From 4 to X I'd say

The the PSX era are the ones I replay the msot, I'd include X in that as well, but although Ive spent many an hour on the game, its pretty much been just one file, Ive beat it 3 times I think, one of them being my main file, and a newer main file I started again recently...ish, I just spend that much time ont he one file trying to 100% it, that I rartely replay it

VII and VIII have had the most abuse of the lot, so Im more a PSX era fan I suppose

I consider the FF golden age to be from FFIV-FFIX, with FFX narrowly missing out only because of the linear gameplay and lack of flyable airship.

I guess that leaves me as both a classical and a PSX fan. I do like the other games too (or at least I find something in them to like, even if I dislike the overall style) but a lot seems to be missing from them in my eyes when compared to those from the classical and PSX era.

As for the spin-offs, some of them are fun but others I haven't found fun at all, and some have tried to really mess with the canon. Like Olivia, I don't consider Kingdom Hearts to be a part of Final Fantasy. KH is much more geared towards Disney than Final Fantasy, and while the Disney characters are in character and related to the plot of their respective worlds, the FF characters are just cameos, alternate universe counterparts of themselves, often not even resembling their original appearances in FF games. If I was to include Kingdom Hearts as an FF game then I'd say that I did enjoy those games, and I also enjoy Dissidia (though there are major flaws with the limits of the moves in that game). So I'm not a spin-off fan in general.

EDIT - Despite many people I did like FFXIII, but I do miss the old style of games from the beginning up to FFIX. Those worked the best for me.

I voted for all but Online.

IMO no online FF game should have ever been counted within the main series. That, and I'm not paying whatever it is a month to play a game. They should be FF Online and FF Online II. XII should be XI and XIII should be XII.

Aside from that, I love the classic games. That's the era that I got into FF.

I love the PSX games since they aren't too far off from the classic games game-play wise, and they have much longer stories.

I love the new millennium because each of the three games has had some major differences from the rest of the games, making each one more unique. X had the turn based system, which was pretty fun, AND you could swap your party members in and out to deal with different situations. XII was fun because it played more like an MMO with the monsters roaming around visibly rather than random battles. And then we have XIII. Unlike most of this forum apparently, I loved XIII. The fact that you gave characters roles in battle made it quite fun for me. Lightning could go from Ravager, to Medic, then to Commando, thus changing the outlook of battles tremendously.

As far as spinoff games go...I like Dissidia and Tactics. Assuming you are going to count the sequels and prequels in the spinoff section, then X-2, while being overly cheesy, wasn't TOO bad, IMO. XII: Revanent Wings is pretty fun too. However, my favorite of the Sequel/Prequel games is probably Crisis Core. Dirge of Cerebrus wasn't bad, but it doesn't hold my attention long enough. I have no interest in KH though.

From the movie/manga/anime category, I've seen Advent Children and Spirits Within. Spirits Within wasn't anything special, I'd have to watch it again to make a better judgement. Advent Children was awesome however. I have just starting reading through Final Fantasy XIII Episode Zero.

What?

Was that as painful to right as it looked?

Well as long as you had fun I guess lol...........

THis just re-affirmed what I already knew: I'm a fan of FF.simple as that, nice and easy.

Its been so long since I played any FF game........well over a year......its just not on my radar to replay them off late, I know the stories so well, they have started to blur with my own life, to the point where I have purchased FF weapons.

I got a Yuffie key ring, waited for it in the mail........2 weeks role buy........no Key ring but I did get a nice letter from the Australia Federal Police, saying:

"We have halted the importation of Item No#Whatever and have sent you this letter of statement informing you it will be confiscated, if you wish to challenge the finding you are welcome to approach Import control. But if your appeal is denied you may face a $500 fine".

So I left well enough alone.

I voted PSX. I have replayed VII, VIII and IX so many times and I still love them.
I've never played any of the games before the PS1 (I am ashamed to say that).
I enjoyed playing X and XII, but I absolutely despise X-2. And I never thought that the PS2 games were never as good as the PSX games before them.

I never played the online FF either. It's just something that never appealed to me, and there was no way I was ever going to pay to play it every month.

The anime... well, yeah, I like it I suppose. But I'm not overly-fond of it. I've seen advent children and Last Order a couple of times each and that's about enough for me, they're not things I watch over and over.

I'm a spin-off fan as well :hmmm: I enjoy Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus (although I will admit, it doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy. I only like it because I like first-person shooters)

I only voted for PSX though, because I didn't realise you could select more than one thing before it was too late :dave:

I don't despise FFX-2.
I feel somewhat mystified why some people feel that way.
Of course I am also mystified as to why some people like FFXII.
That makes no sense to me either.
rotfl.

I feel both FFX and X-2 belong in the PSX era...I am partial to both the classical and PSX eras.
Those were the golden eras of Final Fantasy.Sad the series has fallen so far.

I voted "classic" and "PSX".

However, for the PSX option, I hate FFVII and FFVIII. They're fucking shit. :mokken:

However, FFI-VI and FFIX are fanfuckingtastic. FFX is uber shit, FFXI doesn't count, FFXII is meh, and FFXIII is the shit that my shit ate and shit back out. It's fucking SUPER UBER SHIT.

I'm more of a PSX, new millenium, and spin-off fan. Most of the PSX FF games, I watched my cousins play. I was too young to really understand much about a video game with a storyline, and so when I was older and FFX came out, I decided to play it. That was the first FF game I've officially played. As for spin-offs, Kingdom Hearts won my heart with its characters both original and Disney (not that I didn't love them before).

I'm probably a PSX and New Millennium fan, although I do like the classics I've played... so I could put that too.

My favorite FF games are VIII, IX, and X, followed by XII, so that's PSX/New Millennium. :8F:

It's not that I don't like the rest of the games, I just... don't like them as much. I haven't played XIII yet, but I do think I'll enjoy it. It looks fun. Oh, I liked X-2 as well. Nothing wrong with it. :ryan:

Ah crap, I like the spinoffs too. :lew: Kingdom Hearts, Dissidia, Crystal Chronicles <3

Oh, one last thing. Before Crisis isn't a movie/anime/manga. :wacky: It's a cell phone game.

To be honest, I don't like to align myself to a specific sub fandom. All this bitterness and anger between different gaming eras/platforms, producers, composers, art and so on is just way beyond my comprehension. I just enjoy what I enjoy and dislike what I dislike.

That said, I guess I'm everything except the online fan. I won't poo-poo on online if that's your thing, but it's not really for me. As for the rest...

I actually haven't really played much of 1-3, but I loved 4, 5, and 6...

And 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 13 so far xD

For spin-offs, my first FF game ever was in fact FFT for the PS1, and I loved that game so much ♥

I really enjoyed Crisis Core and Zack, and as much as I hated FFX-2 characters (except Paine; she's awesome :3) and crummy story, I'm hard pressed to deny it was an enjoyable game to play.

DoC was fun too. I think I understand that strong dislike people have for it, but I still had fun with it, and I'm not even a FPS fan (although I think DoC was kind of a action-FPS mixture).

And Dissidia was loads of fun! The nostalgia, the action-RPG-fighting battle system, the music...

I absolutely love Kingdom Hearts. In fact, I love the KH series more than the FF series. Which is why I don't really like thinking of KH as a FF spin-off. There are FF cameos, yeah, but that's really it. Its still it's own thing *shrugs*

As for non-gaming, I liked Last Order, On the Way to a Smile, and Advent Children/Complete. To be honest, for OTWTAS, I was ready to hate it because it was about Denzel, who only first appears in AC/C, but I was surprised that it was done pretty well. Not something anyone would need to see, but it was somewhat of a touchy story about a boy, his loss, and his change.

I kind of want to see FF:Unlimited, but I honestly don't care about it. Same for Spirits Within. Although I wonder about all the hate it has. All I gathered was that there was nothing really FF about it *shrugs*

Also, just the sake of saying it, I'm the quirky fan that gathers fan art, doujinshi, reads fanfiction, and pair up whoever I want :monster:

I'm more of a New Millenium fan. I looooooove the graphics, weapons, etc.... of the newer games. I think Versus is really going to knock my socks off. I thought the original FFXIII was going to do that too...and it did with the graphics, but I didn't really care for the story and linearity of it. I think the plots were better with the earlier and original Final Fantasy installments. So theres pluses and minuses imo for both. Graphics and cutscenes do not always outweigh a good story though.

I had to vote for classic :x3: IV and VI were the games that really got me into the series, and tbh even though I've really liked a lot of the games after that, I don't know whether I would've gotten as hooked on FF if I had played any of the later ones first :hmmm: Not only because I've noticed that a lot of people's favorite FFs tend to be the first ones they've played, and there's some sort of inherent imprinting magic involved especially if you're a young kid when you first play it ^_^; but also because I still love the stories the best after having played all the other ones. Despite IV and VI having SNES graphics and sound, I actually enjoy their presentation quite a lot; the 2d graphics are somewhat endearing rather than annoying IMO, and the soundtracks are the best in the series as well; even when real-life orchestras try to perform their own versions of the songs, in my book they aren't delivered quite as well as the dinosaur-synth OSVs XD Plus they stick really well to the idea of linearity (pardon my language :gasp:), which I love in a story-based game; after X there seems to be a trend towards more player involvement, and I don't like inserting myself into a game; I play them mainly for escapism and prefer not to have to make tons of choices in the storyline that give it my own "flavor" or whatnot, if I'm the thing I'm trying to escape from :lew:

oops my bad. I mixed up Last order and before crisis >_>

Back to topic, I also feel that the PSX era was the golden age for Final Fantasy.

PSX and new millenium, but I am starting to get involved with the classics as well.
Also some spin-offs.
As for online,I am not interested at the moment...at all.

I can say that I enjoyed all the games thus-far aside from XI, Tactics PSX, and Chocobo Dungeon. I started with VI (or III since it was the SNES version), but quickly moved onto VII, VIII, IX, X, I, II, III, IV, and V. I have beat all of the main series except for II since the first few times I attempted it, I ran into a dragon as my second battle right outside of the main town. I can say that I was very irritated by that. Now, in general, I am a classic gamer, but final fantasy can't be only one genre that was good. My favorite will always be VI because it got me into the series, but next to that, VII, X, V, and I are also great fun. I liked X-2, aside from all the Charlie's Angels references that were made.

Outside of the main series, I loved tactics on DS, Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts series, DoC, and all the others except Chocobo's Dungeon. I am a very dedicated gamer, so any game I play cannot just be beaten, it must be conquered, demolished, if you will. I have done everything in all the games I have beat that can be done, except for Kingdom Hearts 2. I don't know why, but I cannot beat Sephiroth. Otherwise, I love all final fantasy games.

With the movies, I can't deny that I was appalled at the fact that so many FF fans disliked Spirits Within. I thought it was a beautifully rendered world with amazing story and characters. The music gave a very somber mood and that is one of the movies that made me cry (sadly, not even close to being the only one). I loved Advent Children as well. The music in that was so amazing that I thought I might never free myself from my guitar and piano in attempts to learn the music (I did learn most of it except for a couple songs). The action was great, story better, and I loved seeing familiar faces from the series in a feature-length film. I hope for more movies FF related in the future.
