Why do people want manly men in final fantasy?

It's a fantasy RPG we're talking about here.So...weird clothing and character design are kinda obligatory,XD.
Although I don't like the take the OP has on the ugly guys.We actually need some ugly girls,or all girls in FF universe are beautiful?
Anyway, there are more important things than the surface and I think FF has more to offer than just beautiful faces(either male or female) like very awesome looking FMVs and effects or environment.Personally I don't complain much. It's not as if I like every good-looking guy in the FF series or discard every bad looking one.It all comes down to personality. Most of us love Vivi cause he's adorable not cause he looks pretty or beautiful.

I dont think thats the issue. It was a lil over the top

It's a matter of Balance. I wonder what is the OP's view on Tom Cruise, Brad Pete, etc.? They have facial hairs and kinda mascular but they are far from "Disgusting" look. Honestly, I'm an asian but I'm annoyed by the fact that some "Bishies" tried to look like an anime character. I just laugh when I saw something like that who is not in some cosplay and some conventions.

I noticed this only really became the case after FFVIII. I remember once mistaking Irvine for a lady when I first saw the trailer for VIII. But then in IX, you had Zidane who dressed kinda feminely, even though he doesn't really look like a woman, and there's Kuja who really did look like a woman. Then in FFX you had Seymour who fit more into the "gay" stereotype.

Now, I haven't read through the whole thread properly, because there's like, seven pages of this, so forgive me if I'm repeating anyone. But I think the whole "femininity" of FF characters comes from their tendancies to have some very vain villains. Vanity is definitely a recurring element with their villains. Sephiroth with his luxorious hair, Ultimecia with her flowing gowns and heavy make-up, Kuja basically being Sephiroth's twin sister, Seymour's personality... Vayne in XII was kinda feminine, but not as much. You could even go as far back as the Nintendo era. Kefka was very theatrical in his appearance; Palmecia also looked very feminine, and Cloud of Darkness could be considered as an early design for Ultimecia (They both look very similar.)

But the point here is that all these characters seem rather obsessed with their looks. (Makes you wonder what they could have accomplished had they put all that effort into taking over or destroying the world or whatever.)

I personally don't think it's very manly to be that conscious of your own looks. You get guys nowadays who work out loads, build up aload of muscle, but then go and get a spray tan, or their eyebrows waxed, or have a manicure or something. Having said that, it baffles me why ladies go through so much time and effort to "look good", particularly if they are very attractive anyway.

With FF games, I just like to see some more natural looking characters. I mean, come on, you got people out to save the world, people out to destroy the world, yet they make sure they got time to style their hair, apply make-up or whatever. It's just not practical.
