Just playing devils advocate here, but I believe what the gentleman means is that when you're 40, you probably shouldn't be on a forum where most of the members fall within the "10-19" age group. For a variety of reasons, just some of which I'm going to mention:

  1. It's a surefire way to get in trouble with the law
  2. Most of the members won't see things your way, or share your point of view, save for a few key topics.
  3. You'll be the older, "creepy" guy that hangs around the kids.
And so on and so forth. Think about it this way, as a forty year old would you hang out often with 10 to 19 years olds in real life? If you answered "yes" and you're not aiming to be a teacher, then you need help...

Actually since I was about 17 I've had friends who were 30, 35, 40... If you have common interests and can hold your own in a conversation it's not really that weird. I make friends in my dojo, (they have to listen to me because I'm a senior student anyway :D) and I make friends at work who are older than me all the time. Granted a lot of them are kids at heart, but I don't want to stuffy when I'm that old either.

Maybe I'm just a special case, I don't know.

Nope, in all of the examples you've cited, there's only one "youngster" yourself hanging out with a bunch of older peeps. As such, you're the odd one out. They're not being weird, they're just being normal, and you're the alien element to their dynamic. As such, that doesn't apply to my proposed argument.

Not true, I'll bring one of them around my younger friends all the time, or hang out at their house.

Still not the same. As you say now, it's just one older person with two younger peeps. And in your second example, again, it's just you in their house. There is only one younger child in the company of more adults.

OK I guess I sort of see what you mean, but I still don't think it'd be weird to have an older person joining a forum, as long as they didn't pretend to be 17 in order to hit on underage kids or something like that.
